You imagine that your past experiences were horrible? Just wait until the next time you seek medical assistance from this antiquated facility; do you think these vindictive Lucians operatives at “Foo-la-sho” will not attempt to punish you for raising these legitimate concern? You will be lucky if you are not administered a “FIXED” medication/injection resulting in “death by natural causes”.

I had a sister that one of these Mal-practitioner-nurses killed by injecting her with penicillin to which she was allergic resulting in her death. I was a teenager at the time and my parent must not have understood what had happened.

St. Lucians to their own detriment have selective memories when it comes to events and politicians in St. Lucia. That is why we continue to fail!

The writer has the gall to mention Sarah Flood Beaubrun in the same sentence as a useless, inept politician like Damien Greaves without any kind of comparison between the two.

When Flood Beaubrun was the Minister of Health one of the main things she tackled was the A&E Department at Victoria where 90% of the complaints about Victoria originated.

Remember A&E is not just an ordinary A&E Dept. in that term. It is the place where the majority of St. Lucians will go for a cold to a gunshot to get treatment. Thousands go there every year.

Before Flood Beaubrun the following was the standard in that area of Victoria:

No doctors after a certain hour at night. They had to be called at their home or you had to find them if not at home.

No triage – i.e. no differentiation between someone with the flu or a heart attack and therefore no focus depending on the severity of the illness.
No Air conditioning in the ward.

Insufficient nurses who were over worked and stressed. These nurses were saints.

3 to 4 hours waiting time before being seen.

A dirty, wild waiting room for patients and their families.

No portable X-Ray machine. You had to be wheeled up to the X- Ray Department in the main building.

No hot water.

Insufficient medication and supplies.

I remember bringing people twice to A&E department before Sarah Flood Beaubrun was the Minister of Health and in both instances it was pandemonium and took 4 -5 hours to be seen.

In one instance an x ray and stitches were required and the person had to walk up to the X ray Department.
The waiting room at the A&E was noisy, packed and once there were young people walking in and out banging doors to the area where patients were being examined. People were cussing and going on bad.

A real 3rd World mess.

After Mrs. Flood Beaubrun had done her job I went there one night with my child for treatment.

Lo and behold – the waiting room was empty and quiet! The nurse was quietly sitting behind her desk; the doctors were waiting to attend to patients. We were in and out within 45 minutes or less. Puzzled I asked the nurse what was happening and she seemed to just take the efficiency and structure as now part of their normal day though she said it could get a bit busy if there was a rush of people.

The Minister has completely transformed the place into a First World facility that could compare to anywhere in the world.

I remember when the people got burned in the Cathedral and in spite of the chaos no one complained about Victoria which was ready under that Minister to handle all the burn victims.

After she left the government the Department went downhill under the SLP Administration until you have the mess that is there now.

What is amazing is that I have yet to hear anyone mention this Minister who was highly competent in her job about anything else but the abortion issue.

Or to take it further no one seems to understand that she was good st her job because she had some principle unlike the scamps in government now.

Was she not the one who also put in the 1st Shelter for abused women and also the one who initiated the successful Mother to Child Aids Prevention program that was copied throughout the OECS?

So here you have a Minister who was brilliant, who saved and improved the quality of St. Lucian lives by transforming the A&E Department and I have yet to hear anyone mention her name in that capacity.

Why does this writer conveniently forget what Mrs Sarah Flood Beaubrun had done?

This writer (who I am sure does not mean to be negative) is just another St. Lucian who does not look at things objectively when assessing politicians.

I tell you – we deserve what we get in politicians because we seem to not know the difference between good and bad governance even when it is staring us in the face.

You had an awful A&E Dept. It gets transformed for the better. It then deteriorates and you do not know why or care?

Instead of complaining the writer should have been asking the question.

Why was the A&E Department allowed to deteriorate after Mrs. Flood Beaubrun left ? He should be highlighting this. Complaining like everyone else does no good if you cannot even recognize the good when it is there for you to see.

The writer also highlights an important point.

What good does it do if Kenny Anthony and Phillip Pierre borrow $150 million to $400 million annually and bankrupt St. Lucia - if we have nothing to show for it?

Kenny Anthony's answer for everything is to tax and borrow and send money after problems.

He never gives an account of the money. He never expalins his actions like Rochamel, NCA or Grynsberg.

So every year he just throws tens of millions at the Ministry of Health but cannot manage anything. This is also what he does in all the other Ministries and we DO NOT CALL HIM TO ACCOUNT.

At least if he is bankrupting the country and taking us for fools at least he should make sure the money works for us.

The VAT is just one more way for him to wring blood out of stone so that he can sit pretty, travel all over the world and provide jobs for party hacks in all the Ministries.

Once again St.Lucians have completely missed the point of this article. It does not take long for these clueless fools to tie every single thing to politics

Your article exposes what has gone on at Victoria for years..
The NEW Hospital is not going to change anything about the A&E after all same staff and same Dr's.
The Hospital needs managment and the correct revenue to keep it stocked with medicines and proper staffing. St.Lucians can not expect FREENESS for everything as the Hospital does not run on AIR. Even the Ambulance Service should be charged for as it is currently being abused. A small fee to cover cost.

Absolutely, the new hospital will change nothing and that is because the elite group guaranteed jobs at the top of the civil service and the SLP politicians HAVE NO MANAGEMENT SKILLS.

Not only do they NOT HAVE ANY CONCEPT OF GOVERNANCE but they are only motivated by their own self aggrandizement and power.

Once the budget is passed annually and they can borrow or tax (VAT) the people and get enought money to 'talk, travel and take' then they are satisfied. They do not care if the billion dollars spent annually is wasted or put to good use.

Phillip Pierre boasted when St. Lucia first had a $1 billion budget but did not mention that 25% of it was BORROWED money. In other words he had no concept that you cannot keep on spending more than you take in, year in and year out.
That is why we have a EC$2.5 billion public debt and moribund businesses that cannot even pay the interest on their loans.

After 11 years in power Kenny Anthony and Phillip Pierre have give no explanations for the billions of taxpayers money they have tax or borrowed and then wasted.

Kenny and Phillip boasted in their second term in office (2001-2006) that they had 'spent' EC$150 million reviving agriculture. Then everyone reminded then that bananas had failed miserably under their watch - i.e. NO MANAGEMENT SKILLS or concern for the people's money.
Their responce was that the banana industry was dead and the concentration was alternative crops. Then the records showed that these alternative crops had also fallen in values by at least 30% on their watch. Responce ? Absolute silence.

The same for crime when murders increased from 15 a year to 45 a year.

Excuse after excuse after excuse and guess what - you all voted for them again.

And Phillip has a Masters Degree in Business from UWI! Go figure!

Mr. Frank Girard, you have raised a very important point, and in the same voice, you have spoiled it with your clear and cheap game of politricks. This is so sad! An intelligent man like you should know better. You showed your cheap politricks when you said: "We are in a sad state of affairs in this country period. We have highly paid government officials who seemingly don’t care about the plight of Saint Lucians, much less their medical condition...there is an increasing number of vagrants roaming the streets in Castries and other communities in St Lucia. Yet we have fanciful ministries and agencies as: ... Ministry of social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment...." etc; etc. WHY did you have to inject your politricks into such a potentially useful article? As a journalist you should just make your point with honesty and decency, and the people and the politicians will respect your points of view. But when you paint up your writing with your cheap politricks, you throw the article into the waste-basket. As a result, although you are making a serious point, several bloggers have even interpreted your mentioning of Sarah Flood in a negative manner. You did not attack Sarah, but because you injected your cheap politricks into an otherwise good article, some bolggers think that you were attacking Sarah. Frank, while you are still a young man, you need to STOP playing the cheap games that buffoons like Peter Josie play, and write with honesty and integrity. Then the people and the politicians will respect you and listen to your arguments with open minds. If you really want to make a genuine contribution to your country, do not cheapen your points with politricks, and you will be a better journalist. BWAPEN.

No wonder St Lucia remains in such a MESS. Someone raises a VERY GENUINE CONCERN and most comments after are about political affiliation and what minister dd and did not do. EVERY MINISTER IS SUPPOSED TO DO. IT'S THEIR DUTY. WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS. Wait till its the turn of your families or yourselves, seeking help at Victoria Morgue. Important things don't seem to matter to our largely reactive and ignorant population. Once the RUM, BARBEQUE,SEX, GOSSIP and BORBOLL is flowing, then all is well. So sad.

The problem is not the hospital or the Government, whichever or whatever government. The problem lies with the people who work at the hospital! The service they provide is sub-standard, they steal the supplies, food, medicine everything. They just don't care and are unprofessional in the delivery of service. Not Kenny, not John Compton, not Stevenson King, Damien Greaves, Keith Mondesir or Alvina Reynolds will be able to change anything until, we, St. Lucians, the people change our attitudes about our institutions. We are getting what we deserve!

A recent report on aid money spent in Africa by the EU noted the following.

THe European Union ‘does not have a specific definition of value for money’, with the result that it does not bother to keep track of the issue (s).

This is precisely what we have with Kenny Anthony. He has no concept of the values of money he tax or borrowes in St. Lucians' name. He only understands the concept of money in terms of what he can get and not in terms of the government money he wastes.

So he was happy that a private citizen gave him a vehicle in his first term. Did he pay tax on it?

He is happy that he has a pension from CARICOM and one coming from the people of St. Lucia when he leaves politics. Does he also get one from UWI?

How much gratuity is he due when he retires $500,000, $700,000 - how much? Has he collected any yet?

That is all he knows - what is in it for him?

He is so good at taxing and spending but how much has he given individually to charity between 1997 -2012?

Liberals like him like to give out other people's money but like Al gore and Joe Biden in the US they do not like to give any of their money to others.

These people are only in it for themselves and they have fooled us enough to think otherwise!

That is why he has no concern about the state of the A&E Department and what his Administrations does with the peoples' money.

See why Stephenson King, foreigner Compton's an errand boy, was only reading speeches, and knew sweet f k-all about running an effecient ministry of health? Yet, the idiots voting for the UWP said that this, as an experienced minister, qualified him to be prime miniser.

Yeah right! He had many years of experience of repeating each year, his performance of doing sweet f k-all for improving our major health institution at that time.

The crap that passed for good government, is the legacy of the UWP. We had 30 years of crap passing as good governance.

And by the way, what did you expect from a buffoon, whose greatest claim to fame was for Mr. show-off to parade around in African dress?

The chickens are coming home to roost.

Saint Lucia is idiot country!

Aren't you aware or haven't you arrived at the conclusion that most of the people in St. Lucia only matter when election time comes around.

A newly elected government be it SLP of UWP is more concern about projects and establishing cornerstones of their administration than the welfare and care of St. Lucians.

I am certain that there are lots of projects in the pipeline to do with hotels, buildings, highways than there is to deal with the common plight of the common people.

Who in the government cares if people have to wait for eight hours to see a doctor and having waited eight hours, go home without seeing one. Government will lose 40 million, 80 million bad investments, cost overruns, buying derelict buildings but they won't have the money to hire extra doctors to take care of the needs of the people. The same people who would sing every five years: Ti croix en ch... Labar, or Ti croix en chou falbeaux. So sit and wait and be patient or go to Tapion if you can afford it.
