St. Lucia still walking the China-Taiwan diplomatic tightrope!

Why does it appear that St Lucia always approaches Taiwan like an insignificant little island of ex-enslaved beggars? Is this mentality left over from our years as a neglected and subservient British colony? The Taiwanese should know better because that’s almost the same way they relate fearfully to their giant parent, Mainland-China. The truth is we are NOT beggars: we have a diplomatic arrangement with Taiwan concerning our votes for them in the United Nations!

If Taiwan really wanted to help us – and not just patronize us with pathetic little handouts – they would help us with 2 particular and persistent problems: (1) our pathetic prehistoric infrastructure – the poor quality of our dangerous roads and highways, the redevelopment of Hewanorra, and our Soufriere geothermal development for producing cheap and plentiful energy to attract a large variety of industries (Nevis and Dominica are moving full-steam-ahead with theirs) and (2) help build our current fledgling industrial complex into a mini-Taiwan of the Caribbean.

If Taiwan really wants to do something like this for St Lucia, they could do it easily; but the question remains, “do they have any such lofty goals in mind for us?” I hope PM Anthony does; because if all these things were accomplished, without a doubt they would generate tens-of-thousands of jobs for St Lucians; and if Taiwan cannot help us in some truly MAJOR development projects, we should “have a little talk with their giant parent.”

You must be out of your mind or something. We were in the arms of the Europeans for hundreds of years and they gave us nothing. Now, we have hardly gotten to know Taiwan, and you want to give them a laundry list of our needs.

Why didn't you present such a list to the French or to the British?

The truth of the matter is that Taiwan owes us nothing; and we should be grateful for any assistance they provide.

St.Lucians have made it abundantly clear that they would rather go with Taiwan than China; but the Kenny Administration hasn't yet decided.

Kenny, just do the will of the people. Please!!!!
It's not what you want, but what the people want. Have you forgotten that it was the people who gave you your job?

Writer at 6:05AM, you’re just babbling away because you can’t be that stupid. Blogger #1 is right – evidently, your type displays the mentality of a beggar! When you ask like a beggar, you get the scraps of a beggar or whatever is usually given to an unwelcomed dog at a scrumptious table!

Obviously, it is up to the PM and his government how they choose to ask for what they want, but why don’t you read first the Taiwanese Embassy’s own statement? ". . . [he] invited the Prime Minister to provide Taiwan with his new government’s national development plan, itemized and prioritized, for further discussion.”
Did you notice the words “provide,” and “national development plan, itemized and prioritized?” In other words, Taiwan made us the offer!!
By now, you should have learned that when one is asked what you need or want, one should respond truthfully by exactly expressing your requirements. Now, whether you get them or not is an entirely different matter: that is left to the decision and resources of the giver.

to the last 2 bloggers ..its true taiwan asked about our national dev. plan that doesnt mean they will comply to it its just diplomatic jargon ... esp in these recession times ...cause most developing countries have huge infastructual goals costing in the regions of billions of dollars ... so what does that say will taiwan put us b4 their ppl ..
Either dr.KA.. focus on one major project perhaps costing a couple hundred million EeCD.. that might be a tight rope for taiwan to fulfill but it might be feasible for taiwan who has billions in foreign reserves as blogger #1 mentioned b4 i rem that blogger.. i liked the ideas put forward by him/her the last time and now reiterated... i wish we could get a major project most likely road development or container harbour at cul de sac..and we should as a nation be able to finance our own agricultural and pond fishing projects which really amounts in the tens of thousands ECD .. i think we can manage that as a gov and ppl.. WHY DONT EITHER CHINA OR TAIWAN TEACH US TO GROW RICE AND WE CAN PRODUCE IT RIGHT HERE AND REDUCE OUR IMPORT BILL THATS A MORE PRACTICAL AGRICULTURAL INCENTIVE ..RIGHT ?

TO ANON..#2 I FORGOT I THINK WHAT U SAID IS POINTED...TAIWAN OWES US NOTHING.. only for recognision at the world body UN.. thats it thats all we can offer them ..support on a geo-political level.. SO WHAT WE GET IS WHAT WE HAVE TO ACCEPT BE IT FROM TAIWAN OR CHINA... they will quicker give us 2 halves..-GRANTS+LOANS...never unlimited access to their deep well of cash..

A very poor analysis.

A cursory analysis of what has happened to date will show the following.

Through a third party Dr. Anthony met with the Taiwanese PRIOR to the Nov 28th , 2011 elections.

In that meeting the promised the Taiwanese that he would continue the diplomatic recognition if his party won the elections.
It is quite possible the SLP received money from the Taiwanese to run the elections.

Dr. Anthony since then has played a Kenny and tony making it seem as if he is still deciding. Almost 7 weeks after the elections someone can write such an asinine article which is made to cover Kenny or Tony's tracks in this saga.

The present SLP government has no intention of moving away from Taiwan and it is a joke that the local media refuse to see what is under their collective noses.

The only think the SLP government will demand is that Chous leaves in order to make it seem as if Dr. Anthony was negotiating between Taiwan or China.

it is also a sign of how ineffective the UWP is going to be in the next few years that they have not even brought up this "6 for a 9 " by Kenny.

The SLP will never give up $1 million per constitutiency annually. That is why they are staying with Taiwan.

It absolutely flies in the face of all Kenny and tony said between 2008 -2011.

blogger 10:18 am that is a good analyse.. well to reiterate i too sense money was levelled at both parties at the last elections .. and if DR.KA...is focusing on jobs most likely he'll keep taiwan they dont drown us with their ppl when they give us grant aid as does China when they finance projects its always chinese employees which i understand from a CHINA GOV POLICY..

Indeed DR.KA is def keeping taiwan although we still or should i ask do we still have chinese rep/s at cap estate who never left stlucia after uwp came in ..will this chinese rep finally leave st lucia ? i hope DR.KA.. gets atleast 200 million ECD in aid in retrospection to the alledged 120 million ECD under the UWP.. afterall if he is gonna keep taiwan he might as well get something extra for the country and perhaps alledge under the table cash flows..DIDNT SLP IN THEIR MANIFESTO ALLUDED TO CHINA BUILDING A NEW THEATRE FOR THE ARTS ? I suppose taiwan will now...

Taiwan doesn't want to be our friend to give us money; Taiwan wants to be our friend to take money from us; and that will be coming in the form of trade.

It's only a matter of time before "Made in Taiwan" products start to flood our stores.

For every dollar they'll give us in aid, they'll be taking twenty out of St.Lucia. Just wait and see.
