Shame the new tourism is driving down arrivals...

Good luck with the East Coast initiative, it's a rugged and beautiful place!

didnt i hear that dennery village will be getting 15 million ECD.. from the European funds to advance their village ? isnt that the initiatives that they are currently pushing ..? and i hope that with the crisis in europe perhaps that money could be disbursed in a couple yrs from now or luck might have it that they ve already got it in the bag .. dennery can do alot with 15big ones..

Soufriere should actually be the first place to be needing major town redevelopment and renewal it also has the greatest potential its a special place even while walking in its flat terrain ... when will our govs wake up and turn soufriere into a town like no other in the caribbean... it already attracts 200,000 tourists the same i have heard visit rodney bay .. its like night and day between these 2 areas of stlucia ... FOOD4THOUGHT..

"when will our govs wake up and turn soufriere into a town like no other in the caribbean"

Chastanet was going to do this but Soufriere chose Dalson... Lucia is nervous about outside money but it is necessary for the economy.

The future doesn't look bright with Theophilus & Dalson. Who are they to negotiate with Carnival, AA & others? Rank amateurs... Better leave it to the hoteliers and the private sector.

workinprogress said...

@anonymous
are you saying that they are rank amateurs because they might have a bit more melanin in their skin?? Have you been in negotiations with them? Have you even met them for long enough to relegate them to the dark hole of "rank amateur"?

I see Chastanet is still your demi-God. Too bad for you that the people of Soufriere chose to get rid of that man and stick with someone who actually cared about them and not the exploitation of their home.

OK workinprogress, great arguments there, the "racism" card!

What about tour operators in New York declining to promote St Lucia due to the issue that shall not be mentioned concerning the new Minister of Tourism? That has more to do with behavior than skin color...

And what international business experience does Dalson have to qualify him to exchange with Fortune 500 corporations? And what progress has he made in Soufriere? It seems to be getting worse, not better, and since the Labour government arrived, work on Hummingbird has ground to a halt.

Market forces dictate that negotiating with big business is a necessary step to economic prosperity for a small island like St Lucia.

Mr Dalson and maybe even UWP turncoat Lorne may indeed "care about" the people of Soufriere, but this is scant qualification to pull the town out of poverty.

Please share how these men are qualified, and concrete actions they have taken to attract tourists from the UK and North America before you assume to accuse me of racism.

workinprogress said...

Where is your proof about these tour operators refusing to do business here. Bring me the evidence.

You can go have a look for yourself at the the credentials of the two persons in question. I think you will be surprised to know that they don't have that "mud between their toes" that you think they do.

I never called you a racist mind you. I asked you a question. There is a huge difference there. It is actually quite simple minded of you to think that Chastanet singlehandedly managed tourism. It's actually a team effort believe it or not. both Lorne and dalson are quite skilled at negotiating. I guess you are more accustomed to chastanet's bluffing.

How long have they been in office for you to be asking me about their "concrete actions" I'm sure you can count.

workinprogress......You are a very disturb man,Chastanet had it all planed out for Soufriere but no you all voted for a sick man that's already on death row fighting hard to prove that he's fit for the job.You talk about exploitation hope you'll be around to see who's exploiting who.You my friend is a vile creature of the lowest form.

Chastaet was so good, how much time does he need to put his plans for Soufriere into action? We paid him our hard earned tax dollars for a full term of 5 yrs as minister of tourism. So he needed another 5 yrs just to start? To late the people of Soufriere would have time stave. He need 10 yrs to do something good for Soufriere, but he only needed a few days in office to do wickedness to the people of Soufriere by deprieving and firing the poor tour guides of their jobs. Then he has the guts to ask the people of Soufriere for a job.

The person who is playing God by saying Dalson is on death row, nobody know whey they will die becareful you don't die before Dalson. Death is not in your hands, only the most high control these things.

you are describing someone as "a sick man on death row" and then have the nerve to call me " a vile creature of the lowest form". LOL you make me giggle like a schoolgirl. Go with God!

I don't know who @anonymous has spoken with in NY but I do know that my cousin who works at Libery Travel in NY says that she is discouraging St Lucia since Grande Anse and that when you Google 'Lorne Theophilus' there are disturbing links ON THE FIRST PAGE. STA travel in the UK, a student focused agency, also has employees aware of this and who discuss it with clients. This doesn't effect the Sandals crowd so much, but is an issue for independent travelers.

The choice between St Lucia & elsewhere is a subtle one and this is an important factor.

Happily there is a talented team and Louis Lewis is still around - you are right in this respect Mr Workinprogress.

I have never met Dalson but have seen some of his speeches and he doesn't speak elegantly. Has he been to university? You are right though that he may be a good negotiator even if a poor communicator.

I think that we can all agree that whatever party you prefer, St Lucia needs all of the cards on her side. Skilled men with impeccable reputations.

Please join me in wishing the Labour government success, the island needs it.

JULIE MANGO

PS: Mr Workinprogress when you ask somebody if their issue is 'melanin', you are implying that they are racist. Let's stick to things we would say face to face in polite company, thereby showing our class.

workinprogress said...

no Julie Mango. When I ask somebody a question, I ask them a question. If I ask you about melanin in someone's skin I am asking you about melanin How you choose to interpret that is your business. I know what I ASKED. point blank period. I would also ask this person that face to face. I don't cower away from the issues.
Now Julie mango if you did your research, you would know that Mr. Dalson does hold more than a bachelor's degree. So yes dear he has been to university. Look it up. Don't forget this is not the UWP we are talking about. It baffles me that people all of a sudden want to make an issue out of someone having a university degree now when the last administration was filled with a bunch of idiots who probably could not even spell the word "university" much less know what the inside of one looked like. Just because someone does not speak "elegantly" does not mean they are not able to do the job. Your boy chastanet was quite the elegant talker but we all know very well that man is as empty as they come. Good Day

Hello @workinprogress

You are absolutely correct - I took a look and Mr Dalson does indeed have a degree! I wish him, and his Labour colleagues every success.

I didn't mention Mr Chastanet (or the UWP), in my post and only moved to the island 6 weeks ago. As such I can't comment on Mr Theophilus' predecessor and can ensure you that he is in no way my 'boy'.

Now that the 'melanin' issue is resolved, I would be interested to hear what you think of the ongoing 'rape discussion'? This whole affair is quite shocking to me.

I spent the last 20 years between Canada, Great Britain and Germany where scandals such as these don't exist in the political arena (although there are other scandals!).

Is this 'politics as usual' for St Lucia? Do you think it is harmful to the island's reputation? If they display false information, why are St Lucia's lawyers unable to get these sites brought down?

Headlines in local press and websites are read in source markets. Web agencies exist to 'clean up' internet reputations. A call to such an establishment would be useful, don't you agree?

Wishing you a fine Sunday.

[i suspect working progress is a woman why bloggers think u are guy..lol] i am happy many are & have seen the light about allen chasten. I look at barbados, st.kitts, antigua they've all have had hotel developments in the last 5 yrs.Keep in mind these are years of GLOBAL RECESSION HUH..

The uwp gov as Chastn with his socalled negotiating skills couldnt attract NOT ONE medium or small resort.. Hotel Chocolate only has 6 rooms in their offering, that doesnt qualify for a medium hotel.. so only 6 rooms in 5 yrs... with a bunch of slp initiatives completed by uwp.. and SOUFRIERE never got any worthwhile improvement..well if MICOUD didnt how the hell soufriere will under that large mouth piece of allen chastenant.

give him his strong points which are-- he is a good orator and perhaps negotiator and he perhaps contributed alot to airlift .. THATS it.. NOTHING ELSE is worth commending CHastenant on .. NOTHING..

if he was all that brilliant certainly with all his yrs in the aviation & hospitality industries i would think he would have really saved soufriere the place he all of a sudden found to be a gem in the wilderness..he was a big disappointment in my view. and i once thought he shined head and shoulder over philip j.Pierre I TAKE THAT BACK..NOW

@ Better Days

Are you aware that St Lucia's hotels are empty most of the year? Would you invest your money in a hotel here?

I wouldn't!

This doesn't justify a lack of completed projects over Chastanet's reign in charge of tourism, but it does explain focus on airlift.

We can all agree that there is an issue with tourism... Arrivals aren't going up, visitors aren't spending, new businesses aren't being created.

I hope that Kenny focuses on attracting foreign investors. Reducing theft and hold-ups at customs, making St Lucia business friendly.

It makes me smile when I see that somehow the UWP got St Lucia to be the World Bank's easiest place of business in the Caribbean.

That's crazy! Theft at customs, incentives which take years to approve then aren't honored, a bank system which doesn't loan money.

St Lucia business friendly? I don't think so!

@anonymous. Welcome to Saint Lucia! I hope you have a good and productive time here.

I must admit that I giggled at the site of you being shocked at soem of the things you have heard and seen. I think there is more to come and it would be interesting to see any changes in how you process life in St. lucia after a good ole lucian immersion.
A word of advice for you. There has been a disturbing trend recently of people attempting to tarnish people's character and reputation in online forums and particularly on facebook. Be careful with the things that you read on there and elsewhere and take it with a grain of salt. Many of the allegations on there have been shown to be false and the actions of mischievous persons bent on destroying others due to political affiliation

I don't want to be long winded with my post but with regard to these rape allegations. I want you to find out for yourself whether anyone was charged, imprisoned and what became of the cases. You would be surprised. Don't be too quick to take everything at face value and ignore that most things here are rooted in politics. Let me know when you do then I can give you my thoughts

well said last blogger. Who don't like it can take it to the banks.

The EU project/initiative in Dennery Village to improve economic activity has turned into a "tiye meter between on behalf of Chastanet and Dalson asb rep for Soufriere". We never stop being myopic and political!

Great initiative for Dennery and I look forward to the other villages getting a similar boost. However, I am a lover of roe (fish egg)and the cost ($30.00) of getting a double at the Dennery Fish Fiesta on Saturdays is prohibitive!

If the activity is to grow and attract patrons, it must therefore remain competitive!
