Common sense shows that it is almost impossible for the level of poverty to have fallen to the levels described by this obviously skewered report recently presented to the world.
In fact if it is true it has to be an indictement on Administrations from as far back as 1995 since we cannot assume this took place only within the past two years.

That's the biggest lie ever, St.Lucia is better than that.

That's why I said, be afraid , be very afraid of the Americans. They are the master of propaganda, They can make or break a country. St.Lucia is making alot of buzz lately and they are out to keep her down.
For the longest while it was hands-off cuz the UK gave Canada more say with the former colonies to offset American influence but they're making inroads now.

Down with those yanks.

The actual report from Population Reference Bureau
http://prb.org/pdf09/09wpds_eng.pdf

Very few English-speaking countries were studied for the US$2 stat. These included Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and St. Lucia. St. Lucia was the only Eastern Caribbean country studied.

St. Lucia with 41% and Trinidad at 14% have surprisingly high figures for the US$2 stat given their per-capita income.

Guyana at 17% and Jamaica at 6% with lower per capita have much lower figures for the US$2 stat.

St. Lucia's per capita income at $9,190 is more than 3 times that of Guyana at $2,510 and yet Guyana has much fewer people living on US$2/day. There would have to be much higher levels of income inequality in St. Lucia compared to other Caribbean countries for this be accurate.

I wonder if has to do with the currency differences since both Jamaica and Guyana have their currency floated and has fallen significantly in the past 15 years, while the EC$ is fixed to the US and has not changed at all in the past 15 years. Though the Trinidad$ is floating their central bank has basically maintained the same conversion rate to the US$.

They're out to get St.Lucia. Some people say that the H1N1 virus was placed in Mexico to prevent tourists from visiting so the money can stay in America.

i guess the interview the workers at S&S and concluded there report based on there finding there. None the less someone have to consider the restaurant up north of the island and the way to paint lucia to the tourist. The pay these ppl penny to work wired hours.. but this whole finding is baseless!

There is no doubt about it the cost of food, basic living costs in this country are higher than the UK, and the average daily wage is considerably lower than the uk so there has to be some basis in this report as the other facts are true.

That info can't be right at all, impossible.

Who cares, who says if Lucians live on less than US$2. The fact is we Lucians are in a crisis with a government that is causing hell in the island. If they continue, we might one day live on less than $2 for true.

Anonymous said...

that is a shame. what does say about the government.

The info isn't right, but here we go blaming the Gvoernment. St. Lucians everything is politics for you'll. Jeez man learn to think too nuh.

More than what meets the eye. Based on metrics i.e. salary and having a job the statistics does have some merit. I will not be hypocritical and neglect to recognize the fact that the drug trade is a source of income for many unemployed and even some legally employed individuals as well. St Lucia is not in the state of poverty where there is a vast number of kids hungry, sick and dying. What I would comment on however is the uncertainty of whether farmer, fishermen and other self employed individuals were taken into consideration.

one general rule of thumb to follow:America is a self serving nation in the throes of a global leadership defeat.Dont listen to its informations.Listen to your own heart.that's wisdom
our own history is evidence enough dat we mus treat these people with a total no listen approach

Tell the Americans to butt out of the Commonwealth Realm, they have no bloody say whatsoever.

I am a St.Lucian residing in the USA and the sheer magnitude of the grammatical errors and spellings I read in the comments is astounding.St.Lucians are well off when it comes to food in their stomachs and a place to sleep but I urge you to please end the educational poverty. After all the world is reading your comments. The least you can do is to write it properly.

I think we're missing the point. While 41% shocks us and seems unfathomable, what percentage are we willing to accept? The 28% reported by the Statistics department? Are we saying that it is acceptable that more than 1 in every 4 people in St.Lucia is living in poverty? We need to stop blaming a report to making ourselves feel better, and deal with the poverty situation in St.Lucia, whether it affects 41% of the population, or 28%, or somewhere in between.

"stlucia per cap is not 9,190 but 5,530 look it up your self under stlucia's profile pls."

The $9,190 figure was obtain from the report which had the 41% figure in the column "GNI PPP
per Capita (US$) 2008"

http://prb.org/pdf09/09wpds_eng.pdf

UNICEF does in fact have $5,530 as the "GNI per capita (US$), 2007" for St. Lucia.

http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/stlucia_statistics.html

Corresponding figures for the other Caribbean islands using UNICEF.
Guyana - 1300
Jamaica - 3710
St. Lucia - 5530
Trinidad - 14100

So St. Lucia's per-capita income is still significantly higher than Guyana and Jamaica though the percentage living on less than $2US per day is much higher in St. Lucia.

From wikipedia:

This purchasing power SEM rate equalizes the purchasing power of different currencies in their home countries for a given basket of goods. Using a PPP basis is arguably more useful when comparing differences in living standards on the whole between nations because PPP takes into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of different countries, rather than just a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) comparison

It's nice to see so many comments but disappointing to see no-one put their name to their comments. Is it that people in St. Lucia still feel so worried about consequences of speaking up? If so, that's a next kind of poverty!

The report used a method that is apparently outdated - say you can buy a t-shirt for US$2 in the US, a t-shirt in St. Lucia would cost EC$15, so they work out what money you need in St. Lucia to buy the same things a person in the US could buy for $2.

Whatever inaccuracies, at least it made people sit up and look at the reality - St. Lucia has a lot of apparent wealth and a lot of real poverty, whatever party is in power. Both should be doing better in my opinion.

Understood Finola but we all live in St. Lucia. when I see a fisherman landing 150 lbs of fish selling at $6- $8/lb you cannot tell me he is part of the 41% earning less than EC$5.30/day. After all a lot of us see fishermen as some of the lowest paid in St. Lucia. US$2/dy works out at EC$159.00/mth which is at least 50% below the lowest wage I have heard paid in our country.

I understand the disparity in the levels of income but there are many varied reasons for that and as someone else pointed out "a lie it a lie".
This lie could even affect our tourism as a potential tourist for the 2009/10 Winter Season coming across this report might be adverse to visiting St. Lucia not wanting to be faced with this supposed abject poverty. So we need to stick to the point and this clear issue of a biased report. This also is not an indicment on any one Administration but on all over the past 15 years if it were true, so should be looked by all the political players in St. Lucia.
