Mr. Peters,
I'm glad you're writing on a topic which has been close to my heart for a whole generation.
I did discus similar subjects and other developmental matters with Sir John who listened and agreed, but nothing came of it. The thinking at the time was such that, St. Lucia was not quite ready for such ambitious undertaking and whatever money available could be better spent elsewhere.
I hope one day to touch base with you, on such thinking and share my many correspondence over the years.
Sadly, I've given up on all elected governments of St. Lucia. No more writing and offering of my opinions.
Mr. Peters, I think you are well qualified to take it from here, and I wish you all the best, and good luck in your endeavours, you will need it.
BTW, why not have a shot at the next elections, it would be nice to have an Engineer in the house.

CLIFFORD.

@10:14 AM, the last sentence? My thoughts exactly. Please consider it seriously Mr. Peters.

Engineer Peters, you continue exposing these clowns with what needs to be done. The gardens is dare to my heart and as an Engineer myself. I always wonder what were these clowns thinking in destroying the green lands. You wonder why sports is where its at today....The gardens was the mecca. Keep giving em hell.

A network of roads...not lanes, deep into the slum areas starting from the bottom of Calvery road moving east to Marchand road.At a central location on the reclaimed area build a modern police headquarters. As for affordable housing: build on both the west and east coast, and later on carefully selected reclaimed areas. you got to move the people around. Later, that block of CDC buildings in the photo has to go.Be bold ,John!

Where is Julian Hunte....anyone??

I think public housing is a divisive issue. It will end up like rest of policy and just be handed out to de party. It also robs the individual of their responsibility to sort themselves out. We need to be encouraging less dependence on the state, not more.

Rest of the article was sound.

So right Peters. You see some politicians are only interested in constituencies when it is elections time. After that their interest becomes their pocket.

Look at this crime headache and gang warfare between hopspital road and Faux a chaud. This is a result of created slums sanctioned by politicians as a voter base. It is haunting the country now. Persons there desecrating graves and with water and light connections sanctioned by those public utilities.

If that is not enough look at this new community springing up opposite Hardest Hard Restaurant. Just where you referred to. Who is monitoring that

I wish Mr. Peters success in getting his ideas across, sadly there seems to be a significant percentage of the population who don't want change. These proposals would give employment to many for some time to come. What about standing at the election as an independent?

Anonymous said...

SHORT ANSWER: Nobody. You have not been brought up to look out for your own future, except through plain dishonest short-cuts like robbing, stealing and telling lies like our politicians in both political parties.

Anonymous said...

Mr Peters, you have caught the mood of the country but unfortunately the Punch and Judy (the two political parties) are the only show in town and they are steeped in nepotism. Like some of the other respondents I suggest you stand as an independent. YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!!!

If Castries should be modernized and beautified, why on earth would the government of St.Lucia(both parties) run to develop the Water Front instead of the city?
Picture those 5 or 6 government buildings standing along the Water Front in Castries proper. That would have given the city a boost; and the Water Front could have been used for business: a hotel, a couple of first-class restaurants, a shopping mall, etc.

But then again government officials seem to enjoy looking at cruise ships entering and leaving Port Castries from their offices along the Water Front.

Who were the bozos who added the extension to the west side of the parliament building? They certainly defaced the architectural beauty of that building...the one in constitution park.

...."determination and imagination"....how appropriate!..should be the new motto.

Who created the "Slums" you spoke of?...

Clifford says:

That which Mr. Peters have written is only the beginning of something much greater than what appears on the surface.
Let me say, it's a movement that begun with his thoughts in print. I regret so much that I don't live in St.Lucia and after an absence of fifty six years, there's no chance of me being present to organize anything, but I can share my thoughts, and there's lots there to share.
But we should not start and end in Castries, potential members of the movement should target each and every Town in St.Lucia. Leave the elected members to do what they know to do too well.
In times such as this, if you love your Country, begin the 'PLANNING' processes, and I guarantee you the incarnation will take form.
This is not Politics - it's a thought.

Castries is a total disgrace, such a sad city. When I visit St. Lucia I avoid the City. Filthy waterways littered with garbage. Unbelievable how the Government of St. Lucia has absolutely no pride in its capital City. Tourists coming in daily - what kind of impression do they leave with?

Shame. shame on the Government of St. Lucia

Peters is using the crap from the former permanent secretary; turned senator; turned politician kicked out of office.

John Compton is the last person to refer to. He did all he did in St. Lucia for his henchmen.

He never liked St. Lucians. Do not forget that.

The Matalons from Jamaica and those friends from Barbados like COW was what Compton's projects were all about.

He never meant any Lucian no damn good.

This article smacks of a former permanent secretary of Planning; who hired John Peters some years ago; desperately hiding behind Peters; trying to push his dirty-crooked head back again into St. Lucian politics; after he got this blinking hard kick by the people of St. Lucia.

Not because St. Lucia is in a desperate situation must we allow crooks to slip through. Be careful and VIGILANT . Lucians; BEWARE of CROOKS attempting to slide through.

Clifford says:

Here we go again. It didn't take long did it, before some misguided persons turn some idea into politics; can't escape the lingering habit of 'Party Politics' simply because someone have cared enough show a way to clean up the mess in Castries. What if I wrote about the mess in other towns?
Many years ago I wrote about the potential redevelopment of Castries; I quit writing when I realized that the ones who had the means to do something were too busy doing what politicians in St. Lucia do best, talk, talk, promises, promises. I am my own man and have never depended on politicians for a job.
All my kids have graduated and now helping the grands with their careers. All I live for now is helping relatives back home who have fallen on hard times.
Let me say to the writers @ 6:27 AM and 6:31 AM, what was it that scare you? I don't know Mr. Peters, but hope to meet him some day because his ideas on development are the same as mine.
I don't care whose feathers are ruffled, you guys may have axes to grind, but my plans for a better St. Lucia will survive, whether you like it or not.
Why are people always resistant to change, why must every thing in St.Lucia hang on politics, why should anyone be suspicious of a Lucian voicing his opinions on better Planning?
Is it that you're afraid that your fragile dependence on your little job is threatened? don't blame me I was not the one who made you promises, but I and others can show you a better way for development.

The BayWalk Mall at Rodney Bay should have been on the Water Front at Conway, and those government buildings should have been in the heart of the city. I agree with @6:03 AM.

Clifford says:
This is not a game of Chess, you are talking millions of dollars and private property too. Castries is not a Chessboard where one is free to move objects at will.
Maybe in your next life if you ever become a millionaire you can dictate the terms but for now just watch and learn.
I've been around long enough to remember Conway when it was a little nook hidden away in the corner of Castries, where humble folks and fishermen made an honest and decent living.

Look at it today, what do you think? I truly hope the same transformation will happen for Foux-a-choud, Hospital road and the Tributary area of the Castries River.
Do you know there were dozens of humble one and two-bed-room homes located between the area of Jeremy street and the west side of "The Gardens". You know what happened, don't you? I hope by now you can see what I'm talking about.
It will take some time, since money is not easily available as before, but give it time, change will happen.

August 05 at 8.50AM the point at issue is this; and I repeat:

We Lucians must be vigilant that those hiding behind us with their own agenda (political and self-serving) agenda must be recognized for exactly what they are.

When a Commission of Inquiry conducted by a renowned international jurist; states clearly that a certain former Permanent Secretary in this couuntry must never again be placed in the governance of this country; and we all know the many shell companies he established; and the Roseau lands of government WHAT WENT DOWN WITH THAT ETC. ETC. ETC. SAMURAI ETC.
we must be vigilant that CROOKS in whatever form are kept out of this country's government. Especially crooks identified in such very clear terms inn a Commission of Inquiry Report of the United Nations Scandal.

That's the fact . We are tired of crooks taking advantage of us in this country. Under the guise of Public service of this country.

Clifford says:

You @ 7:16 AM. tells me one thing, that you suffer from many fears.
You are a victim of what politics in St. Lucia was (and maybe still is)I don't know and I don't care since at this stage of my life I never did and still have no such ambition for politics.
It is sad, but the culture of abuse on anyone who voices his opinion on any matter that may require approval by Government, no matter how beneficial it may turn out to be, for the government in power and the citizens on a whole, red flags go up, meaning, ATTACK.
I come here daily because having been away 80% of my life, retired and have little else to do, I think it comical for people who depend so much on politics for a living, should worry about my voicing my opinion on a subject that I once earned my living on.
Little man, with a little fearful mind, don't worry my boy, all my life I have built, beautified and make people happy, so have no fear.
Don't curse the messenger, curse the fear.

@:7:16AM

....the problem is the girdle of slums which have become incubators for criminals!..this is the goddam problem; along with the physical and aesthetical deterioration of the city of Castries.

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget my son
To include everyone

I tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
'Til the sandman he comes

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land

Something's wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And of things that will bite, yeah

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
