a visiting inmate can mix with a mad man, and sleep in the same suite with the Iron god or with a sweet-little boy with a mix-sex brain with a hard-on that never goes down!

Who wrote this garbage? Where was it ever suggested that the Custody Suites be furnished as a hotel suite etc,etc...? I certainly never got that impression anywhere by reading media reports.

Secondly, I do not believe that the Police came in for criticism for the inhumane situation at the holding cell.

As a matter of fact the Police Welfare Association was quite vocal that thier own concerns about the facility were being ignored by the Minister responsible and by extension the government.

Sure enough some of the issues mentioned about vandalism and sabotage by inmates is a reality but that does not address the situation of the entire facility being unfit for human habitation even for 24 hours.

This article completely missed the essential point of bringing the state of the facility to the public's attention. It's really a human rights issue and a public health issue.

One of the fundamental tenents of the law is innocence until proven guilty. Thus until such time that you are deemed to have been found guilty of the crime for which you have been arrested you have the right not to be exposed to diseases, the right to be safe in the custody of the state, the right to legal representation, the right to bail etc.

What we are asking the authorities is not to provide a leisure suite but upgrade the pig pen to meet minimum standards of a custodial facility, throw a mat on the floor or something like that.

As a civilized society there are a few things we can do to promote civility in all spheres of national life.

The shoe is definitely on the other foot. A Policeman once told me " Once I charge you the burden is now yours to prove your innocence, not me to prove my charge". The charge has been laid and is believed until the Police/Authorities can prove otherwise. Don't blame the press for highlighting the problem. Too many political operatives willing to sacrifice the entire country for their own selfish interest.
