As a student of the Sir Arthur Lewis community college, I completely agree with this article, the length of the skirts up here is degrading and outrageous, I think it is a 'shortest skirt' competition in truth and in fact and that proper regulations should be put in place to cease these young women from this practice.

???? This article is a waste of thought! Also highlights the colonial values we still practice...sorry I meant the plantation values.

If the young lady decides to dye her hair orange, red or whatever she chooses its up to her as long as she is doing her school work, that could ultimately help with Lucia's development. If her clothing would indicate respect and education I guess Lucia would be in a better economic situation since the leaders reflect that dress code of respect spoken about.

The means of punishments/chastisements that were made by the folks on the bus are also colonial plantation punishment...let’s try to free ourselves from those values to grow. The 'developed' countries that produce respectable scholars/artistes etc. tend not to focus on clothing rather the productivity of individuals....clothing don’t indicate intelligence...

The opinion page did not condemn the child's manner of dress. Apparently she was following the stipulated dress code. The op. page's consternation is of the child's hairstyle. I think that being a member of a uniformed group the student simply wants to express her individuality by coloring her hair. Who knows? There goes Saint Lucia's next Nobel Prize winner!!

Maybe it's time to do away with these stupid uniforms.
Uniforms don't make students any smarter.
The country, and the only country, that put man on the moon does not have a uniform code.

I completely agree with the article. I have lamented this sort of behaviour for a long time now. Many young ladies lack respect for themselves and it shows by the way they come up to school at the College. I remember my days of going to school at SALCC when guys were required to put their shirts in their pants and girls dress like we were going to work, black and white. Ultimately that is what you are being prepared for, so it is obvious that you should start practicing looking the part. By the way, I left SALCC in 1995.
I think that management of the school need to give this attention and ensure that the uniform is worn as such. I do not think that our people are prepared for the wearing of casual clothing to come to school. Then is would be a crying shame the sort of wardrobes that we would have to be putting up with. Already they are making a mockery of what is supposed to be a uniform, far less.

I highly agree with this article...Girls nowadays at SALCC care less of themsleves and in wearing such short skirts show no self respect. As a guy, I seriously believe that the dress code should be reviewed and adjustments should be made when it pertains to uniform and to a certain extent the hair, as it stains the school with a bad impression!!

I certainly agree with the person who wrote this article...Girls tend to wear short skirts showing that they have no self respect. i believe that the dress code should be reviewed and adjustments should be made as it pertains to uniform and to some extent the hair styles as it gives other s a negative or bad impression of the school.

bloggers 2 & 4 are obviously on a downward discipline spiral.

A uniform denotes a sense of pride, discipline and respect.

I attended three schools (primary, secondary and college) where a uniform was required. At the time, I felt good to "represent" my school.

In the corporate and public sectors - uniforms are also required for identification. If society had to do away with uniforms, we would not know a policeman from an airline attendant!!

To the present issue at hand, if the SALCC does not see it fit to address (not pun intended) their students manner of dress for a place of learning, then, they too are at fault for encouraging this type of "lawlessness" (yes it is!).

Image ... is EVERYTHING!! You dress like a slut to attend school, then you will be labelled as one!!

Not so in MY school.

We need to stop judging other and look at our own lives, so what with her hair, gold and black hair; if she wasn't a student would that pose an issue? when exactly do you expect her to express herself, the school normally sends students on job training, at that time she would be required to tone down the colour, and if she decides to remain in the working world when again will she be entitled to do such things. People back in the day had there way of expressing them selves the wrote songs and poems and whatever else the did, and you have to admit they had their own share of rule breaking. I despise people who judge the youth as if they were and are still perfect. I do however have a problem with the extremely short skirts worn by some of the girls at the school, and i agree with other bloggers when they say that the authority should look into the matter. I also believe that such statements like what was said by the other passengers is what ignites the flames of deviance from young ones.

As a year one student attending sir arthur i am 50/50 for and against this article. I believe students should express themselves through coloured accessories as part of the uniform. it adds individuality and interest in the uniform. However i am for this article to a certain extent some of the children attending the school overdo their dressing. by limiting the whole school because of the others who choose to dress inappropriately is unfair.

I think that students should have the right to express themselves but some students take it too far.like come on,the skirts are too short, too many accessories and your hair should not be a distraction to others.Take pride in your school uniform.First impression is everything so make sure that your first impression is a great lasting impression.

I don't really have a problem with the hair colour, the girl just needs to understand that if she desires to work in her near future that she will have to tone down on the colour. Personal I believe that the short skirt is an issue that should be looked into because I don't support it at all but I am not saying that girls should have too long of a skirt. it should be a reasonable length and not "right up to your butt". Also the some of the comments which were made are ridiculous. I'm sure when you where the child's age you did something that society would deem as 'disrepectful' or wrong. But that didn't stop you from doing it right? It is only as we mature that we are able to see that some of the ways in which we live our lives are not appropriate and then we try to change.the saying goes 'with great power comes great responsibility' but i also believe that with maturity and age your mindset begins to change.
And I can never understand why people are so quick to judge others. I'm sure if it were their child they would be singing a different tune.

This article speaks of people forming perceptions about the school by watching the way the students dress but truthfully students have been expressing themselves through colour and fashion for years and it has never been a big issue, if it becomes an issue and people start to look down on the school because of student's creativity we can all blame it on the person who wrote this article. Leaving in a country were art isn't high on the agenda but students are gifted in the form of art i believe they should express their creativity how ever they want. Me putting half of my hair in red, gold, green or purple doesn't make me anything less than those with their hair in all black. We all have art in us and some of us hang under the tree during our free hours and free style, others dance, sum make beats, others draw, others play sports, others write poems and the list goes on but we have no institution to help us express all that talent. Sum no how to make colour combinations wen we dress and thats also a way of expressing our artistic side so people who are small minded will think we're delinquents but our gold hair doesn't change an A+ student into a D- student. We need people to stop discriminating and accept that although u might not do sumthing, to others its a way of being urself.

I love this article, so true. Women do not understand those words anymore self-worth, pride, dignity, value etc. It is no wonder why men disrespect them so much. Enforce the rules. People need to understand that they are coming to school, stop seeking attention. As a woman i feel embarrassed for these young ladies. I guess we are now understanding the reasons why this cyle should be broken. You cannot judge a nation by the number of people in it, we judge it by its leader. We have gone so low that is the reason why they are now asking to legalize prostitution. Cry aloud my lady. Protest it too.

In my department some lectruers are trying their best to try and correct these minisbut to no avail. these are the very same people who will pollute the school, workforce etc. As a student of SLACC i am pretty much disgusted at some of the comments that was made. What has happend to MR DISCIPLINE. Act like educated and sensible people. I know for a fact that our parents work hard to discipline us, SLACC is trying their best to prepare us for the world of work. When something is wrong, it can be the pope, the king on the throne, the pastor, the dean, IT IS WRONG. I dot care who it is. So stop talking about if it was your children etc. I blame some parents too. Double check the uniforms of your children. You are the ones providing. Some parents need to understand and know their duties.I dare not live my parents house like dat, if i tried in the twinkling of an eye the outfit would be torn. Ladies God has placed a high price and value on us lets claim it.
