There are zillion lessons here for our tourism minister and tourism sector. First, I believe that such a critical sector ought be under the direct control and direction of a more senior member of cabinet such as the Minister of Finance. But perhaps, the most important and mission critical lesson to be learnt from all that is there is the maximization of the tourism spend.
Notice very, very closely too, that part of the report regarding Barbados, a much more experienced country than ours in tourism, as evidenced by that sector's contribution to that country's GDP, did not make special mention or take issue with airlift per se to that country.
There was a major initiative on passenger arrivals. The operative word here being arrivals.
Reimbursement of the tax is significant, but not our inordinate focus on airlift.
Nor did that report make any special reference or mention of the region's contribution to tourism or regional air travel per se. And that is notwithstanding Barbados' shareholding in LIAT.
A great deal of food for thought is up there for consideration. I hope someone brings those issues up to the most appropriate and most relevant authorities -- and of course stakeholders.
