Oh wow! Interesting how we fail to see the gems in our backyard. I have never looked at the market more than as a place to buy produce.

i know i come across as a critique most times.. but i feel i have to put my 2cents into it...

i TOTALLY DISAGREE with this report that castries [craft] market is ranked 3rd.. if we were to examine very close by islands like antigua and st vincent they have indoor markets. ours is partly inside/outside esp with the food vending with those broken down wooden paintless trays that they pack aside every evening... the market is partly on a bus terminal spot..
I can never think that our markets out rank and out shine those in developed / other developing countries with huge market squares, plastic casing vending boths or trays neatly packed with fruits and all kinds of food and fish items & flowers, nuts, organic ground provisions . i could add more ..does castries market comprise of all these things, where are the proper facilities to move in and out of its congested small spaces it has right now.. I think the rank of 3rd is a travesty of what the real market concept is really like..
NB.. i believe Castries market has lots of potential esp the jeremie street area. We can make our market #1 with a little investment..

Betta Dazs, you are comparing the Castries Market to the couple of other markets you know; but these people are comparing it to the thousands of other markets from around the world; and they say it is 3rd.
Now, why can't you accept that?

Betta Days I will pardon your ignorance and i will also implore you to think before you speak. In this small island of stlucia it seem to me that our mouth hinges are faster than our brains hence making us look like idiots. First and foremost u need to find out the bench mark that was used to grade the market. Furthermore if you had been to any of those markets mentioned above, you would have gain appreciation for what we have in stlucia. Well done richard fredrick.

Having travelled to a lot of other countries I am shocked by this revelation. The prices are over the top, e.g. selling hot pepper 6$ more than the supermarkets, attitudes, stupid loud mouth mentallities, using the one brain cell doesn't make their customer service anything to brag about. I wish they had published the criteria. Wouldn't surprise me if RF hasn't screwed a judge.

This is simply nonsense! This is fake - a lie! Like the last blogger, I too have been all round the world and as much as I would like this to be true for St Lucia's sake, it's just not true. Maybe someone played with some words, for example: maybe our market is among the 3rd-class-rated markets of the world.

In addition, of course it all depends on the criterion within our market has been rated. But please St Lucia tourist board, don't market our Castries market as the 3rd best in the world because this faux pas will make us the laughingstock of the entire Caribbean if not of the world.

"3RD BEST WORLDWIDE"
Something is wrong with this. What?

Did the judges visit or include any of the many bazaars throughout North Africa and the Middle East? WOW!! Now, these are some really extraordinary markets - even the Montreal market does not compare with any of these grand bazaars.

This is clearly down to the hard work of the nation's hero and visionary, Richard Frederick.

Under his steady leadership, Castries has become the envy of the Caribbean, and soon it shall be for the world.

Bravo Richard for your work on Castries market, recognized now indisputably by this tremendous and impartial prize!

If Kenny has any honour he will stand back and let you govern this fair island.

St Lucia deserves your leadership Richard. Rise up like a Phoenix, seize the day, allow us all to jump into your shiny Range Rover!

Pretty soon there will be a prize for the country with the most MORONS and i bet you stlucia will top the list....

i am happy by the majority of responses above THAT GOOD SENSE PREVAILS here .. its not about being patriotic and speaking of patriotic- "I AM NOT" .. but i want to see stlucia be the TOP leading OECS island for now i hand that over to antigua with stlucia a close 2nd.. instead of focusing on delusional best markets of the world which i am more than certain that the best of the best markets are not what is posted on this newspaper... I AM CERTAIN as some my other LEARN-ED & Experienced travellers have pointed out ..CASE CLOSED..

i truly want the best for our fair helen st lucia, and i want us to improve significantly on our infastructure and trasportation, medical, esp commercial and fun activities we are lacking for idle kids and adults who wish to do stuff other than watch football on TV..

We are the smallest country to produce two noble prize winners. We have the most beautiful port - Port Castries - in the Caribbean. We have the most magnificient peaks - The Pitons - in the Caribbean.
So why can't we have the 3rd best market worldwide?

Wow! St.Lucians are their own worst enemy. We dispute a 4% economic growth; now we are disputing the status of the Castries Market; a market hollywood has used to make movies such as Fire Power, etc.

No one said that the City of Castries is the 3rd best worldwide; it's the world-famous Castries Market that they are talking about.

It's possible to have an ugly face; but the most beautiful head of hair anyone has seen.

Who is this idiot praising Richard Federick? Castries is now more a getto after Federick than it was before.

According to comment I read on visitor reviews about St Lucia , one visitor praised our natural busy but warned potential visitors that " Castries is not fit for man or beast"

Like it or not he is the duely elected representative of Central Castries. You go Richard it is your town!!!

Not even a good level ground surface to walk on, and water pools all over, smelling real stink.

Lucians, we can fool ourselves all we want to about our so-called 'fabulous' Castries market, but this is merely a case of the blind leading the blind and putting lipstick on a pig.

You all imbecile people are you all worse enemies. To sit on you all ass and put St.Lucia down when everyone one of us used to feast on green figs breadfruit dasheen patatoes macaboo with a little bit of satlfish chicken backs sardines salt and roasted with little bit of oil. Now some of us have roam to other peoples countries and can buy a better piece of contaminated meat chicken and fish we are running our mouths like a sick kneegrow butt and put our homeland down.To everyone of you all stinkers I say go to hell you all ungrateful crabs.Again I say wether it's SLP or UWP in power it has nothing to do with the beauty and compliments given to the most beautiful caribbean island. We have Jade Mountain the Market the Pitons nobel prize winners not one but two you all figure the rest out.Better Days Ahead kindly grow a new brain or take your head off your ass it's been there too long, now we all know what is ment by shit for brains.

A nasty mouth reflects a dirty mind - SO SAD!

We have Jade Mountain thanks to the Troubetzkoys.

We have many companies thanks to foreign leaders or those who inherited slave wealth.

We have done nothing of value. So thank you Richard Frederick for Castries and this prize. A man who has made mistakes maybe, but who works for his people and has our best interests at heart.

To "anon 10:57 am ".. WHY are u expressing these nasty comments,You have to be mature enough to take healthy criticism even if it involves our fair helen of the west.. your mentality is liken to so many ppl who go with the status quo never willing to change or modernize or be innovative or proactive or operate by intl standards..

castries market is far from perfect everyone with eyes can see that.. the place has a stench as well, lets not veil our eyes and pretend. there is no parking area to allow users access to the market, the food market area is unsuitable to EVER be among the likes of intl markets worldwide.. where fresh catch of the day is in abundance along with lobsters,shark,whale..

I mean castries market looks nice on the outside but lacks so so many facilities to be compared with any huge markets overseas.. so yes its a nice market when we compare it to the rest of the caribbean but thats where we draw the line .. ok.. all patriots who cannot allow for FREEDOM OF DISSENT...food 4 thought
