In a perfect world, employee efforts to improve their skills and facilitate innovation would be recognized and adequately compensated. Unfortunately, this is not the case in most local companies. Staff could go above and beyond their call of duty, only to be stiffed by greedy and easily threatened employers.
A crucial factor left out of this article is the level of autonomy allowed by employers. In SLU, minimally educated line staff are rarely given much autonomy--if any. Hence, the extra shopping bag you may have requested becomes a huge issue if they believe it is a contravention of work rules. They see themselves as powerless and replaceable.

When the job is a paycheck, why be concerned about anything else but keeping the paycheck by just pleasing the boss?
