Did King share his bread and butter issues with the IMF?

‘IMF predicts a slow down of St. Lucia’s economy’

Famous Quote:

“THE BREAD AND BUTTER ISSUES WILL CERTAINLY DETERMINE WHO FORMS THE GOVERNMENT”

Stephenson King
Prime Minister of St. Lucia

People are saying where will Kenny get the EC$100 million from. Prime Minister King just borrowed "a sum not exceeding US$50 million" which equals EC$130 million.

I really hope this latest borrowing which has brought this government total debt amount to $1 billion in less than 5 years can have a positive impact on our economy and not PARTY HACKS!!

The IMF has recommended that SLU improve the investment environment, including by establishing an effective one-stop investment agency and simplifying the investment process. Isn't that the situation which the present admin has failed to address? Wherer is the NDC?

That's just another 6 lane high way majee. Go parwol that will soon fizzle.

Run that by me again...Kenny..

Right Kenny , you have always been able to grasp the issue. Its about the economy. When you renter government , take us with you, dont dictate, empower us all. you did some good work in the past but you failed to take us with you. Learn from those mistakes and be more inclusive next time.

To Anonymous 4:33,

Yes so sad, Kenny will definitely have problems raising the necessary funding because King put us in margee by burdening the country with a close to 80 million dollar debt to buy a dilapidated building and another set of millions to rent Hewannora House and to accommodate Bousquet at Bay Walk among other things.
Come again Kenny because we need you to save us from the brink of economic disaster.

I am looking forward to progressive change in this country. I am very impressed with Dr. Ubaldus Raymond, and I will give him my support at the upcoming elections. GO guys you have our support!

Anonymous said...

I said it before and it has come to past. As soon as he smells power Kenny would borrow $250 million or more in our childrens name and throw it down another rat hole. Totally incompetent as a Minister of Finance he is following the same ideological pattern as before. Borrow , spend, borrow, spend to buy votes.

As before it will only bankrupt St. Lucia and kenny will mismanage st lucia to a graveyard of debt.

Talk! Talk! Talk! But once elected to office, nothing changes, it's the same old business as usual. We have tried them both. Both have attained failing grades. Now it's time for meaningful change. Voters, please do not be misled by eloquent speakers and false promises.

Iouana Lao said...

Yes "talk...talk...Talk" how disingenuous and dishonest of you. the fact is that the last time anything got done here Kenny Anthony was in government!

to name a few: enough new secondary schools to ensure that every child has a secondary place, rebuilding of the sorely neglected road networks in both the south and north of the island, improving our sporting infrastructure with two new stadiums -we were placed on the world cricketing map for the first time, the reduction of unemployment from more than 21 percent to 13 percent in nine years.

And I can go on and on with no fear of contradiction. so stop peddling this crap of a plague on both houses...all of them are the same...the lesser of two evils. this just does not reflect the facts.

Those like you and the self serving Rick can tell that to the birds

Anonymous said...

The intended destructive criticisms of Kenny Anthony will only help to strengthen his resolve and be resilient against all odds. This type of psychological strategy always work in favor of individuals who have not denied their faults. Kenny will do very well just give him that chance.

This is why brainwashed Caribbean people get nowhere. St. Lucians do not want to question their tribal leaders. We are UWP so we do not care if we have criminals in Cabinet or an ineffectual government.

We are SLP so we do not care if we have a leader who is inept, narcissistic, mismanages our money or oversees a government that practices crony capitalism and gives contracts to "the boyz" to ensure money is passed back to get more votes.

we have no idea what we mean by governance, we do not know what the goals of government are or how to measure success.

We have become used to and only expect failure in leaders like Kenny and King.

Iouana Lao said...

Again the dishonesty of a plague on both houses.Nobody has said that any one has not made mistakes although quite often the "mistakes" or faults of others are our perceptions buttressed by propoganda and spin rather than demonstrable fact.

So you can use all your fancy terms about narcisism etc. the demonstable facts are incontrovertible.

In being an apologist for what passes for Governance now (using the other side also did it cliche) you are in fact showing your refusal to engage in truthful and objective discourse

Kenny made his mistakes and with his know-it-all "Teacher Kenny" attitude, he made serious financial errors. But let's admit it, the Kenny Anthony government had St. Lucia GOING PLACES between 1997-2006!!! Even the Bajans were TALKING about St. Lucia. Kenny will be one member of a government of BIG MEN, educated men, no ex-convicts, tax evaders, Peter Josie SOUP drinkers, Accidental Prime Ministers, female batterers, money launderers, drug barons, etc., etc., etc. And the experience we had with him just doing his OWN TING in 1997-2006 will force our hands now to keep him focussed. There will be no LITTLE BOY SCOUTS in that new Labour Cabinet, and no drug barons, slapping the head of Accidental Prime Ministers. A new SLP government is ONE HUNDRED TIMES more desirable than the SHIT we have presently in St. Lucia. So, we know where to place our ballots come election day. DONNA BAPTISTE.

SLP leaders show this group of inept uwpees how it is done. Bravo! and Bravo also to an excellent press given by Dr. Ubaldus Raymond...he is definitely the right man for Castries North. King will go down in history as a default prime minister who made petty excuses for the mistakes continuously perpetrated by men in his Cabinet including his own mess.

I honestly feel sorry for those uwp guys, although the are living very large on the Taiwanese dolloars (lol) but that is only for a time. St. Lucians know better...the good term that the uwp is talking about is not for the general citizenry since WE ALL did not benefit from the millions.

The only ones who enjoyed a good term were King's Cabinet members and some persons close to them who became millionaires overnight like themselves.

Yes, a good term deserves another for the uwp leaders who made the millions BUT NOT the electorate who suffers daily trying to make ends meet.

Why keep borrowing money with no results. There are amazing resources here on the island why are thEY not capitalised on, like a canning factory for all the wasted fruit for example. InsteaD OF BUYING TACKY GOODS FROM OVERSEAS THEN SELLING THEM TO TOURISTS AT THREE TIMES THEIR VALUE, USE LOCAL CRAFTS PEOPLE TO PRODUCED STUFF MADE HERE FROM OUR OWN NATURAL RESOURCES. THE LIST IS ENDLESS, CREATE AN ENTRUPENARIAL SYSTEM THAT USING WHAT IS THE BEST OF ST LUCIA. IT DOESN'T TAKE A NOBEL PRIZE TO KNOW ABOUT THESE RESOURCES.

You are all reading from the same failed playbook. Whether UWP or SLP you all have the same failed philosophy that has taken us backwards over the past 50 yrars in the Caribbean,
Kenny and co started the rot with their destructive policies and we have continued to go backward ever since with failed liberal, progressive, socialist policies and mindsets.

We are like Haiti in 1840. 171 years from now we will be wondering why we are so backward after 200 years of so called Independence. Kenny is just one more inept graduate taught all the wong things and following the wrong path.
kenny and King -no difference in size and political reality.

Anonymous said...

Largely cosmetic changes have been dressed up and given new titles. There is hardly anything new here. Five years out in the wilderness, and SLP does not have a plan.

This time we are about to 'LEAP' with Labour, but into the darkness again. Old wine are now in new wine skins. Words like vision have been thrown in for good measure. But when one looks closely, there is clearly no vision in the combination of words that forms the empty rhetoric. Labour's plans in other words can be summed up as, we have done better than the UWP past and present, and 'we suck less'.

If the last Kenny government was so good for St.Lucia, why were they kicked out of office so unceremoniously in 2006?

Anonymous said...

The economies of North America and Europe have, for the most part, remain in ruins since the 2008 world financial collapse; but somehow, Stephenson King was supposed to have waved his magic wand and right all that is wrong with St.Lucia.
Anyway, it won't be long before many of these so-called Kenny supporters turn against him, again.

Anonymous said...

This is the reality. Kenny has shown himself over a 9 year period in government to be inept, a liar (Rochamel, Grynberg), possessing of a "massa" mentality combined with a failed liberal philosophy. He does not know how to motivate St. Lucians or let the populous get a sense of responsibility. In 1997 we projected our aspirations onto him and expected great things. He was and is a dissapointment.

Tribal SLP hacks now continue the charade as he is their ticket to raping the treasury one more time. Already they have confirmed the hemorraging that will take place this second time around. $100 million on supposed job creation with another glorified STEP program from the same failed liberal playbook of pandering and giving something for nothing to garner votes. If there is $100 million for "job creation " or commonly known as HANDOUTS then we can expect another %200 million for "prime pumping" the economy or St. Lucia's version of TARP or stimulus. Yuo know where that took the Americans. More debt for their and our children to pay for.

Where is the sense of responsibility, where is the value system instead of the welfare state mendicancy? How is the Labour Party going to improve our quality of life? We KNOW they do not have the answers. They know they do not have the answers. Yet it does not matter . It is all about getting into power to continue the same reckless destructive practices implemented in our Caribbean states from Independence.

To paraphrase what someone else once said about another elections.

Laabar supporters waiting for their time at the trough could be feeling mindlessly triumphant: We're on the verge of a major victory, make way for your new rulers! Unfortunately even non- supporters of that party are caught up in the cycle of change involving two entities neither of which have any answers. Once Sir John went that was the last sane political and fiscal conservative who had any idea of how to run a country. The rest are lost in space mendicant creators doing the same to St. Lucians as was done to African Americans by white liberals and their black cohorts.

Those who think the next elections is just a clash of the UWP and SLP had better wake up - though I doubt it. They think they're pulling and pushing in a tug of war, but they are dancing on the precipice of disaster.

The only guarantee we have is given the events of the world economy and the political actors we have on stage today that we will be worst off in 2012 and 2013 and 2014 than we are today.

It was all nice an good coming out with a policy statement although i felt it was a statement of desperation. This article fell short on the part where kenny was asked where he was going to find the money to finance what he is articulating to do. I think you people should try to digest this statement and then listen to the response kenny gave about where he was going to get the money. I personally think kenny is bankrupt of ideas....

Anonymous said...

Labour was tested when the world economy was good and they made a mess of it. King and co won an election that no government would want to win in this trying economic time however they have been tried and tested and i think they deserve another term for keeping that ship afloat. from my standpoint labour has not been tested and based on their rhetoric i dont think i would want to test them either.

Anonymous said...

KENNY I USUALLY LOOK BEFORE I "LEAP" AND I HAVE LOOKED AND I AM NOT GOING TO LEAP. YOU AND YOUR LABAR BUGS CAN LEAP ON YOUR OWN AND WHEN YOU DO THAT MAKE SURE THERE ARE BOULDERS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CLIFF BEFORE YAL LEAP.

The SLP and Kenny have only three ways of getting all the hundreds of millions they intend to borrow. Tax, borrow or get as grants fron China or the EU.
China are concerned because of what happened the last time when Kenny promised they would win elections. The EU are even more broke than the US so that is an issue.

This leaves taxing - which he will not touch so expect our national debt to climb to EC$3 billion shortly with all the borrowing.

Anonymous said...

For those idiots who keep saying that kenny was bring the country places between 1997 and 2006 the world has changed drastically from those time so stop being a mutt and quoting those years as a matter a fact what did kenny put in place that would have help us cushioned this world economic crisis. he went on a spending frenzy and giving moneys away like a santa claus. now we need those funds more than ever. such buffooons

Barring the financial blunders that Kenny is so awfully prone to making, he should not be placed in any position that gives him authority to making financial decisions again. Period.

That said, Kenny is a great deal more honest, but not squeaky clean, than the entire cabal that is the UWP. No one in the UWP has any redeeming traits or characters that makes them fit to be a representative of St. Lucians.

That said, the present policy statement reveals the soft underbelly of the SLP. The leader does not have a deep understanding of business nor economics. We have Grynberg and Rochasmell to prove what I am saying.

Ubaldus's presence has made a slight change in the words used regarding the policy. Any economist worth their salt would quickly realise that most of what is there is all hype and empty rhetoric.

SLP, if it forms the government all by itself, is about to ask people to allow it to do the same thing all over again, and then expects the people to believe that we are going to see a different result.

Of course, conditions in the world has changed, but not the old worn-out, stop gap policies like STEP. These policy steps do not reflect those changes, at all.

What SLP is asking everybody is to jump with them in a huge LEAP of faith.

The only small comfort for St. Lucians now, is whether enough independent and third-party candidates can win their seats to force a coalition with the SLP to correct some very fundamental weaknesses in this unimpressive SLP policy hoax.

St. Lucia in this world economic climate, and in its debt position can ill-afford any more financial, contractual and legal blunders under lthe leadership of a blundering and know-it-all academic, with such howling blunders bearing his unique style and fingerprints.

Annonymous 7:52 am.

You are making some sense along the lines I have advocated for years but you are still NOT being practical and only 15% of the way to the truth.

First off. Even you probably will not admit, as would be expected in our socialist environment, that the philosophy needed to revolutionize our culture is the conservative one that our black societies have abandoned to our detriment. On a practical level this means that we have abandoned the Judeo Christian heritage that made the Western World great and have reverted to out tribal destructive ways that got us nowhere in Africa and combined it with a mishmash of liberal socialist policies.

Secondly as a specific issue I know that in spite of his utterly disgraceful failures as a leader and finance minister plus his undermining of St. Lucia's civility and sense of decency, that Kenny Anthony is an intelligent narcissist who with his sense of supreme confidence(one of the traits of a narcissist)totally controlls those around him who are intimidated by his presence. Look no further than the moral coward Philip Pierre.

Kenny is also surrounded by yes men known as hacks waiting to feed at the trough and they are in charge of the SLP machinery.

Therefore change to the SLP is hard if not impossible.

This brings up your point about 3rd parties. I will try not to show my contempt for those who have deluded themselves into thinking they have answers based on the old failed liberal policies of the Caribbean - but let me try.

Who will be able to stand up to the intelligent but inept narcissist Kenny Anthony?

You must not underestimate your opponents and in spite of his poor track record in governance Kenny Anthony is intimidating in the confines of Cabinet or on a 1 to 1 basis unless you know where you stand and are also a confident person and have a set of values that you know and live.

The LPM appears to be, based on the policies so far innunciated, no more than your average office seekers basing their quest on a personal agenda, a wrong philosophy crafted from the same philosophy that fails African Americans and African Caribbean people in Brooklyn. Their environment has only confirmed and buttressed their wrong approach.

Ausbert D'Auvergne is a plausable foil, in terms of character, to Kenny but again he lives in a world of pipe dreams that have failed spectacularly both in the private and public sectors. They would clash within a month of any accomodation and would work to undermine each other. Are they any different in terms of philosophy anyway ?

Yes the know-it-all academic has gone from blunder to blunder so what is the option.

I know the answer to that question but it may take another election, another guaranteed failed Adminsitration (UWP or SLP) before St. Lucians will be ready.
As I said before St. Lucia is just another Haiti in 1840. Different time, same place.

Anonymous said...

A country can limp along with a minority government just before an election. It cannot start with a minority government. A coalition of like minds is needed.

If our politicians have any sense of decency and dignity left after this UWP cabal, the experience with Compton convincingly shows that crossing the floor helps no one but the politicians themselves.

More than this, this frustrates the will of the people after the votes have been cast.

A coalition is the best bet for St. Lucia at this point in our sordid political history.

The followers of the SLP cannot see any other person at the upper levels of their party worthy of being the leader of the party. And there you have it. Another 'Daddy Compton' with no successor, but we are facing a very lousy leadership situation yet again. This time it is in the 60-plus year old Labour party.

To curb the nonsense that Kenny is about to do yet again according to this policy statement, with his dirty habit of secret financial fiascos, we need to have a counterbalancing power in the next government.

We need a new, but capable PM.

Labour is not about to deliver on this. THAT PM MUST COME FROM OUTSIDE OF THE SLP. That is as plain ever to see.

SLP'S POLICY STATEMENT SHOWS THAT the party's leadership can go through the motions of planning, but it CANNOT or has not the capability to THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, YET.

In today's political and social environment, more and more it is becoming plain, that since leaders cannot be expected to know it all, they must be of such character that they will surround themselves with talented, skillful and balanced individuals as their inner circle of advisors. They can come from inside and from outside the Cabinet.

Kenny's sandpaper personality does not allow for this. He is too full of himself.

Yet, even when tested and tried on what should have been his strongest suit, the law, he failed to see the weaknesses of drawing up the agreement on Roachamel. We were committed to $45 million. The money evaporated.

St. Lucia needs a coalition as its next government. But that is if you can look at the situation very soberly.

With a coalition we will be able to reduce the curse of tribalism in both major political parties, have greater fairness in relation to contracts and jobs, and greater oversight over company-to-government financial agreements. This is the blight of leadership that is not comfortable with mathematics.

We can dodge the bullet with a coalition by selecting the best of the best at election time.

The need for consensus will mean that greater attention will be paid to detail, or the support for certain government actions will not be there. Better debates will be needed. MPs will have to be persuaded to vote for or against bills etc.

Factions can join or remove themselves, or reform themselves. The civil service will fill in the gap when we are on auto-pilot between governments.

We will finally be able to temper and curb the powers and the arrogance of those who consider themselves as being God's greatest gift to St. Lucia as PM. Enough foolishness has gone on already!

A Little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially knowledge of self.
It does not take much for me to conclude that there is a bit of schizophrenia in your thinking which makes it difficult for you to admit that a black man (like yourself ?) may have some intellectual prowess to rival that of the 'white man' that you seem to revere.
So Kenny is narcissistic and a bad manager who brought St Lucia to bankruptcy. Really, when did that happen? What bad deals? You mean having the gonads to take risks,( like firing Rick from the senate, LOL) a characteristic that most high achievers posses or forging a public/private partnership to guarantee a loan that has given St Lucians employment (Butch Stuart is laughing all the way to the bank on this one), signing an exploration deal that could bring untold wealth to the country; or the deal to give every St Lucian the opportunity to own a piece of their country; or making sure every St Lucian child, rich or poor, has access to secondary school; or that all St Lucians have access to health care; or that second chances are provided through the NSDC for those who are unemployed, or reducing the level of debt and unemployment that the UWP had left us with... should I go on.
I may not like Kenny, I'm not going to marry the man but let's be fair, honest and balanced. Too many of us sound like those Tea Baggers who hate Obama just because he is Obama!

It is so interesting that none of those bloggers who claim the SLP, and especially Kenny messed up have not been able to refute that the Kenny administration did in fact achieved all that the more objective and truthful bloggers have listed.

So they keep on frothing at the mouth about general and unspecific allegations like "mismanagement" (a catch phrase usually used by those who are desperately clutching at straws)and the like. they keep on attacking the former Prime Minister personally and avoid the issues he speaks to. the issues of jobs, the economy, health care - and especially health care, strategies to stimulate investment by the local business sector and to attract foreign direct investment.

So UNIMAGINATIVE AND DENSE are they that they throw their hands up in the air "things bad every where so how can we attract FDI?". "Kenny just taking us for a ride - where he go get the money?". "Kenny not better than King".

They repeat these banalities in blog after blog hoping to convince THEMSELVES that somehow they are right. Your endless repetition indicates that you have been unable to convince yourselves and there is very little chance that you will convince most of us who are not as blinkered as you.

I don't know know, but i will never believe that it is the poor people of St Lucia that is writing some of what i'm reading on this blog. Poor people who are catching their royals in St Lucia, with a government who created a scandal almost weekly, will never choose to make so much vage comments about the best PM St Lucia ever saw in it history. I believe it is these same UWPs who has made a mess of the country and they have no accomplishments to talk about so they are trying to convince us that Kenny is bad. These UWPs are behaving as if they are in opposition, which is where they truely belong. Kenny made mistakes, stop talking about it we voted you in to fix it as you promised us. You still want to blame Kenny for you making the situation worse. I want these UWPs to tell me what was bad about Grynberg? Ok they say it was a secrete deal we agree, but Kenny said he didn't want to build to much high hopes in us like when King lied to us saying HESS will build an oil refinery in St Lucia. Kenny promise us $100 million jobs deal, they make noise about that, but King copied thatsame idea and offer $300 million with bearly 5 mouths before election, UWP play a blind eye to that, they never where will he get that money. Kenny said he. Would borrow some and get the balance from friendly governments. They are criticizing STEP saying Kenny has no vision for providing jobs to the poor uneducated parents who cannot find jobs else where and at the same time keeping the country clean. What is so wrong about that? They never even mention their UWP with all the ideas they claim to have, who were critizing STEP, copied and implemented the same programe by just changing it name.

I want to ask just one question, can any honest St Lucian explain to me in what condition St Lucia would have been today if Kenny and the SLP didn't spend that 9 yrs in office? We would have been the worse island in the carribbean today after 30 long yrs of UWP rule. We didn't have enought primary or secondary schools for our youth, we were on a shift system, which is unheard in the caribbean. We did not have proper hospitals to care for our sick. We did not have proper roads for our motorist to ply on. We didn't have a proper place to dispose our gabbage. Our prison, police stations, our fire stations were all like pig pens. We didn't nearly have enought hotels for our guest and to provide employment. We didn't have one international sporting ground. Unemployment was sky high etc, etc, etc. Kenny and the SLP had to clean all that mess and more. So why Kenny should not be given another chance to cotinue developing the country?
