VAT Clears the Senate

Brilliant suggestion. Locally produced items like fruits & vegetables, eggs (perhaps even milk) should be VAT exempt in order to ensure that the bread-winners in low-income families can afford to feed their members healthy foods. As an educator I was always appalled at how much cheaper it is for parents to provide their kids with empty calories in the form of sodas & salted chips for school snacks than to provide healthy alternatives like fruit salads, locally made juices, etc.

We live in a country that produces bananas & mangoes, but have you checked their prices lately? Sheesh!!... Hope everyone puts ego & individual political agendas aside in order to accept/implement Dr. King's idea for the common good of our kids.

Trust Dr King to put VAT against healthy food consumption - kudos to him for that!! I am sure his suggestion was a wake up call to all the cabinet ministers. Let us hope so.

St Lucia's values on food consumption is very unhealthy which should not be, being a nation of easily available fruits and vegetables.

Back to VAT - I sincerely hope that this new tax on retail items will weed out the "shifty dealings" of the Syrians, Indians and other Asian merchants, who do not give adequate proof of purchase receipts to consumers. Sometimes, depending on how a patron is shopping, to show transparency of their shopping on behalf of another, they need to show receipts. Some of these retailers do not dispense a proof of purchase!! Or worse, adamantly refuse to give it.

I would love to see them get out of this VAT.

The transition from the old system to the new VAT system of taxation ought to be reduced to 72 hours at most ... with no more time or let given ... to prevent gouging by these predator merchants. Or else, we will have Jamaica's foolhardy, topsy-turvy and absolutely foolish implementation of the VAT.

If SLP can collect from the private sector the VAT sums of money, (Or, is it VAsT sums of money), it will be OK. But that is if it does not pour the money ... SECRETLY as usual ... down a huge rabbit hole, and call that another investment.

The way that sales[VAT]tax is implemented makes it an unlevel playing field. If businesses are given the option to register to collect the tax what happens to the business that don't? With the high price of basic items in this country and when consumers are struggling to make ends meet I would think that they would shop were they do not have to shell out extra doug, now isn't that going to hurt the registered companies?, because according to the PM Kenny Anthony a company has to make at least 180k a year the way this should is that if you are a company doing business with the public then you should have to collect the sales tax on behalf of the government so that the playing field will be level. I have a feeling some businesses will start to complain when they start losing monies to businesses that do not collect the VAT.

Up to now, it looks like Saint Lucia is hell-bent on implementing the Jamaican mess of VAT implementation.

We do not learn from our mistakes nor the mistakes of others.

Saint Lucia is idiot real country.
