This U.W.P. leadership under Chastanet is an abomination and embarrassment to Lucians. How could these idiot U.W.P. expel King who was such a kind and beautiful Black man, and replace him with this idiot Chastanet, who doesn’t know the time of day?

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister (Saint Lucia)

PRESS RELEASE

129/13

For Immediate Release
December 31, 2013

UNNECESSARY AND MISGUIDED

The Government of Saint Lucia has noted the public request by the United Workers Party to the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, “requesting exemption from Customs Charges including Value Added Tax (VAT) specifically for relief supplies.”

Try as it might, Allen Chastanet’s UWP cannot resist the temptation to engage in cheap partisan politics especially at this time.

It is alarming that the UWP does not know, understand or care to understand the laws of the country. There was no need to make any such public request to exempt relief supplies from the Value Added Tax (VAT) because the Value Added Tax Act makes an exemption for relief supplies. Relief supplies qualify as exempt imports. Section 16 of the Third Schedule of the Value Added Tax Act provides that imports of relief supplies qualify as exempt imports. It says:

“Goods and services imported during a threatened disaster alert or after a disaster emergency where the authorized signatories of the Office of the National Emergency Management Organisation(NEMO) or the Cabinet Secretary certifies that those goods are urgently required for dealing with the threat or emergency. These goods are not for resale.”

Thus, all the Opposition has to do for the supplies it receives is to seek the signatories of either the Director of NEMO or the Cabinet Secretary.

The Government of Saint Lucia never charges duty or service charge on relief supplies.

Finally, the United Workers Party is reminded that the power to grant exemptions of VAT resides in Parliament and not the Prime Minister or the Minister of Finance.

END.

What an embarrassing ploy for publicity by Chastanet and his U.W.P. boloms! Maybe it's simply ignorance of how the Government operates by a failed politician who after years of bluffing is exposing the ignorance of this Empty Vessel who wants to rule over some more boloms in Palmis, Soufriere.

The exemptions from taxation had already been decided long before the storm. What a cunning effort to undermine the government's swift effort to calm the nation and lessen it's burden.

Did UWP had any exemptions after hurricane Tomas?

Can you Imagine power hungry Allen Chastanet is plotting a coups d'état against the UWP leader of the opposition Hon Steven King in the middle of a national disaster and recovery?

According to Catherine Sealy’s Ro Ro machine Chastanet’s UWP held a an emergency meeting last Saturday morning at 11Am to remove Stephen King as opposition leader. At a New Year’s party Catherine was rejoicing that Hon Stephen King would be fired because he attended a meeting with Prime Minister Kenney Anthony without the political leader’s consent. Ms. Sealy’s went to say “by next week Allen Chastanet will present unscrupulous politician Guy Joseph to the office of the Governor General as the new leader of the opposition”.

If Catherine Sealy’s Ro Ro has any substance, this will validate and betrays the ignorance of Chastanet and his advisors concerning the role of Leader of the Opposition vis a vis the role of UWP party leader (which in comparison to the Constitutional position of Leader of opposition) is in the nature of a club leader! Traditionally, the roles of party leader and leader of the opposition have always been vested on one person. However, Chastanet's greed for power caused a split in the positions and whilst he is party leader, Mr. King is leader of the opposition and there is clearly no cohesion between them.

The Leader of the Opposition is a constitutional position and has nothing to do with party politics. Chastanet is trying to bully Mr. King by "summoning" him to a meeting as if he is in a superior position to Mr. King.

Chastanet would do well to expose himself and his advisors to a crash course in the basic principles of Government and politics. He is suffering from a serious misconception of his role as party leader, which is of no more consequence than that of a Boy Scout troop leader. Chastanet does not understand that he is not an elected Member of Parliament, having being rejected by the majority of the people of Soufriere and as such has no voice where it really matters. He does not understand that Mr. King is in the superior position and he seeks to bully Mr. King into submission to his inferior role. If we think that Kenny Anthony is a dictator, I dare UWP supporters to elect Allen Chastanet as a Parliamentary representative, then and only then will we experience true dictatorship by the Massa of them all.

Chastanet is so DESPERATE that he refuses to do his research before he opens his DESPERATE, tax evading beak. After all those years under John Compton the Master of Ceremonies, Ti Chas, just like his father, is just another ignoramus. But this is what you get when you play to score cheap political points. Why the heck should an Opposition have to write to a government to ask for tax relief on emergency supplies. You don't have to be a university graduate to know that this is BULLSHIT cheap politricks. Ti Chas NOT getting my vote! Pimpa.
