A good start to changing the education system is for reporters to refrain from calling less academically inclined students "backward children."

Universal Secondary Education has allowed all students the opportunity to attend a secondary school. While that was a good move, enough was not done to prepare teachers for the implementation of USE.
Our teachers at the secondary schools are accustomed to working with the top 60-70% of students who were able to pass the Common Entrance Exam. They are not used to working with the other students who could not pass the CEE.
To change the education system, the teachers need professional development to be able to work with students who may have learning difficulties. PD is also necessary to change the mentality of the teachers so they learn that children will be at different levels of academic ability but the role of each teacher is to meet the childlren at their level and raise them to a higher one. That, along with curriculum modifications will help.

This poor education problem is yet another reason St Lucia needs top-quality university facilities with top-level professors right here on island: ALL our teachers need BETTER training skills.
BRING ON OUR UNIVERSITY, NOW!!

Why is everything in St Lucia delayed indefinitely?: our HIA redevelopment, our Soufriere Geothermal works, our promised Universities, our continuously-being-built hospitals, 4-6 promised 5-star hotels and golf courses, etc. The list of broken and-or delayed promises is endless - no wonder many St Lucians have either ran away from our beautiful and potentially rich land or have simply ended up jaded and given up all hope in everything.

There is nothing wrong with our education system, we have one of the best education systems in the world. Why are we blaming the system and not puting the blame where it is due? The blame is supposed to be on the parents and students themselves. What changes do we need? The students in St lucia are to happy because there are places around the world where students classes are under trees, where women have to hide in fear in cozy basements to get an education, yet these people learn, with the very basics. Today the students in St Lucia has proper clasrooms, qualified teachers, books, computers and all kinds of facilitites etc, etc. So if they don't want to take their school work seriously, why blame the system? Some students want to go to school and you would see them liming all hour of the night in school uniform, they would go to school when they want and when they attend it is to make trouble in the class, they would do no homework or study and people want to blame the system when these student fail. There is nothing wrong with the system if some students of a class who put in the effort does well and the other who play the fool fail because both groups got the same teaching. I know there are some students who are stronger than others, but with a good effort and encouragement at home all will do well. There is nobody who cannot learn if they want to, all they have to do is to put the effort.

I'm speaking from experience, most St Lucians excell and top their class when they study overseas. The college I attended in the USA there were four St Lucias we all top our classes, so what is so wrong with our education system? The only changes that has to be made to the education system is to dicipline the students, so to that they would attend school everyday, go home early to do their homework, revise and study their school work. If I had that kind encouragement growing up today I would still have been better than I'm today.
Some people would say that some students are not strong academacally so they must be put in a technical class. I diagree because all student need to learn the academics first to have a solid background then branch out to the field of their choice later. Some student are early learner and some take a little more time. I know of a guy who very dunce in primary school in my class, he could not have passed the exam to enter Morne Tech if he had tried so he went to beg for chance and some how they ascepted him. He struggled with determination to pass the course, he barely scraped a pass. Today this guy has furthered his education, written a book and is a lecturer at that same college on the Morne.

You forget to mention another very important reason for our failing education system ... FAMILY LIFE!!

With schooling comes PARENTS! Reliable, responsible parents. If ALL schools have an operating, responsible PTA this would be part of the solution.

Some parents are teachers as well ... THEY should be the ones to instill PTAs in all schools.
