What took you so long? Let me commend the effort as well.

"He came unto his own but his own received him not."
Of course the late George Odlum had the gift of oratory and we are yet to see another politician in Saint Lucia or the Caribbean with such charisma and soul. Not only was he a great orator, the late brother George told us exactly what he was about and we all knew where he was coming from. However, we preferred to label him rather than to listen and find the meanings! Methinks it is too late for those who remember him now,had somehow neglected to give him his flowers while he yet lived.

As for the "philistinism" which scourges our nation, Odlum was dead on target. for it continues to this very day. I cringe to think that when the late George Odlum lamented that we are people "deficient in liberal culture and refinement; people without appreciation of the nobler aspirations and sentiments of humanity; people whose scopes are limited to selfish and material interests," he was telling the truth. This is exactly what I see when I look around: As a nation, we lean toward flattery and the hypocrisy that passes off as "peace' in Saint Lucia yet is a sure detriment to us. We would love to be counted as civilized, but we are far removed from civilization...look at how we handle our affairs. We have no sense of national pride, we glorify acts of murder, we cry treason when confronted by men who tell it like it is, we cannot handle the truth, the system that governs our society is primarily geared to suffer the masses and satisfy the few, and we wallow in self pity. Oh what a mess we have made and still continue to make of our so called civilized country. And would we stone brother George if he we still there with us on the market steps, trying to point out to us the harsh realities? Yes we would!
"Philistinism?" That is too soft a description. I prefer to use the word, "Barbarians." Oh do I see the holier than thous hopping mad, but the truth is the truth.
I dare say, in the case of the late brother George, we failed to find the positive messages in his speeches. We could not then see that he sought and fought for our Rights and Freedoms. Are we now enjoying the democracy that we were so desperately craved and were ready to chop his head off for? Alas! it is too late.
Brother George needed to be told his worth while he yet lived.
