I guess you will looking for the criminal rights until something happen direct to your family. And if you see then how your family member suffering for the rest of the life, and the criminal get free after short time and still in full health, you will start thinking a different way. Perhaps then you will look for support of the victims. Do this criminals respect other peoples life? Think about it. So why to treat them with gloves?
Its a shame to read those comments. These are the same thoughts that prevailed in 19th century St Lucia where the majority of people were illiterate and had no concept of their rights as citizens. And it waas worse in slavery days! In 2013, you mean a reader cant analyze that a system suppose to be followed to prevent abuse. If you ask old folks who grew up in the 30's and 40's they would tell you the abusive nature of teachers. Teachers were untrained and abused kids whose parents were poor..the same thing went for poor youth; they were abused by the police based on prevailing stereotypes that existed in the day. Many folks were imprisoned innocently and without any evidence. Fast forward today where we have systems in place and people who volunteer their services to see that there is no abuse and they are then ridiculed. I assume the perception of crime in St Lucia is based only on news reports and the rantings from talk shows rather than experience. One question that is never asked: would you like to see people who dont like you for whatever reason, make up a story that you are a thief or you murdered someone and then the police hear that story and without asking questions gun you down in cold blood? all based on hearsay! or do you prefer a system when allegations are made, they are investigated and evidence presented and judgement handed out? I was in Kenya recently and was told by the common folk in the neigbourhood that all somebody have to say in the street is shout out "thief or bandit" and passersby would come and kill you even before the police arrive who would kill you the same way? is that the culture you all anonymous commenters want in St Lucia or do you prefer a system where the rights of the individual is respected and due process is given to that individual!
The drug war which reached our shores was because of the greed and the lust for power by some in the police force. We know that the locus of power in the narcotics industry move to cabinet government in Saint Lucia, but the police links were retained. So the acts of bad cops are clouding our judgement on the local human rights issue. It has quite a different character in the US.
We should not allow ourselves to be so confused. The perps may be lying low for now. However, the social cancer is deep-seated. This superficial approach by a few attention-seeking zealots are a long way misdirected. They cannot see the forest for the trees.
The action by the US is a warning sign that much more can follow, if the country continues moving into the orbit of those countries banding in opposition to the US.
@ blooger 9.45pm I guess you miss the point. At present hundreds of court cases are still pending or repeatetly adjurned.Thats a shame and a incompetence of our court system, and having a prime misnister with a lawyer background even more. What has been achived in the reform? Nothing visible! If Mrs Mary fighting this repeatedly and bringing statistics on open cases from month to month( to show the numbers),she will have all the symphaty of the puplic. At moment Mrs Mary seems to live in a dreamworld fighting cases instead fighting this outdated law system.

I am really disappointed in that lady's disappointment. Is it an issue of a mid-life crisis? One wonders.
