From Bad Manners to Charm School

Man, back up a bit. Charm school? St. Lucian culture is a rough culture. Our very expression coming most of the time from capping what is in the creole is base, crude and vulgar. The GG is not going to admit that. After all, she is part of those who fail to see the limitations of the dialect.

Our behaviour in parliament is basically cultural. The more unpolished roughnecks we send to parliament, the more crudity will be displayed. I have travelled and I have lived abroad, including the mother country. Therefore, I know the difference.

Charm School indeed ... I am in total agreement with Mr Bousquet I am truly sick of nonsensical propaganda being spewed again and again; snide remarks in the House, and on their platforms (where is the respect for The House?).

Unfortunately, our politicians are partly RESPONSIBLE for St Lucians' lack of national PRIDE and GOOD MANNERS!! ... YES, I do blame them in part!!

It would be refreshing to hear them say "Here's what I (or "we") should be working towards ..." (Sure, in my dreams!). Bayteez!

Seriously, I'd rather listen to Buju Banton's raspy singing voice anyday, instead of our politicians insulting my intelligence with nonsensical propaganda!!

Send all the buggers to Charm School - I would gladly take them on, and teach them to eat with a knife and fork too - with their mouths closed!!!

I have to agree with Earl, but his article would have had more credibility if he had mentioned the bad "public manners" that his mate Kenny Anthony has made his own in stock and trade. During Budget debates of the last years he has walked out, played with his Blackberry, heckle opposition members while they were speaking. All recorded for prosperity. Are you refering to Kenton and not Fenton. Earl you do have my blessings. But what about the way our MPs mangle the English Language. Isn't that equally as bad. How come they can never say "Foreward". Insead they all say FARward.!! Three sylible words are reduced to two. We have very far to go Brother Earl. But I support your idea.

Blogger #1 - the mother country? Where is that? What is that mythical land? England?? LOL!!
Have you been brainwashed out of your mind, or are you still living in the 19th century? If you're still searching for a mother figure in your life, I suggest visiting a psychiatrist for some practical help.

Here's the real truth: when the Caribbean islands became independent 30-40 years ago, we did'nt separate ourselves from England, England DUMPED us. That was your mother country!! LOL!
Accept that fact of life and get over it!

Charm school ? Coming from one of the ill mannered journalistic thugs that populate the media today !

Journalism today is about maypuis, roro, the tearing down of individuals and is devoid of any discussion about policy or philosophy.

We have journalists who spend their days dredging the depths or bottom feeding like real scavengers, to then come on radio or television to attack their fellow St. Lucians.
Yet bousquet has the gall to talk about charm school. Where was the "charm school" when kenny and his arrogant posse were walking over St. Lucians from 1997 -2006 ?

I have as arule dismissed what Earl Bousquet.
However, the idea that prospective parliamentary candidates should undertake some prepatory training before taking up the role makes good sense.
This brings to a subject which has caused much debate between me and a friend.
Our point of contention refers to Why do people in StLucia go into politics.
He said their purpose is to make money.
I was confounded by his statement, because Ithought that people went into politics because they believed in an idea they wanted to infuence the direction the nation was governed, they wanted to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the country.
"Oh no he says for a grown man you are very niaive"
I then asked him, naming certain politicians current and hisorical why they went into politics George Charles John Compton, George Odlum, Kenny Anthony Philip Pierre, Fredrcks, Guy Mayers Mallet, Bousquet and a few others, and to my utter disgust with the exception of Phillip Pierre and George Charles he thought all the others went to politics not serve the people but to make money
Well, back to charm school. it sounds to me to improve the calibere of our politicians, it may first be necessary to have some value system , identify the qualities that a politician needs honesty compassion integrity communication skills vision morals love of St.Lucians etc.
All Ican say based on my friends belief Idespair for us St. Lucians.
By the way Is my friend correct? What say you?

From the time Pip used to discuss politics with Irving Ried, Aszi, Etienne and Best and dem, by 'the office' he showed sincerity and a was down to earth. He did not talk about getting wealth out of politics. You can count on those like him in politics today with just two fingers only. And Dr. Anthony is not one of them.

From what I hear PM King has gained much ground in the past few months due to his handling of the Tomas aftermath and the drop in the murder rate.

What have you heard ?

Anonymous said...

Yes. Any return to the same poor conditions we were complaining about before Tomas people will surely give praise and thanks for whatever they can get. They have already forgotten what their problems were. Survival is now more important. We have short memories don't we?

Still some people are still under the conditions they were suffering from pre-Tomas. Yet, they will praise the Lord. They have life, therefore the PM is ok.

Where all the money that was donated and food etc, gone too? It does not matter. The PM is ok.

Has unemployment returned to pre-Tomas days? That too does not matter. The PM is alright. Give us more of the same. This is St. Lucia where we are happy.

St. Lucians have made their beds. They will have to lie on and live with it. The devil takes the hindmost.

Unfortunately, most people do not realize that good manners usually go along with good morals.

Anonymous said...

Yeah! Try getting that from ex-cons and doctors who sell their patients supposedly private medical records, or drug barons in cabinet.

Blogger #13, you might not want to throw stones yourself, you have quite a rude mouth on you too.

Anonymous said...

@Above...perhaps #13 is not in high office/or an elected member of parliament, but a regular citizen, that can speak his truthful minds - for this you should applaud him for his observations.

why not send them to school? Period!

Is it good manners for an "honourable member of the house" to call another honourable member of that house a poodle (dog)?

Wisdom says: "a country gets the rulers it deserves". St lucia's problems are systemic - ALL of us MUST change, ALL of us have to take full responsibility for our lives and nation.

Throughout the Caribbean character and morality have dropped pathetically over the last 50 years. We learned most of these stupid and destructive things from the big and so-called advanced countries, especially from the corrupt U.S. and its world-wide amoral media.

Charm schools is a ridiculous idea because these sort of superficial coverings do not make good rulers, it is a much more complex problem than that alone. If you genuinely want some lofty ideas about training good leaders read Plato's "Republic."
Furthermore, many a charming well-mannered person can be sweet to your face while stabbing you in the back.

Whenever I hear or see foolish comments like the one made against #13, I become more and more convinced that St. Lucians are brain-damaged. How on earth can politicians can get away with so much and still a lot of people can not call a spade a spade. If a politician is rotten to the core, do you think that by hiding this, it will make the country better?

If more people tell the politicians where to get off, and children stop making children, we would be better off. We would not have pappyshow politics like what is on display in parliament. Don't worry at all about accent. It is the retards who do not know how to use the official language of the country that are messing up. Patois is not the official language of the people. It does not matter how much Kenny Anthony, Jookebwa and the Governor General try to make it so. Everything in patois is kaka this and kaka that. It is rough and it is crude. Those who feel that it should be the official language are just as rough and crude as the places they come from. Sans mess, mal-aylevay, cochon.
