well this contribution by MR M.CHASTANET is well documented in prior radio talk shows... but why are we limiting the topic of medians to only the sandals halcyon -- choc roundabout road.. we need to know when the gov will continue with the 4lane roadway from choc to gros islet town junction... SADLY there may be a few more deaths in the near future if we dont act quickly by means of loan financing to complete this roadway... I AM hearing MP Phillip Pierre Speaking of a new link road from gros islet to dennery.. passing either beneath the barre d'illise or around it..

I was disappointed MR.PIERRE contribution on "HOT BUTTON ISSUE" he could have just told everyone he cannot say much until the budget instead of acting like he knows very little outside the median controversy although his ministry is on top of that problem which is a good thing BUT what about the rest of the gros-islet highway.. we need immediate monies poured into that project.. i believe DIWI consultants has done prelimenary designs for that road network already and if there adjustments has to be made it shouldnt take time to modify their plans... i know slp are fans of DIWI so most likely if DIWI is still around they will get the consulting job once more.. WE NEED A GROS ISLET 4 LANE HIGHWAY road in 2 yrs from now tops..OR SADLY MORE ROADWAY DEATHS ARE COMING .. and MORE CONGESTION as well

I doubt much bloggers will contribute to this one here but let me add another point ...

we need cameras to be posted from vigie roundabout to choc roundabout to ward off culprits who drive over the speed limit and change lanes want wantonly..slp need to buy these special police vehicles as they stipulated in their manifesto to introduce traffic police .. esp on the whole gros islet road network esp late and early mornings of the weekend limes up north.. to ward off drunks and loose driving.. THAT IS A GOOD START TO CURB THE ACCIDENTS CRISIS we experience up north monthly quarterly sometimes

Why can't they put caution reflection tape on them?

I believe that we're missing the vitals here. Never mind the infrastructure, lets get cops on roads to ensure that the traffic laws are not being violated. Drink driving is a major cause of most of these accidents. No, the roads are not ideal, but until drivers are prosecuted for driving drunk, then woe be unto us. Many more will die. Most people that we know, see no issue with 'sending up their pressure' then getting behind the wheel. This is where we MUST start.

If the car and driving has become such a major problem - high gas prices, pollution, congestions, monthly and weekly deaths; I'll have to conclude that the horse & buggy, though slower, was by far superior.

It seems that for every step forward, we take two backward; and we call it progress.

Some idiot decides to drive around a corner, on a narrow road that he must have been aware has a badly designed barrier at 100 mph. He crashes into the barrier, dies and now there is an outrage. My opinion is that it's his fault. Other idiots cross two lanes of traffic, stand on the barrier waiting to cross another two lanes of traffic when they are below a foot bridge placed there that they can safely cross. When one of those idiots gets hit by a bus/car/truck and dies I guess more outrage. My opinion, it will be their fault. Many stray dogs in Castries, in fact all over. Littering, defacating, no outrage. When one of those stray dogs bites a tourist (not a local) there will be outrage. Go figure.

How many people actually know how to use a two lane highway, and what the lanes are for? This highway is built too narrow, no margin of error has been allowed for, and what crazy person put crossings so near the entrances of the roads. If the money was there the whole project needs a total rethink. Furthermore St Lucia must have the worst driviers in the world. I see cops about the place passing these dangerous individuals who can't seem to drive properly and rarely see the cops pull these people over. Of course they are busy, the cops that is, flirting with woman/men to be doing their jobs as law enforcers. Recently I witnessed a motorbike cop on duty at the side of the road with women sitting on his bike, no regard given to the road users and traffic offences. There is no discipline or adherence to rules unless of course it in their interests. Someone recently said to me that St. Lucia is the 'freeest' place in the world, when asked what they meant they replied 'you can do what ever you like here and no one cares, all the rules and laws can be broken with no consequence', my point is made!!!

In my humble opinion, all this talk, critisisms and comments are useless unless our drivers start behaving and driving more responsibly on our roads.

I don't have the statistics but am almost certain that the majority of deaths occuring on our highways, especially that section of the road in question, has been as a result of eccessive speeding.

We can talk until "thy kingdom come" and spend as much of our resources as possible on remidial actions but these will all be in vain until our drivers adopt a more positive and responsible attitude to driving on our roads.

The Traffic department needs to start charging those culprits and publish such information as a means of deterrant for other offenders.
