CARNIVAL

Carnival, your confinement out of freedom
was a birth to West Indian cultural heritage.

Carnival, with grace you performed your act
drums speaking the language of your freedom,
your words, your cry, your movement, your assiduous labor, for that liberty paid off.
Breaking the sentence of shackles and chains,
your amplified cries to the world:
FREE AT LAST!
FREE AT LAST!
FREE AT LAST!
The sound, from your very soul.

Carnival, how you cherish that freedom,
your privilege.
With your life you protect it.
Yes you bleed, die, protecting your virtue,
you remain chaste,
you dance the freedom dance
sing the freedom song at your anniversary.

Carnival, time has changed your culture,
the heritage you once knew,
now pregnant, its virtues polluted,
meaningless, empty and stinky.
Cultural immigrants having intercourse with you,
giving birth to young entrepreneurs, fanciful entertainers, money-minded, intoxicants, psychopaths.
This is an enormity to your ancestral, cultural heritage.

Carnival, you are now a damn Jezebel,
a merchants' pageant, advertising agency of alcohol,
brewer's beer,
the city streets your sanctum your defiled bed,
your varicolored nakedness,
your unabashed display of parts that
should be the preserve of your spouse,
now scantily disgracing the television screen, intoxicating the minds of thousands,
with pornography, gratis.

This is just a little extract from a poem written by TORRIA 2 yrs. ago.
A man that was a must 2 see at Carnival. Now this is how he see Carnival. the last time he jump in a ban "BRAZILIANS" was in 1980 (33 YRS.)

They've taken a once beautiful thing and turned it into a vile display of childish nonesense. Earl, you are not the only one who missed the show, I haven't seen it in years - too busy working to provide for the future. I buy nothing on credit and I owe no one. let these people use whatever savings they have, to spend on silly childish things they call costumes. (THEN THEY GO ON STRIKE FOR HIGHER WAGES) makes you laugh, don't it? and so it goes on year in and year out. Will they ever grow up?

I must say that I agree wholeheartedly with your article. I am a St. Lucian who migrated at age 17. While I lived in St. Lucia I always played mas. I remember bands like "Sailors ashore on the Hawaii." and queens carnival presentations like "the Garden of Eden." During that time, there were no panty and bra sections. Let us get back to beauty, orginalilty and creativity.
