You don't need to be literate to become the prime minister of the island of St. Lucia. So why bother?

C'mon ... that was below the belt, blogger #1 ... I, ME - would say the same for YOU!!

Alexandra - your comment is sooo right!! One of my main problems (and I do address whenever I am in the middle of it), is the lack of proper ORAL communication with the younger generation of today.

I could go on and on about this - but it is really pathetic. E.g. I am a customer at a MAJOR telecommunications outlet, and the young lady proceeds to repeat my cell number using the word "FREE" for the number "THREE" - I put her to task, and requested that she put her tongue between her teeth to say "THREE" - needless to say, the poor thing was embarrassed!! She couldn't do it!! As for her diction and tone of speaking - VERY POOR!!

How do the young people get away with being employed with poor communication skills, spelling, attitude, etc - I don't get it!!

Alexandra speaks of educators - even some of them have their shortcomings, in using big words in the wrong context (I have collected quite a few malapropisms in that respect) - pathetic I tell you!!

The situation almost makes me want to applaud some parents who home school their children - and the come out a lot better for it.

Blogger #2, you and Ms Grant are so far behind the curve. You are fighting the last war. Literacy means much more than even your broad definition. By your standards, we are going to be running twice as hard just to stay where we are. I am a retired teacher and lived on three continents. Good luck!

Have a heart! Don't ignore Guy Joseph and Marcus Nicholas. These two country bookies can benefit from a little education also. Give them a hand and give them a feed too.
