More like sad stuff, this is unbelievable. There are so many men out there that would have taken advantage of this young child. It was probably an act of god that the number she text was yours. Hopefully she'll think twice about doing such a thing again.
Candy, I'd hope so, but I didn't get the feeling that was the case.
You know on my blog one comment was made about the 'need' for cellphones for contact for safety - I know in St. Lucia these days people are mugged for their cellphones, so if parents do want to have the safety of contact with their kids, at least give them a real basic phone, so it makes the possibility of danger minimized.
And I do wonder what we'd do if we just didn't have this option of cellphones; we'd survive.
I believe you are right in questioning the balance of safety when it comes to the youth... but is it really her fault? I don't want to come off as one of these other "blame it on society" bums out there but you have to admit that this is a fast paced world we're living in. And although I'm not particularly presumptuous, I think that she is just another one of those lonely teens who just wants to have friends- wants to be cool. (I 'no' how cliche it seems but it has some truth to it).Technology rules, facebook, twitter, tagged, myspace is where OUR friends are. We, the youth live in a virtual world. If we want a change , want to look different somehow we dont get a hair cut, buy a new outfit or lose a few pounds like it used to be done.... We update our profile. And thats it. Want friends? send a request to the person. And thats it. Admittedly what she did was stupid, reckless but it seems to be just another teen looking for another virtual friend. Sad but true.
Treasure, I agree with you totally, and the focus of the article is that PARENTS need to think about what their kids are doing, understand the uses more and be MUCH more proactive and much better guardians for their kids, who really don't know any better, but think they do and are racing ahead all guns blazing.
It's difficult indeed for most parents many of whom are confused and even scared to get into modern tech, but we as a society need for parents to understand very well.
WE, the adults are the ones who have allowed this, we can't just sit back and say, 'well that's how it is with the young kids, they have to have....' We MUST bear the responsibility for guiding them, so we need to acquire the ability to do that if we are going to hand them the tech - I'd love to see a series of workshops, more articles, PSAs and MUCH more.
The same companies that are PROFITING nicely from selling us the devices and services should do the right thing for the society and sponsor these things...
