I remember his incredible accessibility to any member of the public.

Around 1983, I was interceding in a matter on behalf of a recent foreign arrival to St Lucia and went without an appointment to see an official in the government building. Imagine my surprise when, within minutes, I was shown immediately into the Prime Minister’s office to discuss the matter directly with the Hon. John Compton, as he was then. He addressed my concern with the utmost courtesy and interest and, if I remember correctly, expedited the matter.

I cannot believe this could happen anywhere else in the world.

St Lucia should be proud to have had such a statesman at its helm for so long, and I hope it continues to both honour and remember him.

S. Baring Tait.

Compton only cared for the North, everywhere else was second class.

Indeed he was a visionary who fought against the odds. Not perfect but he sure made it ....
