There is a learning curve to be addressed. Once the show is assured a significant part of future cultural events, exposure will create continuous improvement.
Vincent is right about the order and not only because of who is paying the piper.
There should not be so many concerns regarding the number as regarding the quality.
It is a darn good start.
It should be encouraged and broadened in terms of BOTH participation and (niche) markets.
Kudos to Vincent for bringing the truth to light. The exploitation must come to an end. I commend him for having the courage to speak up, regardless of the anticipated fallout.
Rather than nurturing young, homegrown talent, many would prefer to keep them in the shadows of ignorance and mediocrity. Let our people thrive (after all, we're footing the damn bill)!
Saint Lucians are just to collectivist in cultural orientation.
In Saint Lucia too, there are just too many copycats; no originals.
This industry requires creativity and innovation to achieve differentiation and distinction.
This too, requires a hell of a lot of individualism in order to bring out any originality.
But this my friend does not sit well with those who just want to be a copy.
All around you see the tiredness and the boring lack of creative leadership in the way which our society attacks its problems.
One person does the thinking for the entire society.
Dull, jaded and tired, the society is served repeatedly warmed up left-over soup as it were fresh food.
This new sector, with passion for fashion, promises to release the latent creative genius and juices in some of us, and make money and fame, but only if it is managed properly.
In small societies like ours, money and power tend to travel within an elite circle--opportunities too. Many innovative Saint Lucians--and I've come to know several over the years--are not afforded the avenues or opportunities to maximize their potential. They're exploited and expected to survive off the crumbs from the tables of a select few. Ideas offered up for collaboration with those well established in various fields are instead poached.
Millennials are individuals first and foremost; this is not the cookie-cutter generation of the '50s. Only those who fear a changing of the guard will continue to insist that our people lack creativity. There are brilliant people in SLU; they just need to be invested in. Thank you, Mc Doom!
As much as somethings may be true...do not succumb yourselves to slander or 'biasness'. Watch and listen to both sides of the coin...whatever it is that is being said
Yes, McDoom, open the can of worms for us to see inside. Uncover the source of exploitation of our people. Chastise the strangers within our gates. They pretend to love us. Instead they put our people down. They plunder and repatriate our wealth. Pretty soon they call us fools and they will consider us too stupid to live among us.

Only the traitors in disguise think and write such utter industrial grade crap, thinking that the rest of us will still buy it.
Boy! Bullshit time gone long time ago!
You doh see dat the bullshits are now totally confused? They have run of believable bullshit to tell the rest of us. They are even confusing themselves with their own bullshit. The more shitheads like your talk, the more bullshit that comes out them. You must be a host on one of our talk shows or a frequent caller.
Get a roll of toilet paper. Wipe especially the corners of your mouth. Pass the other shitheads some rolls too.
The belief that things foreign are always best, is a deep rooted construct in St Lucia.I am happy McDoom has started the process of its deconstruction. The McDooms of the world are always labelled either as mad, or schizophrenic and are made into social outcasts, when they dare challenge the establishment I hope the tourist board treats this as an opportunity to review the product rather than an opportunity to hang Mcdoom. Our local designers must be given the opportunity to improve their standards, and quailty of their work to achieve internatonal acclaim.
I am god-damn tired of red people who feel that they can even when they do really belong, come to my country and tell me WHERE my god-damn PLACE is. Knock off this bullshit!
I agree with blogger #12 (?). It would be quite interesting to hear "the other side of the coin" ... for too many years, the SLTB and its cronies have treated creative artists (entertainers, designers, crafters, etc) with scant respect for the jazz festival.
It was HIGH time, that someone opened their (SLTB) can of worms and spread it all over the place.
Over to you now SLTB, etc. And that includes other entities who treat the creative people of St Lucia with no respect and disdain!!
The "respect" process is long overdue!! But to gain respect, one has to mete out "huge balls of fire", stand their ground, keep at it, and know what their business entails!
If the Tourist Board will only take onboard McDoom's views in this instant. If the locals will only make this known or reinforce McDoom's sentiments at the coming press conference. If they will only allow the infant industry to grow to maturity. If the board members will only state their refusal to sell out for a mere plate of porridge. Honestly I do not have that much faith in the board and willingness to think Saint Lucian.
vincent did his best to ensure the event went as expected, the st lucia tourist board should have had the odassity to thank vincent for his work well done, because being at the show you could not have recognized the foreign models from our own, and in fashion we need a little spice in it with the men wearing lip stick that was the whole fun about it. People of st lucia grow up and smell the coffee stop the criticize and take things to the next level. He came to st lucia to help our designers and models and he was happy to do so, and the tax payers money was not on him, all were spent on the event and the foreign designers, WHAT DO WE HAVE TO STAY ON THIS.
Could it be the producers of the show wanted to bring about some level of feminization of local male models or, perhaps, to convert the men in general?
I am in total support of this, it is time we st.lucians start appreciating our own and stop polishing the feet of persons who do not contribute to the betterment of our nation. they said the future is within the hands of our youth every time its independence, we need to make a broad statement. there are young persons with a visions other than being a secretary a doctor, or a cashier, that is being a modeller, I find that Mc Doom statements are nothing far fetched, it is what he see and how he sees it. I agree give it to them Mc Doom :)
It is sad to see that or hear this is how this great initiative by Vincent Mac-Doom turned out, all he was trying and advocating, here is that, we St Lucians should not allow our events to be "white washed in any way or form. The St Lucia Jazz should be an opportunity for all St Lucians to benefit and not be controlled or over powered by foreigners. Already majority of the music is not locally created or even owned or performed. I also see this whole thing lends down to the local patrons of Jazz, they would not really support the local artist but would flock to see a big name foreigner perform and that is based on what the past years of jazz have been all about. For years that jazz period have been operated on a friends based idea with little to no transparency. I applaud Mac-Doom for the advocacy for change, I respect him for wanting to allow the locals to control what belongs to them, giving them the opportunity and also teaching them how to stand for them selves. To many "big boys" hands are in that pot of St Lucian soup and given the nature of this event I would think that Mrs. Mae would be on par with that idea but of course like everyone here it leaves me to wonder.
The SLTB must take the high road, accept the areas of weakness pointed out by Mc Doom, vow to improve upon shortcomings, and move on. Invite him back next year for an objective assessment--his input is instructive and invaluable.
This is a teachable moment. Being defensive will only attract further scrutiny of the Board's operations, financial statements and publication of tenders. Based on some reported charges, it would be interesting to know whether the SLTB broke even or recorded losses in the hosting of the fashion show.
Moreover, how much of the allocation was used for this show (give an itemized account of expenses--as the Tourism Minister is wont to do), compared with its ticket sales. Taxpayers must insist on the profitability of these events. We simply cannot afford astronomical sunk costs!
Aureus, this place is too small to expect any serious degree of objectivity. You should have noted the uncharacteristic backpeddaling, in recent weeks, from those who often complain the loudest about the government's agenda. The fact is the Tourist Board remains a source of revenue for some, by purchasing creative designs and printed material in bulk. Open your eyes to the bigger picture.
Tourist Board should've known that even if someone agrees to work for free in principle, this person must still sign a contract indicating as much. This would in effect protect the Board against any potential litigation for non-payment.
A confidentiality clause could also have been included in said contract. Then again, it's probably best that things turned out the way they did.
Mc Doom spells doom to business as usual for the defenders of the status quo. Stop telling and selling us your usual crap. Be part of the change or step out of the way.
You think Mae Wayne could go to Barbados, Cayman Is or Bahamas and do that sh..? So how the hell she want's to do it here? Both she and her arrogant short husband should be kicked out of Lucia. Let's start by boycotting the STAR
To have a show like this in St. Lucia and not have a St. Lucian designer opening or closing this show is ridiculous. We don't appreciate our own. Time and time again we put others before our own. It's not just Mae, it's a whole bunch of us. It shows up in sports, the arts, music, business and every other avenue one can think of. We have no pride in our own. We never think our people are good enough, SMH.
That's life in st lucia, save you all energy. I watched the director of tourism walk inside the ticket sale booth and hand over free tickets to leo clark of all person. Now tell me, leo clark needs free tickets to go to jazz??? These are the people making all the big bucks in st lucia all year round.
All questions concerning Mc. Doom will be answered.
Louis Lewis, Director of Tourism? Lorne --------, I forgot his surname, Minister for Tourism?
What about questions concerning MAE WAYNE?
Anyone who has had to work with Mae Wayne will immediately identify with Mc. Doom's comments, concerns and reported attitude of Mae Wayne to the St. Lucians.
This is really just the tip of an attitude that just STINKS.
lET mC. dOOM SPEAK TO THE pUBLIC ABOUT WHAT REALLY WENT ON BEHIND THE SCENES. tHESE PEOPLE ARE TOO ACCUSTOMED TO TAKING TAX-PAYERS FUNDS ON A LONG DIRTY RIDE FOR THEIR OWN SELF-AGGRANDIZEMENT; FORGETTING THAT IT IS NOT THE FUNDS OF THE FELLARS IN THE cABINET, BUT RATHER REFLECTS THE FUNDS OF ALL sT. lUCIANS WHO PAY THEIR TAXES.
The Labour Party has paid large amounts of monies to that company for so-called publications. And what was achieved from these expenditures. NADA.
The problem Mc. Doom probably was not fully aware of, is that he was supposed to sweep under the carpet the truth and facts of the trash that was happening behind the scenes. But thanks to him on behalf of his people, he took an admirable stand; to give the young St. Lucians a chance.
Mae Wayne, could not feel for St. Lucians like the way a St. Lucian would feel for St. Lucians; because she is not a St. Lucian; she came as an immigrant with her suitcase in hand. And seem to enjoy doing business here. Interesting comments about young St. Lucian talent by Mae Wayne.
I am not at all surprised. Thank you Mc. Doom for standing up for your people. You have not forgotten your roots. Despite your international success.
The St. Lucian public; must now demand from Louis Lewis, the Director of the Tourist Board, a transparent Schedule of all the INCOME provided and earned by the Project, that Modelling Project; and ALL EXPENDITURES made from that Inome. Let the Public see just where our hard-earned money went.
Millions of dollars are spent by the Tourist Board, if my memory serves me right, to Mae Wayne's company. We now need to obtain full details on the Tourist Boards income and expenditure and Assets and Liabilities starting from 1996 and to date.
There seems to be too much of a close-comfort-fit between the top executive echelons of Mae's company and the Tourist Board?
Are there any conflicts of interest or lack of objectivity in granting awards for Publications paid for by St. Lucian taxpayers?
We in St. Lucia want Louis Lewis to tell us how much of the Tourist Board's expenditue goes to payment for Publications; and which companies produce publications for the St. Lucia Tourist Board.
How much does the Voice of St. Lucia Print for SLTB. How much does the Mirror Publishing Company Print? etc. etc.
There must now be full accountability and transparency.
We NEED our BORN and BRED NATIONALS to come back home like Mc Doom has done, and help us lift the pall of darkness that has befallen this country with all those convoys of IDIOTS, goons, and morons in government and in our high places.
Damn! We DESERVE and DESPARATELY REQUIRE a break today from the CONTINUOUS scourges being handed out by these coalitions, partnerships, and friends of our rampaging and marauding retards we call politicians.
Take the budget. How many of those jokers paid any attention to making the GDP grow bigger? How many had almost a singular focus of telling their constituents how many pot holes and so on they fixed. Our jackass politicians do not ever realize that the size of the GDP is what helps to pay for the various materials and equipment for completing such repairs. Like sheep, their greatest contribution historically, is either bleating out a nauseating "Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker" or "Madame Speaker". SOS!
The call for a "national identity",does not seems far fetch at all; but it will take a couple generations to evolve and become a reality. As a people we have never had that consiousness.Could this pathalogical state of mind resulted from the traumas which our ancestors suffered during the fouteen times that the island changed hands between the british and the french exploiters?
It is just utterly amazing how an American could just dictate the running of a supposed Lucian event...if anyone works with Mae Wayne for 10mins - especially dark skinned person, they will understand what Vincentia was talking about. She needs to recognize!!!! Treat SL ppl with respect lady, or come back to the US, where even you will be treated like an 'alien'.
This apparent PR nightmare can be easily handled as long as the SLTB does not attempt to malign Mc Doom. If they stubbornly choose to, however, they do so at their own peril. The PR casualty toll stands to increase several fold as they invite greater public scrutiny. Pick your battles wisely. Understand that Mc Doom means well.
You know, it's true what they say--you catch more flies with honey. In one fell swoop, the government has somehow managed to temper--or at least temporarily defang--one of its harshest critics. I've not heard this much pseudo-balance and backpedaling in a while. Check. Mate.
Funny how the Tourist Board never gave thought to any additional revenue streams, apart from ticket sales. Depending on the layout of the selected venue, makeshift show windows could've been constructed.
For a fee, designers who didn't make the runway could've had models showcase their pieces like mannequins in well lit booths--a simple frame of fiberglass panels. The package offered to these designers could have included takeaway die-cut brochures (since it's fashion), flyers and business cards.
Furthermore, why wasn't this fashion show promoted directly at our hotels? A shuttle service could've been provided for interested tourists, because you never know who's on island. (Were there any door prizes? Any audience member would have appreciated a bag from Perry or Meme Bete.)
Didn't the well paid gurus think outside the box? Oh, but I forgot, it is our people who are sub-par copycats. To whom much is paid to, much is required! (And yes, I just gave these ideas completely gratis.)
MAC could also have been invited to set up a makeover booth. Portraits by photographers or artists (who specialize in the type of caricatures that feature prominently in the streets of Manhattan and Paris) could have been done on site. This was, after all, the SLU Jazz and Arts Festival, right? Again, my advice is without charge. Do better.
Although, I am in total agreement with others above who shared their opinions, I have a few questions for the St. Lucia Tourist board. I understand and realize that this year's St. Lucia jazz emphasis was also targeted on the arts, but shouldn't the Ministry of Culture be the ones to host and organize the "hot couture" show? Where does tourism and fashion come hand in hand? Don't get me wrong, this fashion show was an excellent way to showcase the magnificent talent of St. Lucian fashion designers, but I strongly believe a show of this magnitude would have been more effective if it were incorporated with the St. Lucia fashion week, and there would sufficient time to showcase each or every designer’s talent. The mandate and focus of the St. Lucia tourist board is sell St. Lucia to tourist but a fashion show does not bring in tourist. What the HELL were they thinking? Mae Wayne? Who the HELL does this half arse foreigner think she is to undermine, talk down and demeanour St. Lucian designers. This just shows that we as St. Lucians do not appreciate and embrace our own and put foreigners like Mae Wayne before our own. We have a history of struggling and working hard to achieve the best for ourselves and our children; why should we allow this foreigner who came from jackass glory to undermine us and our talent. You see we St. Lucians go abroad and pick up anything that is close to white; then take them back to St. Lucia to enslave our own people. We should appreciate and embrace our people and their heritage. Also, why is Adrian Augier always the chief cook and bottle washer for any and all events organized in St. Lucia? Aren’t there any other people who are just as or more than talented? Why aren’t their services utilized, because they do not have a so called “brand name” or not a member of the elite “fighting class” group who are just as or more broke as the malaway? PLEAZE!!!! There are if not hundreds of other talented St. Lucians who would like an opportunity to showcase their god given talents; but are not considered because they are not members of the so called groups mentioned. The government and organizers of such events should advertise for talented people instead of utilizing “one” person or only one set of people who think they own everything and according to my grandmother “fess yo pa meme sa yo .” Again I blame the St. Lucia tourist board because some of their executives are offspring of malaway parents who struggled hard to give them a decent education to make a difference for their country and take themselves out of poverty, but what do they do? They turn around and forget who they really are and forget where they came from and try to fit into the “brand name and fighting class” groups just to try to fit in. Finally, I want to applaud Vincent McDoom for not forgetting his country of birth and coming back to make a contribution in whichever way he can; and speaking out for those who are afraid to speak out or afraid of the so called groups. He is the hero of the day and NOT Mae Wayne. Vincent is a son of the soil; he has been through the struggles and has overcome with hard work; and I agree with him for not wanting the Mae Waynes, Adrian Augiers etc. to take that away from him. Do they think that they are untouchable…? PLEASE!!! We as St. Lucians should support Vincent no matter what; he stands for what is right; he loves his country and St. Lucian people and believe that we all should benefit and be given opportunities. I watched pictures of the “hot couture” and I could see that the St. Lucian models felt proud to have benefitted from Vincent’s coaching. Harshtag POW POW to Vincent.
We St. Lucians should stay together, support each other to make St. Lucia the best country to live in. I love my country. As the national anthem reads “love the land that gave us birth, Wheresoever you may roam, love, oh, love our island home. May our people live united. “ United we stand, divided we fall.
I hope that the three last comments remain here for a while to get a feel for the depth of feeling and ideas that were left "on the cutting floor" so to speak.
See the wealth of ideas that are possible WHEN MORE PEOPLE ARE INVOLVED IN DECISION MAKING?
The word for it is SYNERGY.
Yet the idiots in both political parties INSIST of giving us "ONE TRICK PONIES" as prime ministers and especially uneducated Ministers in Finance!
"Mc Doom open he mought and story jump out."
MC Doom spells doom for our idiots in high places!
Let's turn the page on all the shit that has been foolishly accepted as unchangeable.
This is a wedge issue! Thanks Vincent! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Let' start making the political eunuchs, misfits, goons and reprobates squirm!
Why doesn't the St. Lucian government deport Mae Wayne back to lebonon or where she came from. I remember John Compton ordered Mr. England and family out of St. Lucia just because he never supported him and his party. Mr England who owned Shipwreck store was an equal opportunity employer and respect St. Lucians as a people. He was not racist. Mae Wayne is a racist and racist again St. Lucians. She does not belong in our beautiful Helen. She is a divider of our people; she is a poison, Get her out of St. Lucia. How dare you Mae Wayne insult our people and disrespect a son of St. Lucian soil... how dare you?????
John Compton was just another of the foreigners coming here to give us hell! He even put more foreigners like George Mallet in his government to mock us.
And for years on end, we gulped down and tolerated all of those insults, and those who helped him meekly and in silence!
A son of the soil returns and points the way. We must celebrate!
A decision of the Board to invite Mc Doom back or not, huh? I hope the Tourism Director isn't hinting at a possible return to the status quo. Or else, Saint Lucians will have to speak with their time and wallets. See how successful the second installment will be without public support.
We really should get away from the practice of being foolishly defensive when we clearly don't know any better. Mc Doom's input remains invaluable. He is the primary reason for the show's success and the level of interest it garnered pre- and post-event.
Sure Mc Doom has a colorful nature, but his work on this two-bit rock of obscurity is certainly not driven by a hunger for fame. That's a pretty pathetic summation to be honest.
Oh Vincent, I hope you have learnt your lesson. Lucian Authorities will never fully embrace and accept their own people's artistic talents. Until they do, musicians, designers, artsts will continue to be trapped not having the support, capabilities and confidence to compete on an international scale. They will use you Vincent but not embrace your God given talents. That said, you are better off going back to France where at least they appreciate you!!
I think as a Saint Lucian Mc. Doom have a genuine interest in his Homeland. If what he state is true then, I need no other evidence that in every Department we are constantly exposed to the Big fish Sardines scenario and no one to protect our interest. I think we should listen to this man although his lone voice may not be very strong. BRAVO c. Doom.

And so god damn insensitive!
When was her last trip to the runways in London, Milan and Paris?

Say it as IT IS Vincent. You are absolutely correct in your summation about Mae and her selective process.
Yeah, they came from where they came from, with one hand in front and one behind. Yet they are the one who think they should call the shots here.
I bet they (Mae)CANNOT do that wherever (she)they came from.
Do not let any Syrians or otherwise make you feel as a second class citizen, McDoom. Speak up!! Bravo!

A real and genuine Saint Lucian has started the ball rolling.
Tell them Vincent. Tell them.
Show them Vincent. Show them! Show them where the priorities should be. Our idiots don't know.
It is a wonderful start to a new beginning! Properly nurtured, it can only grow from strength to strength.

Don't care too much for the lip sticks on men. Does not matter whether or not they are models. Perhaps McDoom had a fixation on lips.
These shows all have different themes. Perhaps they forgot to say that the theme for this one was lips.
Could it be the producers of the show wanted to bring about some level of feminization of local male models or, perhaps, to convert the men in general?

You think Mae Wayne could go to Barbados, Cayman Is or Bahamas and do that sh..? So how the hell she want's to do it here? Both she and her arrogant short husband should be kicked out of Lucia. Let's start by boycotting the STAR
A Saint Lucian returning home to help? Put a stake right in the heart of Plantation Economy Vampires.
Way to go Vincent!
People, kill the fattest cow!
Roll out the red carpet!
Reminds me of when a red brasilian designer was asked about black models in brazil, his response was that he couldn't find them. Go figure!
Mae Wayne needs to go back to her native land, where all they know is insensitivity, hatred, wars, famine, violence and all that is evil.
U.S.? Isn't she (Mae Wayne) from war torn, terrorist country Syria?
Mc Doom open he mought and story jump out!
United we stand, divided we fall.
The Voice is famous for self-censure.
So our retards cannot figure out what is substantial from the superficial?
Mc Doom SURELY does NOT need Saint Lucia as much as Saint Lucia NEEDS Mc Doom.
Little wonder the flag has a slither of white representing the slave group over a broader band of black, the former slave group.
Even the creator and those that gave this a pass have not figured out the continuing insult.
BRAVO c. Doom.
