Allen Chastanet, whose father already own half of St.Lucia, should never, ever be allowed to become the political leader of the UWP; and by extention, a potential Prime Minister.
The son of the richest man in St.Lucia becoming Prime Minister is frightening.
In response to the first Anonymous I do respect your opinion but that is what has been our main problem in the past with our decisions as a nation.Why should it be about his father owning half of St.Lucia? I really do think we need a no nonsense futuristic approach to our nation. IMHO Mr King has been around for way too long and I don't think he has any new ideas which can help our people move forward. We need an influx of new ideas for growth and also youth development. Tourism has been a major asset for our nation and will continue to be there for a while so I think Allen C can handle the dynamics of same pretty well. He will definitely need a good core of party members to help compliment his ability to keep tourism at the forefront and all the other aspects of our society which is needed to promote a good learning, working and sporting environment.
I really don't see the hoopla in this looseR-looser convention scenario. Both of these men are the same. Mindless and underachievers - blind and unable to comprehend the situation that SLU is in and how to approach it; much less fix it. After all they both were in government with the authority to fix it---what happened. THEY BOTH MESSED UP!! Move over guys. Get the blinder of your eyes...the next generation is not blind.

Saint Lucians have yet to hear of the findings or benefits of the consultancy.

I'm not sure there was a real winner here. Chastenet or King? Either way, St. Lucia loses. The party has to reinvent itself and that will take more than a change in party leadership to accomplish this. King needed to go, but I'm not sure Chastenet is the person for the job. But if not Chastenet then who? Looking at the current crop of people in the UWP, the alternatives are not that great.
UWP is made up of legions of regressive country bookies from the start. Right there, up there, couched in acceptable but self-deceiving --- and perhaps even self-serving language --- is our version of the White Supremacy Doctrine.
What on earth that is so wrong with the acceptance that intelligent Black people can manage successfully if given the opportunity?
Barbados, next door, is one of the proudest Black nations in the English-speaking Caribbean, in terms of per capita income and standard of living. The person who brought the country into independence was a POPULIST native of that country and black lawyer -- not a businessperson.
He built the economy on tourism. He moved it away from the mono-crop agricultural dependence of sugar-cane, just as we are still without vision, stuck in banana cultivation today. He accomplished this by shifting into tourism with the help of --- an English White man who took on its citizenship. Data item are not being cherry-picked.
When party political power shifted, the new administration was led by a mixed-race person, who had a Black father. Yet, the ideas that changed the new economic status of that country were driven largely by a Black native who had had the chance to travel, study and work in the private sector abroad, and work at home for the UWI , Owen Arthur.
Even with a smaller percentage of Blacks 93%, and 1/4 million resident population, Barbados has had most of its leaders and leadership as Black persons. It is inconceivable, that the majority Black population would easily accept, or even countenance a non-black person as PM today in that country.
Unless you are completely brainwashed, asking for someone who is vying to be your next country leader to look like you, and not to have to be taught or educated about your life experiences is not being a racist. It is being plain REALIST. And this is much more so TODAY, than it has ever been before, in the context of Saint Lucia.
We today, are positioning ourselves to be the butt of even more jokes around the Caribbean, by returning to --- by our own hands and design --- our slave, plantation, and colonial past, when the island was dominated and controlled by rich families --- even in absentia.
In all honestly, then, would you say that the welfare or the interests of the majority Black people, as now, were anywhere being the first priority of those families?
Consider this for a moment: BUS 101defines a small business as one that doesn't dominate its market. This bears repetition. Twice is nice!
How would you therefore characterize what has happened in the supermarket business in Saint Lucia of late? Is it a small business development, or is it a monopoly?
Saint Lucians today will rue sowing the seeds of their social, political and economic punishment by not heeding the warning signs of already having very weak --- no, almost nonexistent --- consumer protection, compounded by the unfair trading practice of the consolidation of the economic power of food distribution on the island in the hands of one single family. Is the SLP going to do just about anything regarding this?
Now, consider the ramifications, as one political party -- a political party, mind you -- is strengthening and CONCENTRATING that power of the political-economy into the hands of this one same family, by grooming a son of the owner of that family MONOPOLY, to the most powerful political office in the country, which – in effect --is a constitutional dictatorship. Can you believe this?
Now, with thousands of bristles of unanswered ethical and moral question marks raised in the recent past, one has to be totally naïve, feigning incomprehension, or people are plain burying their heads in the sand, if they are failing to see the political and economic ambush that lies ahead for this country.

This is the best thing ever to happen in Saint Lucia. Now we are going to get more aid from England, especially France, Germany, United States and Canada. We have a white leader like them.

St. Lucians are very superficial and get caught up with the “belle couleur” syndrome. Just take a look at party photos…the most light-skinned people are in leadership. Go to any gov’t office, the most light-skinned and straight-haired persons are in charge. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. We are still unconsciously under the spell of MASSA rule.
