Is VAT The Christmas Cheer?

I dont think the supermarket I shop at understands VAT.
A simple example. A meat pattie was $4.50 Since VAT it is $5.18 I then pay 15% on that at the checkout. That is a 30% increase. There are other instances of this as well.
This is not correct and is happening because they dont understand that they only have to remit the difference of the VAT charged.
Sadly we are paying for the few months till they get to understand.
Christmas 2012 is going to be very difficult for everyone.

I eat both but was the example of 30% I was pointing out. Local produce has no VAT.
