Solidarity with the "Cuban Five"? Hey guys they were spies operating on US soil. I understand why you would like to show your appreciation for Cuba's benevolence, do not turn a blind eye to their malevolence.

Let the Castros free the political prisoners, and abandon the tight grip they have on the people of Cuba, and the archaic socioeconomic model of development.

Go ahead spew venom in response, but I challange anyone of you to exchange your life in St. Lucia for the misery that passes for life in Cuba.

Obama is ushering a denouement the cowards and boneheads in Havana refuse to budge.

No they were not spies they were cuban intelligence infiltrating the enemy who have launched several terrorist attacks against cuba. Why don't you talk about that? The terrorist the US continue to harbour and give safe haven to.I notice you are already on the defensive "go ahead spew venom in response". Whats with your shallow comment that you challenge people to exchange their life in St.lucia for the misery that passes for life in cuba. Typical shortsigtedness with no vision of the future. The cubans owe obama nothing in return for the lifting of the embargo. The bully picks on cuba with their excuse of human rights and their political system. what is china and what does the bully do about them? China big and cuba small you hypocrite. "Archaic socioeconomic model of developement". If they were treated the same way china is treated and respected then you would see the results of your so called archaic socioeconmic model. Stifle them, tie their hands and feet ,drop them in the ocean and say look at them they cannot swim. Hypocrite thats how narrow you think? Tell me THommo what is the difference between cuba and china as it relates to their economic system and human rights and why are they treated different by the same country? People like you like talk about the misery, but you all never want to address the origin of the problem and how it came about. the cause and effect. Tell me Thommo what about the native indians? what happen to them? What about the Genocide that was committed by the whitemen and they indoctrinated people with their cowboys and Indian movies portraying to us the indians as savages and the cowboys as the good guys? does that not ring a bell in your head of the double standards? The simple fact is that the cubans through their courageous stand has bruised the ego of the United States and they are Looking for all kinds of excuses to soothe that ego to save face in light of their failure to have the cubans submitt to them. History have already absolve Castro and many cannot swallow that pill.
Who have their Embargo hurt Castro or the cuban people they claim to want to help? So much for your slave mentality. Stop trying and force people to use your economic system and the blind laws of capitalism. did you know that fidel predicted the callapse of the financial system way back in 1998. now thats a man of vision. the capitalist were too blind to see it coming

"Also on October 28, at 9:00 in the morning, as fate would have it, the debate started on the resolution introduced by Cuba against the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the US to our homeland. Numerous leaders from Third World countries spoke moving words that gave testimony of their appreciation for the indomitable and supportive country that for half a century has faced the ruthless and genocidal empire which emerged in the proximity of our island. A great number of countries felt that Cuba’s resistance was a struggle for their own right to sovereignty.

The discreet and supportive work of our people from the first years of the Revolution, and its heroic resistance despite the United States’ cruel blockade, was not forgotten by the overwhelming majority of the 192 sovereign states of the world.

The irrefutable arguments of our Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez sounded like a terrible pounding in that room sitting at the very heart of New York, and very close to Wall Street.

For the first time in many years of debate, every UN member state took part in the discussion of the thorny and compromising issue.

Even the European allies --members of NATO-- and the developed, consumer-oriented and rich countries that make up the European Community felt obliged to express their disagreement with the economic blockade of Cuba. Our foreign minister gave a vigorous reply to the justifying and plaintive remarks of the US representative.

When the President of the Assembly took a vote on the resolution, of the 192 states present only three delegations voted against Cuba: the United States and its ally in the Palestinian holocaust, Israel, and the island of Palau. An American lawyer with Israeli citizenship, the representative of Palau, --a 281.2 sq. miles territory in the Pacific Ocean which spent nearly fifty years under the Yankee administration-- sided with the United States at the UN. Two other states abstained and 187 condemned the blockade."

Tell me Thommo
where is the democracy the USA talks about
they only subscribe to democracy at their convenience

If you were to take a referandum in Cuba on whether the people want political change and freedom this is what you will find out
A huge majority in the apparatus of power wants major changes. A hundred reports have been issued about the debates conducted in Cuba over the problems affecting the country, and the results are almost unanimous: Practically nobody wants to keep the current regime. They begin, timidly, by asking for economic changes and, before you know it, they’re demanding political changes and individual freedoms.

Oh yes what a haven it is to live in a country where freedom of expression, assembly, and thought, property rights, is denied you to the extent that you can lose you freedom, or your life for expression a contrary opinion on a matter of national import. Sweet.

Hundreds are languishing in jails under subhuman conditions for expressing their desent. Sweet. You Castro apologists love that. Dont you?

I bet it is the same ones who experimented with Communism in Grenada which resulted in the bloodbath by power hungry Coard and his acolytes.

Deal with the reality of the issue a hand thommo. where do you get you if's from? Look at the bigger picture and use that head of yours a little better.Do some research of the policy of the USA towards Cuba even before Castro and the motive is the same.Their attempts to annex the island and to buy it.Remember "Dollar diplomacy", "Manifest Destiny","The Monroe Doctrine", "Roosevelt Corallory", "Big Stick Policy","Teller Ammendment", Platt Ammendment". Then the embargo with it's inhumane policy to try and control this country for it'own self interest. They talk about millions they can make in shipping after Castro is gone. Why? Here is what the the Cuba Policy Foundation of the United States had to say about US/cuba Relations in 2002 "The 40 year embargo against Cuba has failed to achieve US policy goals. Formulated during the Cold war era that ended years ago, the embargo has damaged US economic, diplomatic and national security interests. And it has unconstituitionally restricted Americans freedoms. Long after the cold war,the cuba policy foundation sees the time for change is now." Now mr. Thommo The US must stop hiding behind their claims of freedoms and human rights while they deny their own citizens theirs as it relates to Cuba. Cuba has a right to self determination. If there is need for change in that country it will come from within. The US cannot force change upon that country . The forced change which the US are trying only serves their interest and not that of the cuban people. If they care about the cubans they will lift the embargo unconditionally as they are the aggressors and not cuba.

Sometimes i wander why some of us find so many faults in the Cubian system, such as human rights etc. When right here under their nose in St Lucia, there is so much human rights infractions, eg. our prisons are over flowing with ONLY POOR JUMBIES, the rich alway commit crimes and NEVER GOES TO PRISON. Is that not a human right issue? A prime eg is that Walcot guy who chopped that poor girl, i do not believe he was ever arrested muchless imprisoned. Where is him now? So why worry about Cuba and we are no better in St Lucia. Cuba is so bad we should not accept their help.

Thomo
I want you to envisage an economic and trade embargo imposed on St.Lucia like the one imposed on Cuba and tell me how you think St. lucia would survive such an embargo.Do you believe our Country with all the freedom you talk about will survive.

The Cubans have a right to self determination the same way the USA have a right to self determination.

The USA government is habouring a terrorist Posada Carilles and they want to fight a war on terror? aguy who blew up a plane over Barbados and they imprison people who tried to stop terrorist acts calling them spies and have denied them visits by their families. Tell me what security threat is Cuba to the United States?

Tell me how the embargo has helped those who they want to free and help in Cuba. This is inhumane"mans inhumanity to man".
Like any where in the World people are free to rise and defeat any oppressive government as has happened in other countries.
You must ask your self why has this Cuban government survived so many US Presidents.

People like you cannot understand that maybe the Cubans are different and support their government, and that there are other ways to govern a country and it does not have to be the system that you favour.

A science fiction story

HOW I regret having to criticize Obama, knowing that in that country there are other potential presidents worse than him. I understand that in the United States that office is currently a tremendous headache. Perhaps nothing could explain it better than the information in yesterday’s Granma that 237 members of the U.S. Congress; in other words, 44% of them, are millionaires. That does not mean that every one of them is obliged to be an incorrigible reactionary, but it is very difficult that they might think like any of the many millions of U.S. citizens who lack medical care, are unemployed or have to work hard to earn a living.
Obama, of course, is not a beggar, he possesses millions of dollars. As a professional he was outstanding; his domination of language, his eloquence and his intelligence are undisputed. Despite being an African American he was elected president for the first time in the history of his country in a racist society that is suffering from a profound international economic crisis, the responsibility for which falls upon itself.
It is not about being or not being anti-American, as the system and its colossal media try to describe its adversaries.
The U.S. people are not responsible for, but the victims of an unsustainable system and, what is worse, one that is now incompatible with the life of humanity.
The intelligent and rebel Obama who had to endure humiliation and racism during his childhood and youth understands that, but the Obama who is educated and committed to the system and the methods that led him to the presidency of the United States cannot resist the temptation to pressure, threaten and even deceive others.
He is obsessive in his work; possibly no other president of the United States would be capable of committing himself to a program as intensive as the one that he proposes to undertake in the next eight days.
According to his program, a wide-ranging tour will take him to Alaska, where he is to talk with troops deployed there; to Japan, Singapore, the People’s Republic of China and South Korea; he is to take part in the meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); he will have talks with the prime minister of Japan and His Majesty Emperor Akihito in the Land of the Rising Sun; the president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang; of Russia, Dmitri Medvedev, and of the People’s Republic of China, Hu Jintao; he will give speeches and press conferences; he will carry his nuclear briefcase that we trust he will not need to use during his accelerated tour.
His security adviser has informed that he is to discuss with the president of Russia extending the START-1 Treaty, which expires on December 5, 2009. Certain reductions in the enormous nuclear arsenal will doubtless be agreed, without significance for the economy and world peace.
What is our illustrious friend thinking of taking on during his intensive voyage? The White House has solemnly announced it: climate change, economic recovery, nuclear disarmament, the war in Afghanistan, the risks of war in Iran and in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. There is enough material here to write a book of fiction.
But how is Obama going to resolve climate problems if the position of his representation in the preparatory meetings for the Copenhagen Summit on greenhouse gas emissions was the worst of all the industrialized and rich countries, both in Bangkok and in Barcelona, because the United States has not signed the Kyoto Protocol, nor is that country’s oligarchy disposed to genuinely cooperate.

contnd

How is he going to contribute to the solution of the grave economic problems affecting a large part of humanity, when the total debt of the United States – which includes federal government, state and local governments, companies and families – amounted at the end of 2008 to $57 trillion, equivalent to more than 400% of its GDP, and when that country’s budget deficit rose to close to 13% of its GDP in the fiscal year 2009, a figure that Obama is doubtless aware of.
What can he offer Hu Jintao when his policy has been openly protectionist in order to hit Chinese exports; when he is demanding at all costs that the Chinese government should revalue the yuan, which would affect growing Third World imports proceeding from China.
The Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff – who is not a disciple of Karl Marx, but an honest Catholic, one of those who is not prepared to cooperate with imperialism in Latin America – recently affirmed: "…we are risking our destruction and the devastation of the diversity of life."
"…almost half of humanity is now living below the poverty level. The richest 20% consume 82.49% of all the Earth’s wealth and the 20% poorest have to sustain themselves with a miniscule 1.6%." He quotes the FAO warning that "…in the coming years there will be between 150 and 200 million climate refugees." And he adds that in his estimate: "humanity is now consuming 30% more than its reposition capacity… The Earth is showing unequivocal signs that it cannot take any more."
What he affirms is a fact, but Obama and the U.S. Congress have not as yet heard that.
What is he leaving us in the hemisphere? The shameful problem of Honduras and the annexation of Colombia, in which country the United States is to install seven military bases. They also established a military base in Cuba more than 100 years ago and still occupy it by force. On it they installed the horrific torture center known worldwide, which Obama has been unable to close as yet.
I sustain the belief that before Obama concludes his mandate there will be six to eight rightist governments in Latin America allied to the empire. Likewise in the near future, the most right-wing sector in the United States will try to limit his mandate to a period of four years. A Nixon, a Bush or somebody like Cheney will once again be new presidents. Then one would see with all clarity the significance of those absolutely unjustifiable military bases that are now threatening all the peoples of South America on the pretext of combating drug trafficking, a problem created by the tens of billions of dollars from the United States being injected into organized crime and drug production in Latin America.
Cuba has demonstrated that in order to combat drugs what is needed is justice and social development. In our country, the crime figure per every 100,000 inhabitants is one of the lowest in the world. No other [country] in the hemisphere can show such low indices of violence. It is known that in spite of the blockade, none other possesses such high educational levels.
The peoples of Latin America will know how to resist the onslaughts of the empire!
Obama’s tour would seem to be a science fiction story.
