..elementary my friend!...teach Art and Music in the primary schools and you will have a generation of enthusiast....also the artists have to be proactive when it comes to promoting their work!

I beg to disagree somewhat with the awkward destruction of the Baroque themes in Basilica with the garish folk art. That seems very out of place to me. But 'to each his own' they say.

To "2:14 PM" - what exactly are you trying to say/imply? What is your concept of "garish folk art"? Your comment has me stupified!!

To the first commentator, to be a "proactive" artist here in St Lucia is easier said than done. Walk a mile in Luigi's shoes for you to have an idea of his lament.

Before ART is taught in the schools, there has to be proficienet art TUTORS. Before ART can be brought to further educational levels, art (in ALL its forms) has to be taught at a "business" level. Yes, "business"!! Readers do the math. St Lucia's educational system needs to be "proactive" in this field, because the creative arts is a HUGE industry.

Just like everyone else, artists have bills to pay, materials to be bought are not cheap. WE need YOUR support, not lip service.

And further, by "ARTISTS", I mean the visual, performing, literary, film, etc, etc, etc and so forth.

Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder. I love the Baroque Era and all its art forms: architecture, paintings, literature and music.

Every art form has its place. Thematically, the contrast of the artistic styles in the Basilica hurts the eyes. The newer paintings or images belong to a more modern architectural setting. That being said does not in any way diminish the quality of the paintings.
The point being made here is that the setting is wrong. I don't care for any political or nationalistic arguments. Don't give me that argument that because we do not have a museum we should place them there. I don't buy that at all.

....to all the nay-sayers: a journey begins with the first step!....just saying that you need support, is not going to have the expected response. You must convince the people that they HAVE to support you!

It is a truism: You do not demand but command respect. This is unless it is the type of respect that is coerced from the various forms of terrorism and murderous primitivism, as evidenced by the news-making predominantly primitive cultures of the Middle East.

We must grow up and maturely learn to command ... and not DEMAND respect.

I could not agree more with Younger St. Omer.
