ADDRESSING THE TUF

Whenever dealing with Kenny Anthony or Phillip Pierre watch every word.

Kenny Anthony addressed the nation on Sunday night and laid all the blame for St. Lucia's fiscal problems on the Stephenson King Administration. I am not an apoligist for King who was an abysmal failure as Prime Minister with the felon and characters in his Administration.

Yet we cannot let the Labour Party lies stand.

Under Kenny Anthony St. Lucia's (1997-2006) interest payments on debt went from $1.25 million per month to $1.5 million per WEEK. From over $16 million annually to over $70 million annually.

Under Phillip Pierre and Kenny Anthony from 1997 -2006 our public service and wage bill increased by thousands and tens of million of dollars respectively.

Under the SLP the national debt EXPLODED by billions even as agriculture failed, murders increased, and the fabric of our society dissolved.

Then Kenny comes on as if Tony has nothing to do with what is wrong with St. lucia today.

This is like the arsonist complaining that houses are burning down in the city !

One of the BIG lies he has been peddling recently is that the public service wage bill as a %age was bigger when he first came into power than it is now. The Lie: The national budget has at least DOUBLED because of his profligate spending so that the wage bill is actually much larger in quantitative terms but smaller in percentages relative to the budget. He will peddle the former fraudalent figure and not mention the latter. Unfortunately our non thinking electorate do not know how to think their way through these issues.

Lies, damn lies and Phillips ststistics!

Labour Party leaders are such accomplished liers that you would come away from Sunday's speech thinking that Kenny Anthnoy just appeared on the scene in the last year and had never touched the national finances ever in his life.

Go figure!

Kenny!! That bluffer!!!

“It comprises new wages and salaries of about $6.6 million, which was driven by a net increase of about 124 individuals in the Public Service. Of those 124 new employees, 40 were employed in the VAT Office. Additionally, there were 39 new police officers, 12 new nurses, 5 new fire officers and 4 new appointments in top management, that is, Grades 19-21. There were also 24 new daily-paid workers"

I wonder why so many new people were added to the VAT office if it is a simplification of the tax system. What are the folks who were responsible for the other taxes now doing with their time? Also, an explanation for the necessity of 4 new appointments into management would be helpful. What percentage increase in top management is this?

Anonymous said...

This situation, regardless of which party is responsible, is grave and should be taken seriously. We have to begin to fend for ourselves in a manner that is sustainable. Vat is a big step forward. The bigger nations have waned the dependent countries like ours. They have put in place austerity measures in other to cut on their deficits. Some of these measures include laying off public sersants including school teachers and thus increase the size of the class room. School supplies are rationed in order to cut cost. They will not make sacrifices for our benifit. St Lucians need to get it to their heads that the time of receiving donations are over. Kenny should do as they did. That is lay off non-productive public employees and add to the workload of the rest which is the method employed elsewhere especially in the private sector. Ask anyone living in developed countries. They are made to work more, sometimes even for less. In these times it is a previlege to have a job.

How can Kenny do anything for St Lucia when he seem to be completely out of any new ideas?

"The national budget has at least DOUBLED because of his profligate spending so that the wage bill is actually much larger in quantitative terms but smaller in percentages relative to the budget. He will peddle the latter relatively fraudalent figure and not mention the former"

So true because when the budget first hit $1 billion from the $1/2 billion under John Compton Phillip was so glad to say they had a billion dollar economy!

What the incompetents and "6 for 9ers" did not say was that to get there they borrowed at least one billion of that over the first 5 years of their Administrations.

Now they saying that it is someone else responsible for debt!

Anonymous said...

Please forgive Kenny Anthony- for he know not what he does.

The fool came on national radio, gave a speech, and forgot that he shares responsiblity for the countries debt.

It is either he is a blantant liar or should have his head checked.

Anonymous said...

Bla Bla Bla can the govt afford the increase?

Most St. Lucians do not know one fart about business or economics. If they believe that the ignorant crooked politicians that they drunkenly elect through the inspiration from their Bounty rum and the Piton beers, will ever educate them to know the difference or come to terms with the real public and private sector issues, let them wait there.

Band couyons!

Anonymous said...

And the play acting continues !!!

In spite of the fact that the Kenny Anthony/Phillip Pierre Administrations have bankrupted St. Lucia with annual borrowing in excess of $150 million and placing thousands on the civil service payroll - they are going to still give their election partners (TUF) more money that has to come from borrowing.

Expect a one-off payment between $1,000 and $2,000 with a 5 to 10% increase over 3 years that will cost the people of St. Lucia another $100 million - to be borrowed!

This is how the elite liberal class bribe people. This is also why they have to institute more and more draconian tax and personal liberty laws to keep the people in check as their inept governance causes havoc with our societies.

more trouble ahead as we become more and more bankrupt and as the economy goes underground to get away from VAT !

I think the PM came out strong and made his case which seems to be objective and in the interest of the country. One sector cannot be given so much when the rest are suffering.
However in comparing local salaries with regional ones the PM need to go beyond what he mentioned and compare Ministers' and PS salaries with regional ones, and salaries to locally engaged foreign consultants with local consultants, many of them having a tough time these days finding any work.
The entire fiscal system need to be revamped and streamlined.

Anonymous said...

Man whoever you are, kenny/pierre is having is having a serious effect on you. plse admit it n lets move on with the discussion on the economy.

Anonymous said...

The PM is calling for the citizens to make sacrifices, however, what sacrifices is the administration willing to make? I haven't seen any. What I've seen is a host of jobs where individuals are receiving thousands of dollars, yet we don't know what they are doing for that money. If the PM wants the citizens to make sacrifices, he must lead by example.

Anonymous said...

Is that not always the formula.

When you catch these profligate spenders and lala land leaders and their hacks and the ones who are benefitting from the failure of leadership their answer is: 'Move on, move on - there is nothing to see here! Not important! Let us discuss waht WE want to discuss that will benefit US - not what is ailing the country.'

So phillip and Kenny had nothing to do with the bankruptcy when 2 billion was borrowed between 1997 -2006.

Phillip and Kenny had nothing to do with Agriculture when it collapsed between 1997 -2006.

Phillip and Kenny had nothing to do with the internal security when 300 + were murdered between 1997 -2006 and crime escalated unbeleivably.

Kenny and Phillip had nothing to do with society when drug usage, prostitution , gang warfare escalated between 1997 -2006.

What you should really ask is why intelligent people bother to write about these issues when most lucians just act as if they are clueless.

--------------------------------

This statement obviously does not reflect any deep knowledge or understanding of compensation issues.

Local compensation should never seek to mirror exactly what is happening in other countries, because no two economies are exactly alike.

The domestic situations past and present, with respect to prevailing economic conditions, have set certain forces in motion regarding the levels and the cost-of-living conditions existing at the time. And most of all, wages and salaries because of inflation and other factors, face stubborn resistance to be taken downwards.

We may want to pare down the excessive demands of labour regarding the ability of the employer (this time the government) to pay, but in terms of fairness and equity, if prevailing economic conditions warrant it, the wages, salaries and benefits to all workers must be reflective of (among other things):

(a) the taxation systems in place (personal income taxes, not excluding payments to national insurance),
(b) the cost of living (trending at the moment -- food, clothing, housing/rent, etc), and
(c) disposable income, and discretionary income associated with these, and not what happens or has happened in other countries or other economies, where economic conditions though apparently similar operate dynamically and differently from ours/.

KENNY ANTHONY LOOKS LIKE A VAMPIRE!

Kenny Anthony needs to repay the St. Lucia Government Treasury the $48 million dollars he gave to Rochamel/

He took on a transaction with the RBTT of Trinidad, did not have one clue about the mechanics of Put or Call Options and ended up leaving the Treasury with this loss as a result of his ignorance, stupidity and arrogance.

We the Public must now come together and demand that Kenny Anthony pay that money back. The Country cannot afford to lose so much money because of Kenny Anthony's ignorance of financial transactions. High Finance.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the Blogger above, Kenny must now pay the millions of dollars he caused to go down the drain for Roachamel.

And we must get him to do that now.

Anonymous said...

As part of the prime minister adress to the nation he talked the x..millions of$ government have to spend as a result of hurrican Thomas.
Now I wondering if the government did not insure the country for hurrican desasters ???

Although we all know that the TUF which represents -- supposedly, the greatest repository of technical skills on the island as envisioned by our own Sir Arthur Lewis, namely, -- the civil saurus, sorry the civil service, this body is darn well bluffing its way again, and putting the sustainability of this fragile economy at risk. Why?

You see these people are being entirely selfish, disingenuous, less than forthcoming, and sometimes openly dissembling, regarding the issues we face nationally. Why?

Invariably, as the largest group of employed people in the economy, the actors within this body -- especially the civil service -- almost never, ever talk about the impact of the knock-on effects of past and proposed settlements in terms of two things:

1. the impact on the real wage regarding those settlements or collective bargaining agreements, and

2. the issue and the impact of productivity in the economy, meaning, what the economy can bear.

This lack of sensitivity is appalling.

To my my mind, as long as the CSA and the TUF keep on avoiding and skirting these two FUNDAMENTAL issues in their wage negotiations and settlements, (a) the rest of the nation, (b) the future growth of the economy, and (c) the ordinary man in the street, will pay a huge price for subsidizing their welfare gains, the largely and eventually nominal increases, and the inflationary impacts of those raises and settlements.

Is it that no one has ever called them on all their hot air?

Or, is it that they, or the government negotiators just simply lack the necessary technical skills?

Nobody or country will bail this nation out of our reckless consumption spending.

Perhaps, it is time to access and tap into the resources of the ILO (the International Labour Organisation) for skill development for a change, and help remove the pervasive curse and scourge of ignorance that plagues the people of this nation.

Sacrificies need to be made at all levels including the executive branch. Too many are suffering whilst only a few reap all the benifits. The people must first get out of the partisan mode and demand changes to benefit the majority. This country has been run by a political party and only to benifit the party in power and it's supporters. This prejudice must stop but will continue if we allow it. It is about time we begin to think out of the box. We have become so selfish we do not care who suffers as long as we prosper. Therefore we make demands regardless of how it is fulfilled. We have to look at the seriousness of the bleak economic situation just revealed before we become obstinate with our demands. I take it seriously because it is global and secondly the prime minister would not put himself on the line with an unpopular demise had it not been the truth.

Kenny Anthony has received or is to receive a gratuity of over $700,000 when he leaves government. He will receive a pension which starts at 55 for ex MPs. He may already have a pension from CARICOM.
He received a $100,000 car from a 'grateful' constitutient when he first casme into power.

He has his own legal office.

These librals are all about their own pockets and amassing wealth.

The first thing they should do is CUT the Minister's salaries by 10% then they can talk to the Trade Union Federation.

As it is in order to protect his votes and power and wealth he will give in at a cost of $100 million to the people of St. Lucia over the next 3 years.

bitter days are here again !

A blogger said:

That is giving too much credit to Kenny! The record shows he NEVER had any ideas in the first place.

He was so missing the boat that the only Minister he had who did anything to help the people of St. Lucia was Sarah flood and - he fired her from Cabinet and kept the marionette Menissa Rambally!

Congratulations to the Voice for being the #1 blogger St. Lucia site on the Internet !

"You have to be a thorough ass to keep on repeating and believing that any government (SLP) can change a lopsided economy like ours within 12 months, whatever your political affiliation."

Pot calling the kettle black. The ass who wrote the above cannot connect any dots and is clueless.

It is not about just turning the economy around in 12 months. It is SAYING you can turn the economy around in 12 months in 2010 and pleading helplessness in 2013.

It is lying and saying that the only thing wrong with the economy in 2010 was King & his nonosensical Company then in 2012 saying it is the world economy and external circumstances.

It is acting as if you have no economic sense or experience and saying that VAT is bad for the malaway in 2010 then miraculously good in 2012.

It is lambasting the Taiwanese in 2008, 09,10 and 11 then saying in 2012 that you are keeping them as you diplomatic allies AND acepting money from them as Prime Minister.

It is complaining about debt when the SLP were the main cause of the debt and poor governance.

Need I say more ? !!

Anonymous said...

And did not the Compton Cabal say similarly or even more. John Compton did not even live to make any changes. In fact, his contribution was to hang three albatrosses around the necks of St. Lucians: King, Bruce Tucker and the drug lord that Compton held his nose and then embraced him and the jail bird.

Better days? Your head must have traded places with your posterior, man.

Cut out the campaigning crap for just a moment.

The issues facing this nation at this time are not just Kenny's massive financial blunders or just the unethical and immoral behaviour of the last cabinet.

If you could be just a little bit more honest and tad more realistic, you would come to appreciate that the main issue facing this nation is the cummulative effect of not having leaders so-called, with an innate sense of ethical guiding principles when making national political and economic decisions.

The short-term political decisions that they have been making and repeating are what that have to a head, and this is what is biting our behinds at this very moment.

At each and every turn, the leaders from John Compton on, have been playing to the galleries of their respective party supporters with the main aim of getting into power or re-elected.

The last excursion by John compton was tragic for this country.

but the last few have been particularly onerous for this country in many, many different way. For example we've had:

1. Very poor decision-making regarding our huge financial deals; the so-called investments placed our national assets in jeopardy, with Saint Lucia egregiouly having to buy back or pay for assets it alreadyu had, and without any other asset being created or secured.

2. Deficient moral judgement by bringing in well-known criminal characters like ex-convicts, and drug lords into government and the cabinet

Absent from most of these were concerns about whether:

(a) the interest of all stakeholders, meaning, those touched and eventually affected by those decision were satisfied or sacrificed

(b) all rights and duties were respected, for example, to bargain in good faith or to do due diligence.

(c) the principles of (social) justice did prevail, as in the cabinet decision to give illegal concessions to a fellow cabinet member

(d) the decisions, were they consistent with the responsibility to care. Here we are talking the language of the economics (not familiar territory for our many politicians) of "Pareto Optimality" -- i.e., decisions whereby we make only some people better off, but without making others worse off.

Looking back at the cummulative effect of the various types of decisions that we have had on display in Saint Lucia for the past 40 years, it is very clear to the non-biased that we must now put a halt to the political madness of party politics, if we are going to take greater individual responsibilty to dig ourselves out from the cesspool and hell hole that the poltical shysters we call politicians, have been digging for us today, and the future generations to come.

I am a die hard Labour Party Supporter, but don't like the idea that the Prime Minister can't paid the Civil Servants yet. The teachers have always supported you all, and now you all playing all foolish games with them. Is it because it is your last term in office and you are trying to make things look bad for the rest of the candidates come next election? I hope not because this is very selfish. I do not like the things that I am hearing. You all are not keeping up to your promises. Lots of business in VFort are closing down because of that high VAT you just come and throw on us. You are making the flambeaus laugh at us. Instead of Better Days we are hearing Bitter Days.

Boy your students or pupils, more than likely following in your footsteps, are already being schooled in self-defeating political prostitution and are ripe for exploitation. You are part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

The civil servants that got the increase from Stephenson King, more than deserved it, because Kenny Anthony never gave them a raise in ten years and five or more years before that, they never got a raise.

Yet as soon as he came into power in 1996 he gave himself and his men a huge increase before they even sat down, to start to work. That was unprecedented. etc. etc. No time now to say the rest. I Will discuss it on the television call in programs. Because all the figures and information are there in the old Budgets.

Well, if the politicians got an undeserved increase which the UWP did not refuse to accept, why did the UWP political bandits have to go further and get their hands stuck in the cookie jar?

The OECS Court of Appeal said that it was an illegal act.

Why did the head and the rest of the Ali Baba gang which they called a cabinet, not resign?

Honourable SOBs?
