I cannot agree with more with this opinion. I see no reason why, as someone who has never landed at Hewanorra, I should be burdened with that tax. I travel through the Caribbean on LIAT, using George Charles. But more than that, I am now forced to book flights that do not pass through SLU, because contrary to what the minister said, the taxes are being charged when the flight makes a stop there. And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the honourable minister among those who went caterwauling to Britain about how THEIR APD would affect OUR tourism? I tell you, we have some brass in this region.

"Since the majority of local passengers travel out only at Sir. G.F.L. Charles Airport, and since that airport is not under reconstruction, remove that tax from locals travelling out of there. Further: Reduce the tax out of Hewanorra to both the locals and our visitors significantly, and when I say locals, I do mean locals. There is a fine line that many St. Lucians residing abroad get away with in these circumstances, and it is the fact that they present a foreign passport to immigration, and still want to contest the fact that they are St. Lucians because they were born here. Well I say, if you have pledged your allegiance to another country, then you belong to another country, and in the respect of airport tax, you are a foreigner."

One problem with limiting it to only locals is that the tax is being collected by the airline at the time of purchase of the ticket. Would the airline have to do verification to determine whether the consumer has a St. Lucian passport or not. I guess it could be done as an honour system and if the traveler has lied about whether they have a St. Lucian passport or not then they have to pay the tax plus a service charge at the airport when departing.

One of the more interesting aspects
of this deal is the company that is the lead contractor. The company
is Delant Construction and its
president is Juan Delgado. This company has been involved in several instances where it was found to have bribed public
officials in order to win contracts.
At first glance anyone looking at this deal would think this goverment was either incompetent
or had lost touch with reality, but
another explanation is that maybe
some evil men saw this as their
opportunity to have a more opulent
lifestyle at the expense of the average St.Lucian.
Can anyone justify spending that
amount of money when you cannot
provide your people with something
as basic as water.

We vote idiotic people to parliament who go ahead making idiotic decisions. But don't insult idiotic St. Lucians with this idea. They will throw at you their usual idiotic curse of 'you are arrogant'. Where ignorance is bliss it is folly to be wise.

You guys are mentally retarded! As proud Lucians so what if we contribute to the redevelopment of our international airport by paying a tax?? Really??? If we want to play BIG SHOT and travel every month or year then why are we complaining about a $35 tax. Stop taking advantage of opportunities because when we in foreign countries and airlines impose their extra charge for a second bag or increase taxes we don't complain. we just accept it and keep moving. But somehow once we in St.Lucia every Lucian thinks they know best!

Last Anon (May 10, 2011 9:59 PM) I think you are completely missing the point of the writer on this one. The article reads "TAX BADLY TIMED" so I do not think he is stating that it should not be paid at all, I think he is stating that it is a bad time to impose it. He did also say that this tax is usually after completion..did he not?
