End Police Disturbance

I spent much of Sunday evening taking in the Academy awards. Following this well packaged production, my thoughts interchanged to the Royal St Lucia Police Force, (RSLPF), who did not pick-up an Oscar, despite the historic number of qualified and experienced actors.

The excitement was booming, the game plan was set, heading for a top notch meeting last week at police headquarters here in St Lucia. But before anyone left the rabbit hole and jumped for the exit, Uncle Sam is the first and last authority to the Promised Land where a visa is required.

I make this observation because St Lucia and the RSLPF has become a stage for actors. Previously, the political theatre and the civil service was the norm, now the award for the best actors with no Oscars must be awarded to the RSLPF.

Never before has a leading and powerful institution with the authority to national security seen so many actors, beginning with the chief.

As a result, a record was set last week as the longest serving acting chief, serving for 20 months and counting, followed by the acting deputy, acting superintendant, acting sergeant, acting corporal, and the list goes on with no end in sight.

My expectation with a new government is a time to act, from the roots of failure into a permanent position. Instead, St Lucians were treated to painful viewing of the minister for the public service reading the actors lists on television.

What a show this was. But what good was the advice and to expect differently with the same script and qualified experienced actors within the RSLPF, the public service and the cronies of backstage actors in government?

Could someone update the RSLPF webpage? Obviously, the more things change the more it stays the same. With a new national security advisor to take his place at the right hand of the throne, the stage is set for action on parade.
