I submit that the most influential things in the the lives of the human being are Politics and Religion (P & R). During the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Delegates to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the issue of how to count slaves split the delegates into two groups. The Northerners/Union, who we are told fought to free the slaves, regarded slaves as property who should receive no representation. Southerners/Confederates, who we are told were against freedom for slaves, demanded that Blacks be counted as equal with whites. The compromise clearly reflected the strength of the pro-slavery forces at the convention. The “Three-fifths Compromise” allowed a state to count three fifths of each Black person in determining political representation in the House.
Rather than halting or slowing the importation of slaves in the south, slavery had been given a new life — a political life. Even when the law stopped the importing of new slaves in 1808, the south continued to increase its overall political status and electoral votes by adding and breeding slaves illegally. The Three-fifths Compromise would not be challenged again until the Dred Scott case in 1856, where the issue of a Black person had no rights that a Caucasian was bound to respect.
On March 6, 1857, Chief Justice Roger Taney issued what is widely regarded as the worst Supreme Court opinion ever. He noted that the question before the Court was whether African Americans are citizens of the United States and thus able to file suit in federal court. His analysis of that issue is couched in abjectly racist language:
[African Americans] had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations; and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit. He was bought and sold, and treated as an ordinary article of merchandise and traffic, whenever a profit could be made by it.

After reading ""The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander, I expect this story would not surprise you, but since the Clintons were mentioned yesterday I thought it worthy of mention to underscore my disdain for this criminal family.

As Mr. Saltibus quite rightly observed, and as evidenced in the mindless regurgitation of the purely liberation literature of the 1960s and earlier, Blacks are culturally bonded and moored to their past. Tribal institutions (in the broadest sense of the word institutions) and their related culturally shared values are the way of life.
Warped thinking tied to their bounded rationality, these commentators up there honestly think that they are making a whole lot of sense and progress, by metaphorically driving forward with their eyes fully transfixed on the rearview mirror.
This aptly describes all the nations and cultures that are stuck in honouring conditions of a past that does not exist in the present; that does not inform on how to deal with the challenges of the present; and that which keeps them hidebound, slaving on ideas like this the emancipation treadmill.

The study of the African presence in history, whether in the African Diaspora or Africa itself, is a richly rewarding endeavour. In this study we realize that slavery alone is not African history and that African history is everybody’s history. The history of African people — Black people — is rich and comprehensive, inspiring and, often, little known. Nowhere is this more the case than the African presence in Medieval and Renaissance Europe.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the African Moors, as early as the Middle Ages and as late as the 17th century, were “commonly supposed to be black or very swarthy, and hence the word is often used for Negro.”
Early in the eighth century, after a grim and extended resistance to the Arab invasions of North Africa, the Moors joined the triumphant surge of Islam. Following this, they crossed over from Morocco over to the Iberian Peninsula where their swift victories and remarkable feats soon became the substance of legends.
In July 710, Tariq, with 400 foot soldiers and 100 horses, all Berbers, successfully carried out a mission in southern Iberia. Tariq, an important port city in southern Spain, is named after him.
It is clear, however, that the conquest of Spain was undertaken upon the initiative of Tariq ibn Ziyad. Tariq was in command of an army of at least 10,000 men.
In 711, the bold Tariq crossed the straits and disembarked near a rock promontory, which from that day since has borne his name — Djabal(mountain) Tariq (“Tariq’s Mountain”), or Gibraltar. In August 711, Tariq won paramount victory over the opposing European army. On the eve of the battle, Tariq is alleged to have roused his troops with the following words:
“My brethren, the enemy is before you, the sea is behind; whither would ye fly? Follow your general; I am resolved either to lose my life or to trample on the prostrate king of the Romans.”
Wasting no time to relish his victory, Tariq pushed on with his dashing and seemingly tireless Moorish cavalry to the Spanish city of Toledo. Within a month’s time, General Tariq ibn Ziyad had effectively terminated European dominance of the Iberian Peninsula.
In the aftermath of these brilliant struggles, thousands of Moors flooded into the Iberian Peninsula. Tariq himself, at the conclusion of his illustrious military career, retired to the distant East, we are informed, to spread the teachings of Islam.
