It would be so much easier and cheaper to systematically begin to replace the rot in the educational system with technology or IT.

Computers and dishes do not complain. They do not call in sick. They do not look forward to raises without merit.

They in fact level the playing field allowing the best teachers to be paid extra for the broadcasting or rebroadcasting of their taught lessons and "in real time" to hard-to-reach, and far-flung areas of the country.

More rapid pupil and student assessments can be made and evaluations be used to channel certain pupils/students (from pre-K upwards) in streams where there are national development and training skill gaps, each according to need, personal characteristics and aptitude.

Retire the rot who are only in it for the long vacations and the paycheck. It is time to bring in pay for performance, or performance related pay, and for cabinet ministers too!

Not only should the Unions NEVER be given an increase they should have never been given the increase the first time around under the UWP. In fact the civil service should be trimmed by at least 25%.

But the point is: Was it not the same Kenny Anthnoy saying the UWP HAD to give the increases "or else". He even marched for the increase and aisaid the UWP could pay.
Was it not the same Kenny Anthony who said Better Days are around the corner in spite of his historically abysmal record.

Did he not say VAT was such a horrible imposition on St. Lucians ?

Was it not Kenny Anthony who said during elections that tourism was about to turn around or at least in 16 months with him at the helm.
Was it not kenny Anthnoy who increased debt by over 2 billion.

Plus some of that debt you mentioned Micah was left over from the SLP of 1997 -2006.

In other words it is all words and he cannot govern.
Lies, statistics and mor promise characterizes this scamp.

Freeze hiring of teachers. Replace the worst with computers and computer-mediated technology. Modernize the teaching service on a grand scale.

Fire the lot of lazy teachers. Let pass a recertification bar exam like doctors have to keep them relevant and up to date.

Your article is very biased. You've made a lousy attempt at trying to create an impression of being neither here nor there but it is very clear whose side you're on. THE GOVERNMENT'S AND THAT'S NOT A VERY GOOD QUALITY FOR ANY JOURNALIST.

and to all these uneducated and ill informed fools making all these nasty comments about teachers being replaced with technology , i want to invite all of you to place a fucking robot in a classroom with 30 or more students and see what happens to them. And stop bashing teachers . We are not the only ones involved in this right now.

You are a teacher and that is how you started a sentence. I wouldn't want you to teach my kid. I am an illiterate but I would be able to do a better job than you. You all teachers are too dam greedy.

I guess you can programme the computer not to be so-o-o-o-o-o dumb as to put out a writing sample like that above @5:04 AM.

In a job interview that required writing as part of the job duties, that writer would not even get a courtesy of a notice that the position has been filled. That one is clearly a reject!

Having experienced online and ITV classes, I can honestly say that nothing trumps face-to-face human interaction. Whilst robots would be easier to manipulate and regulate, I doubt they would be able to answer every single question in the manner it's posed. Consider the implications.

We can say for example record the lessons of the best mathematics teachers and ensure that for certain groups they are exposed to the best that there is on the island. Even the most remote of school locations on the island can benefit from such instruction, using streaming video. It is time to do away with mediocrity in teaching. Stop suffering the poor kids with foolish half-baked teachers.

I'm laughing at these comments related to replacing teachers with robots. Do you really believe that students will sit and quietly listen attentively to a recording?

How will recording or robot deal with questions and give individual attention students need? Who will correct books, inspire individuality, nurture creativity?

You people have forgotten what it was like being in a classroom where there are individuals not many students sharing one brain one thought.
We teachers encourage students to be different to be individuals. I am a damn good teacher and NO type of technology can replace me or what I do and have successfully done over the past 20 years.

In our case technology improves not replaces. To the brilliant mind who suggested recertification, don't be a jackass. The professions are obviously quite different.

So you expect that teachers being taught say for example, how to teach simultaneous equations as the requirement for certification should be good enough to meet the demands of the future employers of the students being taught in our system? What about IT?

I heard of a story where a teacher after gaining a degree in Economics shut the books and went on to teach students years on end, theories that had been debunked for years!

Do you know what was the effect of this on student performance? The students continued to fail their exams.

If you are in the knowledge business, you must remain up-to-date and be on the cutting edge to give your charges a competitive advantage.

Lazy teachers do not want to bother their heads to learn anything new. They become just as duncy as their charges.

I agree that technology can be used to enhance teaching methods, not altogether replace teachers. I gained a lot from supplementing in-class study with Emerson's online quizzes and even YouTube videos from renowned instructors.

Let's not forget, though, that the proposed technological equipment (cameras, monitors, projectors etc) requires a secure environment. Our idea of school security has always been the elderly watchman who is no match for today's thugs. So in addition to the cost of acquiring this equipment (we may want to seek donations from the Chinese or Taiwanese), we also have to factor in security costs.

Oh my golly gosh.
The cost of living has gone up. The Service is looking for a raise.
It was expected and should be paid.
Who raised the cost of living ? Who has to pay the bills ?

Micah, boy, this is theatre. Yes, man, it's political theatrics a la Kenny and his boys. Saint Lucians are being manipulated once more. We will continue to feel where it hurts most!!

Civil cervants should should be not so selfish, they have:
-a secure job
-receiving different allowances
-get paid when "called sick out and strike"
-working less hours then normal citizens
-with productivity at lowest level
-complaining how a teacher surviving when he retiring at age 60 til the age 67 when he receive retirement. (how do the normal stizen have to survive?)

...I'm sick of this CS who like to be a PARALLEL SOCIETY with extraordinary demands.
CUT THEYR SALARY BY 50% OR SEND HALF OF THEM HOME, THEN THE WILL EXPERIENCE HOW LIFE IS FOR A NORMAL PERSON!!!

St Lucia seems to be operating like New York these days. I recall when I lived there guys with Phds used to drive taxi cabs to make xtra cash. Here in SL I observe guys and gals with Masters and Bachelors clerking on construction projects instead of the government placing them in more creative positions.

The civil servants are clamoring for more pay; the PM promised 0, 0, 0 and in the end gives them 4%. It seems that the flagellas are leading the head. When it comes to serving the masses the PM has to be more careful with his political rhetoric; he forgot he is the top servant of the civil servants. Perhaps he should have been honest and tell the pubic servants that there is no money in the coffers but he would engage his top financial advisors to come up with ways and means of generating much needed revenue so that perhaps an increase in pay would be possible.

Instead of focusing on borrowing funds the PM coud be more inward-looking--focusing on how we could develop our own resources to generate revenue/capital, investments, and employment.

Consider the following scenarios:
GFL Charles airport seems to be getting quieter and quieter these days; it is about time a decision is made here. Al these lands could be sold to investors for all sorts of developments that would benefit the nation. A small portion of the ariport can still be used for helicopters and VTOL (vertical take off and landing) aircraft. We need space to expand Castries.

Have we forgotten Roseau and Cul de sac bays, Soufriere and Vieux Fort? all these bays have potential for Seaplane terminals.

Revenue, Revenue... we can collect even without major projects. Let us start placing order on our roads by ticketing reckless drivers and those without insurance. Many drivers park on bends to chat. Loud noise and littering has become the order of the day. Increase fines in other areas where our laws are violated.

We have brains on this island but if they reamin idle like unused machines they could act like fictional robots without masters.

Put our professionals, the youth and all workers back to work.
