CORRUPTION IS RIFE ad like air surrounds everything and ever day living in St. Lucia.

S.T.E.P. is not an economically-sound programme. It is "giving the fish" (an income/wealth transfer), without teaching the consumers of the fish how to fish". That is, how to generate self-supporting and particularly sustainable job income streams, or income flows.

STEP readily buys into and encourages the "freeness", dependent and borbol mentality of just too many Saint Lucians.

Moreover, the fact that most of the jobs are going to party supporters, means that the yardfowlism is becoming institutionalised, both culturally, and characteristically, an accepted way of Saint Lucian social life.

The most pernicious result of all of this, is this: funds to be spent by governments (UWP has it own version of STEP.) are comingled at the end of the day. In other words, they become fungible.

Money is money. We don't differentiate between dollar bills or currency bills of exchange (except for the nominal value denominations when we have payment by way of currency).

However, if the government of the day is borrowing, in order to fund its annual budgetary expenditure obligations, then borrowed funds are, in effect, indirectly funding STEP and similar programmes.

In other words, we are mortgaging our future, and our children's future, while we effectively transfer wealth and treasure (that coming from the Treasury) to the blokes who are our favourites, or to those we particularly favour.

Wonderful work, cleaning the Island and making it beautiful. Picking up rubbish from drains and rivers. Keep up the good work.

STEP is just spreading misery. Do we need such a large contingent of weed-wackers to give well-manicured roadsides? Alright. It is nice to have the sides of the road looking like Bermuda.

But it this the smartest idea of the bright people of SLP to reduce poverty and reduce unemployment? You people are so funny. You make me laugh. The other problem is UWP is worse.
