The socialist collectivist approach to development through CARICOM is for dreamers or the walking dead. This writer falls under the latter category.

Ouch!
The soon to come acceptance of Cuba by El Norte will erode the USA /Canada tourist trade with the lesser Antilles. Cost of fuel ship or jet will cut the cost of travel by more than half to the longest widest beaches in the Caribbean. Even medical tourism will become a major boutique industry to surpass merida , Mexico and Guatemala. The authentic culture of arts preserved in living color by the Cubans, and a host of tourist friendly dispensations will put the lesser Antilles in the shade.
Meanwhile our near Somalia like tribalism is taking us out of contention before the real competition gets underway. Perhaps that is what drives the former tourist minister to make a bold drive at leadership. He has smelt da funk that is approaching.

Ouch!Pessimism is the order for the current economic plight of the Caribbean basin. Some of us may recall the time when a Jamaican $ was equivalent or nearly equivalent to a US greenback- Today it could not buy a marble for a kid to play with. a COMBINATION OF BLACK MARKET, REGULAR REMITTANCES AND OTHER FORMS OF EASY CASH FLOW turned the new generations into expectations they had not earned or failed to thrive to earn in other words the newly independent nations begat too many dependent citizens with no zeal for work or the fortitude for the long arduous march to personal financial independence.
With said welfare mentality the current crop are not capable of participating in any form of leninist or marxist revolution- You can definitely scratch their stamiina or stomach for Mao's Red book.
Ironically, the real doom and gloom is this: Cuba will soon be the darling of acceptance by its- OH how I missed you first love- USA. Only 90 miles away!
Take note that Cuba has beaches that are as long as Gros Islet to Marigot Bay and wider than thrice our widest beaches- and there are plenty of them on the largest of islands. Additionally, they are well experienced in courting their large Canadian and Euro Spanish tourist repeat customers.
Now add the feverish return of rich Floridians -only 90 miles away- who are begging to visit their heritage. The Cubans will control that new bonanza like an Arabian oil gusher. Their decades of frugal living will create sustainability-all on their terms. The megalopolis of Caribbean tourist destinations will be the greater Antilles led by Cuba and even Haiti will get a blow back from this dramatic tour de force.
At the rate we are going? Our environment will look like somalia. Heavily armed gated communities. deforested hills and mountains -few visitors. Ask our former tourism minister on the odds of this happening -soon
