Big Fish, Small Fish, Major Problem

Mary Jane is a red herring. It is a dangerous poison for the young (under 21) and those without a sense of purpose. Alcohol causes far more damage to the individual and society. In Europe you don't see the hospital full on a Friday night from smoking too much - you do for booze. Cocaine is even worse.

Small amounts of mj should be permitted. Why don't you start selling it to USA? Even they starting to permit it. St Lucia getting tough just as everyone else is using more evidence based approach.

From my street experience, the dealer or fish (big & sometimes small) usually have police protection. In fact he may be selling the POLICE's COKE. Coke is what we need to irradicate. WE have no labs. IT's coming from somewhere. It's coming through customs. Some have the previllege to walk through custom unchecked (TOURISTS). Some have their own aircrafts( HOTELS) and come and go as they please. These are the big fish. When the police is caught, he is just simply transferred to another town. Coruption-Coruptioon. Our borders are very porous. Numerous border posts need to established and need not be permanent. Mobility is important. It would not hurt to systematically check all fishing vessels. Just saying.

Stan,

Even you have been tricked into strait-jacketing your thinking by a society that is subservient to the dictates of European enslavement. What exactly about marijuana has driven you to “crusade” against the young and old smokers of the weed? It is obviously not the intoxicating effects of inhaling cannabis, since you have made no mention of the ravages inflicted upon the population by alcoholic consumption, as Saint Lucia ranks as one of the top consumers of alcohol in the WORLD?

Show some consistency Stan; if you are against intoxication, let's start with the arrest of the priest who get HIGH on wine daily while they are entertained in the confession box, by what you did last night after your ingesting too many PITONS.

Did you write, “the obvious defense to eradicating the illegal drug trade is …. employment.”??? what the hell is your problem Stan? Too much bounty rum?

“His reasons are as two
grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff: you
shall seek all day ere you find them, and when you
have them, they are not worth the search. “

Stan you ever heard of Prohibition era USA? Prohibition in the United States was a national ban on the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933. You might benefit from the lessons therein.

Bishop,

Why not advocate the DEATH PENALTY for anyone found smoking a marijuana Joint, Bishop?? Death by Firing squad or by hanging? How about the Guillotine?? YES!!! I'll DRINK to that, PITON; “sey san nous mem”! Dumb drunks! while you remain anesthetized on OxyContin (and other oxycodone drug)

Then when you have killed enough of these DANGEROUS marijuana smokers on the island you can crusade in the USA and England - there's your opportunity to out perform Hitler.

Son of Man, are you saying that Stan should not encourage the police to uphold the laws of the land? Are you saying that people should break the law just because people think they have a right to smoke weed? And by the way, alcohol is legal. Let Stan do his job. You should be more concerned with trying to get the laws here changed to make alcohol illegal.

Don't kill the messenger.

Don't pay any attention whatsoever to this Son of Man individual! he is just one crazed religious fanatic crowding every blogging area with his radical views. Wouldn't surprise me the least bit if he's a criminal.

Let me concede that the objective of this illegalization of Marijuana is to prevent intoxication, since it is now well established that marijuana's beneficial medical applications far outstrips any detrimental product from its recreational usage. As a result of this reality, many States have enacted Medical Marijuana laws designed to accommodate the sick persons that are helped through its usage – cancer patients are examples – with several ballot initiatives to decriminalize marijuana in several states scheduled for the November 6, elections.

If we are against intoxicants, why are we ranked third in the World for the most consumption of the drug alcohol - a catalyst for diabetes now affecting thousands of Lucians???

What troubles me is the hypocrisy of the Drug Laws that ruins the lives of a young person with a stigma that can affect them for the rest of their lives if convicted of smoking a marijuana joint.

in the spring of 2005 when Donald Tashkin, a professor of pulmonology at UCLA's David Geffin School of Medicine, revealed at a conference that components of marijuana smoke, although they damage cells in respiratory tissue, somehow prevent them from becoming malignant. In plain English, marijuana prevented Lung Cancer.

The reality is Saint Lucia has to be given permission to legalize cannabis by the Pharmaceutical gangsters to enact such a law, which makes a thunderous statement about “Independence”; In the mean time trained subjects of their Queen of Lucians will simply regurgitate what they have been trained to think.

Son of Man, it never ceases to amaze me how you choose to want to adopt the American approach to things when it comes to your selectivity of issues.

When it comes to ideologies that are not insync with what you believe in, America is the worst beast on the planet. now that weed seems to be something that they lean in favour of, you're on their bandwagon. I think you need to put an end to your double-standard approach in how to get things done. Do some soul-searching before you go posting your vain ideas.

i am not concerned right now about crime... what i do not like and thats why i NEVER VOTED IN THIS DAMN COUNTRY... THAT IF A PREVIOUS GOV. I AM ANGRY AT SLP .. I MAY PREFER THEM BUT THEY UPSET ME DAMN IT... i mean even if an airport cost close to $400 MILLION EC dollars...

i mean all airports all over the world are heavily financed and the good thing is ALL AIRPORTS ARE SELF SUSTAINING IN REPAYMENTS OF THEIR LOANS... AIRPORTS PAYS FOR ITSELF .. so SLP have no damn excuse to say that crap the airport is too expensive..and the island need to focus on the EAST COAST ROAD CRAP..LUCIAN PPL ARE SO BACKWARD.. I am flattered at how you are perpetually "amazed" by my American approach, don't be so “Star-Struck”. LOL. Just stop drinking all that “Spirit-of-Saint Lucia, Pirate Bounty Rum” to reduce the brain damage caused by your favorite pastime. Here are some facts about this "war on drugs"/Marijuana if you have brain-cells left to understand.

This “Get tough on crime” agitation by Bishop, was the racially coded rhetoric used by miscreants like Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan to win the affection of the Racist white voters who were resentful of the progress made by Blacks in the struggle for civil rights. Soon the Federal Prison inmate population exploded, increasing by 66%. Approximately 500,000 people are incarcerated today for drug offenses in the USA, compared to 41,000 in 1980. Some 33,000,000 people have been arrested since this so-called war on drugs began.

Many of the people arrested, four out of five are arrested for possession of a few joints and coerced into a plea bargain to avoid the punitive drug-law sentencing mandated by legislation, and most of those arrested have no history of violent crime.

It is a myth that the big Kingpins will be put out of service; what are you drinking; 100% proof “wom Blanc” under the CDC?? The Big Kingpins are the Bank of America and Barclays Bank engaged in laundering Trillions of US dollars of the Drug Trade.

Again, most of the arrest are for possession of marijuana a drug not only less dangerous than tobacco or alcohol, but has been shown to have several medical benefits. So Bishop smelling the fragrance of Cannabis might save you from the lung cancer generated by your frequenting the tobacco smoke-filled rooms, that you exhibit no abhorrence towards.

Son-of-man,
It is indeed unfortunate that marijuana have been caught-up by association in the narcotics trade war. But as you rightly mentioned relief is on the way with all this medicinal marijuana regime being adopted by States. The problem with marijuana have always been the effective taxation of the product, and you see the direction in which the new legislations are heading, where taxation on medicinal marijuana is beginning to feature prominently in States budgets. The problem, however, is coke and the other narcotics, which your condemnation of Stan's article, seem to paint you as a proponent of its use. For this the drug cartels of Mexico and South America and even the American sponsored Poppy farmers in Afghanistan would love you for!

The generation of taxable income from the sale of Medical usage of marijuana is certainly an interesting arrival to this subject. I had seen some headlines proclaiming the income benefits to some States and after reading your blog took another look and found your account extremely accurate; e.g. -

[October 22, 2012  |
In a 13-minute segment broadcast Sunday night, CBS’s “60 Minutes” explored Colorado’s budding medical marijuana industry, and heard from a former drug cop turned tax enforcer who insisted that the industry has helped Denver beat the recession.

But the economic impact on Denver? According to Matt Cook [4], a former narcotics officer who oversees enforcement at the Colorado Department of Revenue, “it’s huge.”
“Look at all the electrical contractors, HVAC contractors,” he said. “The number of ancillary businesses — it’s huge. Tax revenues exceeded, I believe the last number I heard was an excess of $20 million.”
Cook helped write the state’s medical marijuana law, and works as a consultant for medical marijuana businesses in the state. Speaking to “60 Minutes,” he said that the industry accounts for “over a million square feet of lease space in the Denver area.”]

I am not a proponent for using any “drug”, aspirin, Ibuprofen, cough drops, alcohol, cocaine or any intoxicant, except where the medical benefits are paramount. At this time I lack sufficient information pertaining to the indigenous peoples of South America utilization of the Cocoa plant and its benefits to present an informed argument – but like the marijuana plant the Cocoa plant may have legitimate medical applications. Thanks for the “Taxable angle” of this subject.
