The question is; when have a sex worker (or any woman for that matter) been to the hospital or the family planning unit, requesting assistance and was turned away because they were perceived to being a 'sex worker'? When last was anybody being arrested for selling sex or even buggering? If the sex worker needs a regular check-up, that is between her and her doctor. Since sex workers are in the front-line of the onslaught of venereal diseases in their line of work, they are more astute at protecting themselves. Those that are careless are careless not because of the criminality of the nature of their occupation. We have been a generally tolerant society despite the statutes as it pertains to sex workers. Therefore to maintain the balance; let the religious zealots have their statutes while ensuring that medical institutions do not discriminate against sex workers.

In this age of HIV anyone who facilitates or condones prostitution is unrealistic and insensitive to the well-being of the social fabric. The ramifications of prostitution are never positive, even for the so-called sex worker who is not directly involved in the act per se.

If the government is serious about stamping out the business of prostitution they should identify all sex business places and proceed to eradicate them.

Mitra Cazaubon, I hope someone brings to Dr. King's attention your following observation: "But have we thought this through? Have we sat down and mapped out how this can affect us in the next 3 or 10 years? Yes we want to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS but at what cost? Increase in substance abuse, exploitation of children, the breaking down of our families? Are we ready to pay the price? Is this the option we want to give our young women as the way out when there seems to be none?"

Dr. King needs to invite the people to be more innovative with a view to regulating this complex problem, instead of taking the easy way out as has been done in some countries. For example, why doesn't he contribute some of his wealth to the cause? The government has more pressing issues to take care of. I agree with Minister La Corbiniere that his government has no such priority at the moment. More jobs, less prostitution.

I fail to see how making prostitution legal will lower the rate of HIV and AIDS. So the prostitutes will use protection then? Why are they not using them now?
If prostitution is made legal, more than likely the prostitues will be the poor and disadvantaged in society, thus adding another ill to their lives. This should not happen.
