Unfortunately, this is not the case in most local companies. Staff could go above and beyond their call of duty, only to be stiffed by greedy and easily threatened employers.

A crucial factor left out of this article is the level of autonomy allowed by employers. In SLU, minimally educated line staff are rarely given much autonomy--if any. Hence, the extra shopping bag you may have requested becomes a huge issue if they believe it is a contravention of work rules.
