why do these things appear in the national paper, and who would pay money to go to LONDON MET?

What's your point. Are you Jealous?
I am a proud Laborian and she has made all Laborians proud.

Excellence, Dedication, Hard work and Poise has always been some of the traits that one could use to describe Miss Fadlin!!! She will be an asset to the St Lucian community!! Let that be an example to the rest of the young St Lucian women out there! You can succeed!! PROUD of you Devon!

Proud Laborian...Proud St Lucian!!!

no anonymous 2, not jealous at all as my educational achievements far outstrip hers. my problem is this: why do our people take loans or pay good money to go overseas to universities that are at the bottom of the heap?

Young Bright Minds: St Lucia's future! Congratulations!!

Senseless words from a small mind. That is anon 1. He/she is such a failure, that it is impossible for him to respect the achievements of others!

To ANONYMOUS # 2 and Proud Laborian, I would also like to add my voice to this BLOG. Every single Lucian is proud when our young folks get qualified with professional degrees. Nobody is "jealous" of this lovely young lady. I WISH HER THE VERY BEST AT WORK, and may she be productive. But I have been asking, WHY, just WHY it still makes the news, when people qualify with university degrees? University Degrees, in Law, Medicine, Economics, etc., are no big thing anymore in St. Lucia. It is high time that newspapers like the Voice MOVE ON with the modern times, and STOP fussing about university degrees, whether in Law or otherwise. There are many more important matters that should make the news. In the next two decades or so, every single household in St. Lucia will have a university graduate. I have a PhD for a few years now, and it never ocurred to me that I should advertise that in the Voice. This is such an archaic practice!!!!!! Let's MOVE ON my people!!!!!!!!!

@ above @10:50 AM:

Would you prefer we had identified one of women going to jail as a prostitute, instead? So, you did not wish to advertise your achievement. You are a modest person. That's OK too, but 'To each his own'!

Get on with your quiet life, and try to enjoy it. You do NOT seem to be do so right now.

Anonymous at 3.42 P.M. you would be amazed at how hectic and unquiet my life and professional activities are. I became as well known as I am in my professional field without any vain advertisement in the news about something as commonplace as getting my PhD in Law... Yes in Law! Try to get the point! We seem like such a feudal society when we proclaim our university Degrees in the 21st century. We need to get sophisticated in St. Lucia and into the mainstream of international mores and conventions. Tens of thousands of lawyers graduate every year in the world, and there's absolutely nothing newsworthy about it.

Congrats Devon!!! Your face in the papers as a young attorney would definitely inspire a young girl or a young boy who probably is at a crossroad in deciding on a career path or just lacks the confidence needed to make that move in reaching a milestone like yours. As of late the papers have been plagued with the inevitable politics and crime issues and reading the little I have about you is like a breath of fresh air. Accomplishing all what you have requires a certain level of discipline, dedication, and hard work and these traits will definitely continue to cushion your journey. Continue to do as well as you have been over the years!!! Job well done!

@ Anonymous oct 31, 2011 5:37pm and your subsequent negative contributions to this article... while we should all respect freedom of speech and opinions... Its amazing how you find time in your hectic and unquiet life to type so much junk... maybe you should divert that energy and time towards creating jobs or how about you offer Devon Fadlin a job in your "hectic" possibly thriving firm if you do have one of your own?

Regarding what should and should not make it to the news that should be for the media experts to determine not you.. stick to your profession... Furthermore, what does taking a loan or choice of University by anyone have to do with you.. is she or anyone going to uni dependent on you for pmts? Like what's with the "zafair moon syndrome" Mr/Ms Phd? There are more important and dire issues in St Lucia that need to be addressed... Mr/Ms Phd.... get to work... It's a positive article that deserves only positive remarks/comments... find a different article to employ your law expertise in.

Proud Lucian!!!

I agree with the last comment. It appears that anonymous 1 is more concerned about the size of the loan taken and choice of university rather than the success of the young lady. In my opinion, we should include a yearly list of graduates in our papers to encourage other young persons do to the same.
Just so you know, the UK still announces and recognizes the names of persons called to the bar in their papers. So this is not an archaic practice. Do your research before you state things as fact.
And yes maybe in the next two decades every St. Lucia household will have a degree holder but as of right now we DON'T.
Additionally, if you chose to decline an interview from the media after you were called to the bar, how modest of you. Otherwise, We (the general St. Lucian public) would love to know that our fellow St. Lucians are excelling despite all the challenges that we face.

You know I'm not surprised at all, no wonder we were chained and beaten, even to death. It's about time we learn to congratulate each other without such negativity. I thought we would be encouraging each other to rise, but instead ignorance always shows up it's ugly head among us, It's no wonder some of us chose to remain "Anonymous". Congratulations on your achievements Devon, I wish you More!! After my comment here, I will not chose to go back and forth with anyone who chooses to fire at me. I have no time for such.

sad to see this "crabs in a barrel" mentality still exist from some of the bloggers. Anyways congrats and hope others can see it as an inspiration. Best of luck.

We Laborie folks are all very proud of Devon. (even those of us who do not care to admit it).

Kudos to her parents who came from humble and honest beginings. Her Alma Mater - the Piaye Secondary School has been snubbed by many, which goes to show we could succeed anywhere. We only have to persevere.

YOU GO GIRL!!! CONGRATS TO THE ENTIRE FADLIN & COLLYMORE FAMILIES OF LABORIE!!!!!!!

Agree with PhD lawyer. We should have lists of people called to the bar published, but lists of EVERYONE who is called in a given law session. As far as I can see, all this girl has done is add to the number of service professionals in St.Lucia, rather than adding to the list of innovators. Not the way of the future, but good luck to her. I also agree with Anonymous 1, that in this day and age, when our people go to university, we should stop settling for mediocrity. No good law firm in the UK would look twice at even a First Class result from places like London Met and Wolverhampton, yet our people flock there even though they are not competitively priced. Research people, research!!!

My problem with these stories (and I mean no unkindness to the people featured) is that thousands of St.Lucians graduate annually. When we see these features it is usually just a case of pushy parents or family connections. The students have not, in general, done anything that hundreds of other Saint Lucians do not do every year. I would not use a lawyer who felt the need to self-promote merely because (s)he passed some exams - hundreds do that. Hopefully this young lady will set herself apart from the pack, because otherwise, she is just going to be another hungry lawyer looking for a job.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, another hungry lawyer looking for a Job? Blogger before last are you telling me that those universities in London you mentioned are piece of shit? Not recognizable?

Interesting discussion on the rankings on universities. For what its worth, while London Met is not highly ranked, according to the following it is ranked above UWI at least according to these rankings which have some interesting methodology.

See

962 London Metropolitan University

1437 University of the West Indies Saint Augustine

2744 University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus Barbados

The fact that Anonymous 18 would actually state that the Universities in London are shit or unrecognisable, demonstrates a high level of ignorance. It is an idiotic statement and something that someone of an obvious lack of intelligence or knowledge would state. Some Saint Lucians really need to educate themselves. It is a fact that a University Education obtained in the United Kingdom is recognised worldwide. Whilst London Met may not be amongst the top 10, it is certainly not and I stress certainly not at the bottom of the heap (anonymous 5) in the world, let alone in the UK. I also noticed that the young lawyer studied at the City Law School, which is in fact one of the Top Law Schools in the UK for the BVC. Credit needs to be given where it is due...well done.

SS. No one cared to see your crater, acne face in the papers anyway....sorry your parents weren't pushy or connected enough to get your face in in the papers :(
