HERE COMES VAT!

Canada has the same thing, although they have brought it down to 12%. The country cannot function properly without those taxes and it is also a way to spread the wealth and take care of the poor, build roads and infrastructure, pay public servants, finance social programs like healthcare etc...
Yes, we complain of taxes here in Canada but we're taken care of, unlike our unfortunate American neighbours.

VAT will help Saint Lucia.

How do you know that VAT will help Saint lucia and why do we compare developed nations with an island half of it population cant count. Without proper organization and a support structure VAT will never be successful. Only time will be the judgement of that. I am Pro VAT and anti ignorance.

Every nation big or small has implemented measures to curb it's growing debt. We in St. Lucia need to do the same otherwise we fall prey to the big fish we owe. Once you owe you have to pay back. When you cannot pay back in cash, something else must give in . It's about time we make an effort to become truely independent. Implement Vat.

I hope PIP understands that he owns VAT. If things go wrong sucker with his face pasted at the top of the story is the guy to blame. LOL

Ask the people of St Kitts and Nevis. They are under threat to loose their land. The said land was used as collatoral for loans taken by their government (Denzel) which they are unable to pay back to the bank. The Iranians are lined up to buy vast amounts of land which the locals can ill afford. This the nature of debt. OWE or be OWNED.

The rest of the world is looking at Saint Lucia and laughing. Because they know that they too have to pay sales tax or what have you on consumption. Saint Lucians who travel pay the tax all the time when they come to New York. It is unfortunate that people like Tyrone Maynard and the Hotels Association and the failed UWP seem to think that this is the catalyst that will break the present government's back. They are using that as a ploy, when they know that this is inevitable. The question that needs to be asked now is: Are we comfortable with Stephenson and his merry gang managing the affairs of Saint Lucia? Or are we going to accept measures which people all over the world have been using for decades? Are we comfortable in going with our begging plate to those same people when we are averse at implementing the same measures which they use to keep their economy afloat? We are caught between a rock and a hard place, and it takes a government with courage to take those measures, courage people like Tyrone seem to lack if they were place in this similar position. The tourist knows of sales tax and have no problem in paying extra for fine service. Of course over-all the VAT will have an impact on everyone, but Tyrone should have the courage to tell his members that not a cent will be deducted from their portion of the service charge allotted to them, and stop playing politics with the innocent who look to you for guidance.

I do think that the tax system can be productive if it is done with good creative thought process. Its obvious that there should be an income threshold as planned. As to whether its the right cut-off point, i think that should be calculated carefully due to the daily cost of living in an average sized household in St.Lucia. Now in my opinion, certain vices like cigarettes, alcohol, gentlemen's clubs and the like should be taxed at the highest levels. Also as a result of those mentioned there is going to be mass evasion of tax responsibility and measures should be put in place to improve interdiction of goods coming into the country. Matter of fact the govt should make it such that its cheaper to buy local than import the likes of cigarettes, alcohol etc. Its about time we find ways to combat those ills of society in other ways that put the responsibility to the individual as opposed to arresting and in the case of cigarettes, advertising and persuading smokers that those are no good for their health. This should increase the awareness of the masses that we should all live more responsibly. We definitely need to wake up as a supposedly independent nation. Way too much partying and not enough emphasis on development of youth from birth. Lets think more about how can we be more creative as a nation. We can do it like every other nation who has developed. Just that its a difficult time to start it; certainly not impossible to do.

Above: like your point about higher taxes on things like cigarrettes and alcohol. That has been implemented in some places and has dramatially reduced smoking in these places.

This crisis presents an opportunity for St. Lucians to seriously buckle down and make some changes that will be difficult, but long term can have a positive impact on our country. Unfortunately, we sometimes lack vision-we thrive on instant gratification. We, along with our elected officials lack the will. We will not be able to come together as St. Lucians to do what's right for St. Lucia. With all the good things we have going for us, we have little pride in country.

How comes Kenny is enjoying a tax payers vacation in New York when VAT is introduced to the country tomr?

Shoudn't this man be on the island?

Anonymous said...

There are too many greedy people on this fair isle, there are quite a few vendors who are owning so much, e.g. houses , vehicles and boast they don't pay taxes because the income is not quantifiable, whilst low wage earners get tax deducted through their places of employment. I find it hard to believe that a large proportion of people want to have services but not contribute to getting them. I hope the VAT is a fairer system, only time will show that.

I can't understand why the UWP are making so much noise about VAT when they would have implemented it as well.Good on Kenny for having the courage to implement it sooner rather than later. In Britain VAT has been implemented and we have got to leave with it cause in the long run we don't want our kids future to be in total ruins.Maybe it is time for St.lucians to start buying local and change their lifestyle and tighten their belts.

Here comes VAT all dressed in red.
Better Days Have Arrived!

A steady hand in the time of storm. It is, indeed, commendable that the administration has steady hands on the ship of state in this global economic blizzard. Above all the clammor of world monetary dragons, it behoves conscientious leaders to look especially to the well-being of the people - keep poverty, discontent, and corruption from the doors of, especially, underprivileged people; cut the bread in a million pieces and make certain that every mouth gets a morsel and above all stay far from this egregious buying of nations and selling of workers on the high markets of the world.

And???

What is your point????

WHAT TAX PAYERS VACATION @$$ HOLE. THE UNITED NATION IS CURRENTLY IN SESSION AND EVERY NATION IS IN ATTENDANCE. WHY CANT "WE" JUST SHUT OUR BACK DOOR WHEN "WE" SPEAK OR ABOUT TO SPEAK OUT OF IGNORANCE? YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE THE GREATEST VOCABULARY TO MAKE DECENT COMMENTS WHILE BLOGGING. HOWEVER YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST VOCABULARY AND STILL MAKE AN @$$ OUT OF YOUR SELF.

a box of juice just went from 1.85 (last week) to 2.23 (today). my salary hasnt increased, my means of revenue hasn't brightened up either- but VAT is here! Before such an initiative, it would only sound right that the average st. lucian was provided with the means of increased purchasing power. My grandmother has a garden, so I guess its lime, guava, passion fruit, and cherry juice for me. "Buy local" sounds perfect... when you have no other choice! I blog this note while enjoying my last Pinehill juice drink!

Good that will have us Lucians to get health by eating local. To many people with one leg from diabetes. None of us know what we are drinking in that box of juice.

8:40 AM what colour would Vat would have been, when UWP had implemented it in april this year? Would it be bitter days? People we have to stop talking NONSENCE.

Anonymous said...

The colour of VAT should be green.

Finally one of the incompetent architects of St. Lucia's demise of the past 15 years has come out from under the shadow of his "big belly" boss.

Phillip Pierre the shadow who signed onto Rochamel and Grynsberg with his boss Kenny/Tony, the NCA supporter during its years of mismanagement and one who could do nothing significant with tourism during its boom years is now finally facing the public with VAT because his cowardly Prime Minister cannot take the heat.

One incompetent covering for another and St. Lucians will be fooled into beleiving that because you change the cover on the garbage bin that somehow it will smell better.

Once more we get a "6 for a 9" from the liberal/progressive failures in the Labour Party.

All Kenny and Phillip did for years was borrow and spend foolishly now St. Lucians are paying the price with VAT.

Anonymous said...

Common PIP- do something about your mustache before I apply a 15 percent VAT for grooming.

LOL

I have never seen a party that looks deflated like the SLP. Just have a look a them. There are worry looks all over their faces.
Chezz, how can a party that just won an election a year ago look so deflated?
It has only been 10 months and so many people are voicing their dissatisfaction.

Phillip Piere is one more in a line of incompetents thatwe have thrown up in the political system in St. Lucia from Damien Greaves to Menissa Rmbally.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, Kenny should have been in St. Lucia for the introduction of vat- and not go and buy barrels of food supplies to bring back! i think im educated but the only word that comes to mind when describing Pierre is 'sucker' or 'suck-up.' these people love Kenny or fear Kenny, but whatever it is Kenny gets what Kenny wants. King is no better- i even refused to wear my yellow polo shirt for fear of association with the UWP. But bitter days are here, things are hard, so its yellow polo for me

I don;t think we should have any more elections in St Lucia. It's a waste of time. Next time just hand a few good men to run the country and call that George!

Only days after implementation and our people are feeling Phillip and Kenny's Values Added Tax !

There is much anguish and gnashing of teeth in every village and town but them what did we expect?

How did you expect Kenny and Tony to borrow 2 billion dollars over their terms in office and expect that there would be no repercussions?

When Kenny and Phillip came into power we were paying $1.25 million per MONTH in interest on debt.

Now we are paying $1.5 million per WEEK in interest payments on the debt that PHILLIP PIERRE accumulated on the backs of St. Lucian children.

The $300 million that Kenny and Phillip borrowed this year alone will cost us $20 million in interest payments next year!

So where do you think that the VAT money is going? To pay for fat salaries for failures like Menissa Rambally who ran like a coward after the last Elections!

For all of that we have bearly had growth of more that an average of 1% annually with these inept managers in office.

So St. Lucia - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

Anonymous said...

Kenny and Phillip have gone of 25 trips out of St. Lucia in just 10 months. Jamaica, Antigua, South Africa, New York, Miami, Trinidad, Mauritius, London Etc.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK VAT IS PAYING FOR?

UK MAY IMPOSE VISA RESTRICTIONS

so now the UK may impose visa restrictions on St. Lucians!!

Woy, Woy mi JAB LA Kenny and PHILLIP !!!

Everything they touch turn to garbage !
