Thanks for this Peter. Debate on the future of GFL Charles airport is useful and necessary.
I believe the future of the GFL needs to be viewed alongside the substantial investment needed to develop Hewanorra into a decent international airport. GFL is now a drag on the finances of SLASPA. I do not agree that there will be any serious decline in arrivals to Saint Lucia if it is closed. An airport is not a destination. People do not travel to an airport. They visit a country and I believe they will do so if there was only one airport available. GFL's location near Vigie Beach is to my mind not a deciding factor; Hewanorra is also located near Anse des Sables. I am yet to be convinced of any social or economic benefits of keeping GFL open. I am convinced however that Saint Lucia does not need 2 airports.
