Time to Remove Criminal Libel Laws

It was Kenny Anthony and the Petrus Compton who sought to maliciously muzzle the press, and freedom of free speech. Very bad for St. Lucia.

But in fairness, from my own recollection, it was Journalist, Rick Wayne, who stood alone to express his abhorrence to this wicked piece of legislation popularly known as "361".

This type of wickedness in high places, will end one good day. For the longest rope has an end.

Petrus Compton got his end. And the rest will follow.

Evil and wickedness never last.

Rick Wayne is a hypocrite, as much as he claims not to take any prisoners in his reporting, Ricky Wayne can be very bias and practice selective reporting. There is a certain high ranking member of the SLP which Mr. Wayne is aware of his shady dealings with a particular bank in St. Lucia and has yet to write one sentence in the Star about this unethical and corrupt individual.

If our reporters do some proper investigation and write without bias there should be no fear of criminal libel against them for what they write.

Blogger above, you are precisely right. Very good point.

Mecah George,

I am in total agreement that the hands of journalist should be unfettered and the antiquated laws pertaining to libel be revisited, but to cite Rick Wayne as the “Poster Boy” for freedom of expression, is tantamount to calling the Pope a good example of a husband.

While Wayne enjoys demeaning individuals who does not shower praise upon him, he censors all ideas that are in opposition to his propaganda or anything that he is ignorant to.

Here is an individual who reports a story about the budget but thinks it necessary to tell you the history of his days walking on the beach naked, but would censor or limit any response to his stupidity to a one sentence response - and you cite this delusional ninny as your hero, when you have an Earle Bousquet or Stan Bishop in your company?

Are you seeking employment with Wayne’s Rag??

Anon-8:16, you called it right!

"First, let's kill all the lawyers"

This Henry VI (Part 2) quote in the play by William Shakespeare, gives us an insight on the war on the common man by the lawyering class and their employers from since that time.

Today, the oppressiveness and sometimes the dubious usefulness of all the contributions of the lawyering class to society -- some obviously dysfunctional -- persists.

In our neck of the woods, the role of that class on the redistribution of wealth tied to The Great 1948 Castries Fire is still one that some families want to continue to sweep under the carpet. (Watch this comment or story disappear from the oneline version of the newspaper -- rather quickly.)

Worse still is this: The legal faculty of the Cave Hill Campus of UWI is reportedly to be one of the bastions and incubators of support for and perpetuation of the haughtiness, aloofness, and the distancing of the lawyering class regarding other professions and professionals in present-day English-speaking Caribbean society.

It is little wonder, the current prime minister, a total and cultural product of that institution (apparently with no extra-Caribbean legal training), would come to embody all the dysfunctional behaviours of that institution.

It has often been reported that law faculty members at Cave Hill, stoutly refuse to mingle with members of other faculties of that same institutions. It is said that their reasoning is that they consider themselves to be such a huge cut above others in other professions and disciplines.

Such arrogance!

Such arrogance has not gone unobserved in the teaching representative (former faculty member) and product (graduate) of that institution here in Saint Lucia.

Does this in part shed light on the Rochamel, Black Bay and Greenburg fiascos?

Naturally, it would be counter to the acculturation, education and training of such persons (products), to be anything of a leader for innovation, change and creativity -- other than in bending and creating news laws to bolster the position of that class in society.

And so we got 361.

Little wonder when others from the faculty of law from the UWI Cave Hill see products of that institution seeking political office, they automatically see candidates for the Oscar Awards. Oscar winners even!

It follows therefore, that the class warfare of those who are from the monied classes in society who can afford to pay those in the lawyering class, and the lawyers themselves, will protect the interests of their class and wealth by seeking to LEGALLY censor free speach, with the deeping and retention of criminal libel laws.

That is why the philospher-playwright William Shakespeare, sought to record in his play, something which still has a great deal of relevance for us, as the sometimes dubious beneficiaries of the English legal and class systems.

After all, as the self-appointed guardians of the status quo, all the manipulators of free speech, the press and the various media houses know one thing in common, and it is this: "If I can control what you know, I can control what you think; I can control how you behave."

It is tragic that you can only be identified with such ambiguity, viz. “Anon 9:05”, because your brilliant analysis of censorship as practiced in the society, and its instruments for the stifling dissemination of significant information deserves recognition.

I really thank you for the sequential and germane issues you presented. Now I understand better why Rick Wayne allows the most asinine responses to the nonsense he refers to as journalism but censors any intelligent responses that enlightens the public.

@ son-of-man. The lack of even the basic training and their poor professional behaviour contribute local journalists being fettered. The situation causes them to be timid, dependent and afraid of being truthful.

Life is interesting, even for the Journalists in Saint Lucia. Under the King's administration Micah was an unfettered critic and he seemed to have made it his personal duty to put the government and the then prime minster in bad light. He was not intimated, he acted without fear and there was no attempt made to intimidate him. But now, under the Kenny administration, Micah feels fettered and is calling publicly for removal of the Criminal Libel Laws. One wonders if he has already been threatened....

Does Micah expect Kenny, a lawyer who uses the law to intimidate and appears to be more sadistic, will ever removal these laws? I think King, if he was still the prime minister, would have likely be more empathetic. Kenny no where Charlie!

...correction remove instead of removal.

Them people at Wayne paper not allow to think with sophistication. Rick Leare Carasco is a weight lifter, who want to pretend he's scholar. the people here more educated & smarter.

Petrus Compton. Where is he and what happened to him? Didn't think he thought the longest rope had an end.

You don like pope man, now the man in big troubles all them corrupt. some them in jail, and pope man running away from fire. them catholic cult is demons.

I hope Kenny Anthony's second wife is not one of his advisors. Because if this is so, judging from what is heard at Cave Hill UWI Campus, St. Lucia will sink down the hell-hole that much faster.

Kenny like all the other prime ministers that went before him has not shown any leadership skills.

They are powerful with their intimidation and especially with victimization, punishment, and mischief.

Nobody wants to follow in their footsteps in terms of what they have done.

No young person jumps up and exclaims 'I want to be LIKE the prime minister!'

Of course, some young and not-so-young people might want to BE, but NOT like ... the prime minister.

Past and present prime ministers have never ever shown any knowledge, any ability or any capacity to galvanize the ENTIRE populatin, or a CRITICAL MASS of the people, to do anything great as a people. As a nation.

They go through the motions. Through the ceremonies. They make their usual empty speeches that you soon forget after you have heard, or have read the last word.

They are just as ceremonial as the governor general, being visible here and there, and taking the joyrides to conferences and meetings, but with very few positive outcomes, or any note-worthy outcomes for that matter.

Talk about financial waste and duplication of roles. Of effort.

There is a dismaying leadership vacuum here in Saint Lucia and this is pervasive throughout the former colonies of Britain in this region.

Very few prime ministers have achieved greatness ... except for that being narrowly and foolishly defined by absolute morons, as staying in, and holding on to power for a very long time and ... irrespective of the means of achievement to this end.

The morons in the SLP traded a progressive 'term limits' approach and saddled Saint Lucia with an 'absolutist monarch' for a party leader.

The rank and file of the SLP wiith this retrograde step and retention of such behaviour betray having a deep inferiority complex.

Kenny, Compton, and superlatively worst yet, and of most recent vintage, the 'scraping the barrel's bottom' King premiership, all prime ministers in recent memory, HAVE NEVER EVER shown any leadership capacity, knowledge, or know-how to inspire.

This absence of meaningful leadership can be directly attributed to the paralyzing sedative administered to the five senses of the Lucian people by the post-colonial mis-education of the Commoners, especially those who lust for political leadership by selling their souls to the descendants of the slave masters. Just observe with reflection, while these brain-damaged neocons sing the hymn to “God Save Their Queen”, with the hopes that they will be recognized and honored for their treachery against the people of Lucia, and their undying loyalty to the Queen of Slaves - Elizabeth-I, and her reincarnation Elizabeth-II.

These are the most shameless bunch of Negroes; so what do you expect from the deceased?
